Hi All,

My current setup is a Nikon D40 with an external flash I am having trouble with the darker areas of the image having quite a fair bit of noise, and the out of focus areas too.

I am not sure what could be causing this problem my ISO is set at 200.

Any ideas to fix this would be appreciated.

Post up a sample image mate, it makes it so much easier for people to explain the problem to you............:thumbs:
 
Whoa...........needs to 800 pixels on the longest side or the teachertype people will be on your case.........:lol:

Are you using a dedicated Macro lens?? What Aperture (f) number you using or are you going for the narrow depth of feild look??
 
I do not have a macro lens I am just using the standard 18-55mm lens you get with the D40. And I think im on around 9 - 11 aperture That was last night So not too sure.

Bearing in mind that I am no expert,this is what I reckon,no offence intended.

The D40 is not the best camera in the world,nor is the 18-55 the best lens,perfectly adequate in most situations,but you can find fault in anything if you look hard enough.Try stopping the lens down to say F8,see if that improves things........:thumbs:

It is taking ages for my chronically slow PC to open this thread,could you resize or delete the mahoosive image please?..........:lol:
 
Just a thought. Have you made any adjustment to exposure to this image? Underexposure will tend to give an increase in noise. Try increasing the exposure, even 1/2 stop can make a difference
 
looking at the histogram the shot is under exposed as chappers says try again and try exposing with the histogram to the right.

I would go with reducing the aperture and use a tripod if your not already, If your after the shallow depth of field maybe you will have to compromise between the DOF and image quality!
 
These are at ISO 1600,hence the noisy appearance.

Yes.

I don`t have a D40,but i`m assuming it must be.try knocking the auto ISO off,your shutter speed will drop and you may have to use a tripod,then try them again.....:thumbs:
 
Noisewise,Yes.........:thumbs:

I never used to use auto ISO, but now I use it more or less all the time.I find it very useful.But don`t forget that you have it enabled or it will cock certain shots up.For example, putting your camera on a tripod at F11 for a landscape does not require a fast shutter speed,so lose the auto ISO and use the lowest setting available. That is a very basic example, but keep practising and using the camera,you`ll soon find your way around it......:thumbs:
 
I don`t check peoples websites, though,contrary to admin opinion,I will always try to help people new to photography along.It was not that long ago that I was in the same boat.Certain people on here helped me along tremendously,I do try to do the same.


Though sometimes I don`t orate as I should...............:D
