Well just looking at 2 alternative noise removal plug-ins for Photoshop and there does seem to be quite a difference. The package that seems to get most mentions is noise ninja but I was advised to take a look at Imagenomic's Noiseware professional too.

Here is a comparison, if you have a different package feel free to run the unprocessed image through it so we can see the difference. Both these processed images are using default settings.

Unprocessed at 100%

For me Noiseware is best! The noise reduction in Lightroom 3 is pretty good too!!

I have not used either of these but the quality of the noise reduction in lightroom 3 really surprised me too!

I've tried most and ended up with topaz denoise, it produces results I find most pleasing.

I always used to swear by NoiseWare.

I find the noise reduction built into Lightroom 3 so effective that I hardly ever use it any more though!

I'm surprised how aggressive both these noise reduction systems are in their loss of detail. Look at the impact they have on the girls freckles. If I knew the person in the picture I'm not sure whether I'd be pleased with an image that's smoothed her skin that much. When it's spots and blemishes that are being removed I understand but freckles are more defining in recognising a person I'd have thought. I'm just really thinking out loud here so feel free to tell me I'm wrong!

I agree, the girl in the picture is my daughter but this was just as a demonstration of noise reduction software and I was hoping people would take my original image and run it through their software and re-post so would can discuss the various packages. I am not a big fan of noise reduction software but rarely use it as I like to shoot at 100-400 on the D200 and under 3200 on the D700.
