So I have just bought the Nikon 70-300mm VR from Camerabox... I was abit worried about the whole thing after reading mixed reviews but I was assured by them that they source from Europe and the lens will be covered by a full 1 year UK warranty. The lens arrived as promised this morning, but there's no warranty card in the box?! Phoned Nikon UK who said they cannot tell where lens has come from by serial number and Camerabox are obliged by law to provide a warranty on purchase. So I am now worried I have been sold an US/grey market import. Has anyone else had this problem and what should I do? Have emailed them about the warranty card but I am doubtful I will get a reply!

p.s. my serial number begins USXXXXXXX so does that imply its a US import, or is it totally unrelated?

There is a strong clue there :D ... definitely a US one.

Its a US lens.

Nikon UK will still give you one year warranty, you just need to keep the Proof of Purchase. The warranty card (although nice to have) isn't important, and neither is registration.

I think that they will ask for a VAT invoice as proof of purchase.

That's just sigma ,they offer warranties in different territories and can tell where it's come from by the serial number, Nikon warranty is valid worldwide

CameraBox prices seem to include VAT I think, so I imagine the Invoice will have a VAT component.

Yeah the invoice has a VAT Reg no, Tax date and VAT breakdown. Will Nikon UK really provide warranty on a US model? I'm surprised by that!

They will - lenses have an International Warranty, and you've paid VAT so there will be no problem.

If you'd bought a camera body, you'd be out of luck though.

I've had Nikon UK do a US lens for me, no problem. Nikon USA will give you the extra 4 years, but you'll need to send to to Nikon USA in Melville for the 1 year excess.

Well that makes me feel much better! I was really worried I'd been lumped with a lens without any warranty! Now I can go and enjoy playing with the new toy :)

Enjoy!

I bought a lens without a warranty card a while back, and basically Nikon UK told me that it really did'nt matter, and the key thing is the proof of purchase for warranty service.

(Nikon UK did actually send me a warranty card for my lens after I asked)

They don't on bodies but a lens bought anywhere will be honoured in any country.

I'll be living in Vancouver, Canada, for 9 months from September. If I had problems with the lens out there does anyone know if it would it have to be sent back to the UK to be covered by warranty? Or would I be able to get it sorted in the US/Canada for free? I realise I'm probably being abit cynical now and should stop worrying, lol!

I would just use it, enjoy it ;)

Stop worrying :D

I have stopped worrying (!) and have to say I am very pleased with the lens - the VR is fantastic!! Would highly recommend the lens to anyone.
