NO TRIPODS - LONDON

i want to know what that says but the text is too small, and when i zoom in goes blurry :(

Police twist the laws to prevent protest, stopping people and threatening arrest under vague, encompassing terrorism laws. If you see a copper behaving oppressively, we need to know. Let experienced journalists decide what action to take.

they might tell you to re -position your wife

Maybe we need to get some of those yellow signs made up like those used by cleaners for slippery surfaces etc...

OK, email sent:

Hello,

Recently on a visit to Canary Wharf, I was approached by security in the middle of taking a photo of the HSBC tower. Unfortunately this photo was ruined, as the security guard stopped in front of my setup before I had completed my exposure. He indicated that in order to take photos, I would need to apply for a tripod permit. I tried to explain that a tripod was merely a device for holding photographic equipment steady, this drew blanks. I asked if I could place my tripod on the ground, and hand hold my Camera to take the photos, and he agreed this would not be a problem. I then asked if I could get my wife to kneel on the ground, bent over in a "table like" position, and he agreed that this would not be a problem. My wife reluctantly agreed to replace my tripod, and become my "human camera stabiliser". Before security and I parted company, he informed that I could apply for a "Tripod Permit", hence my email. Can you organise for a Tripod Permit to be issued? I would like to drive back down from Edinburgh to get that photo of the HSBC tower, without security this time. The angle of the photo I require is such, that my wife bent over is of no use. If you could let me know where I can collect my tripod permit, I would appreciate it.

Regards,

Gary.

They'll think you were taking the p*ss.

You're not, are you?:cuckoo:

I got told to stop taking photos there a couple of years ago. Apparently I needed a permit to use professional equipment. I waiting til he'd gone then carried on.

I've had a small amount of experience of this. Was in Central Milton Keynes at the weekend taking shots of the artworks and Statues they have around the centre for a college project.

I was approached by a very polite Customer service lady who told me I need a permit to photograph in there as it's private property.

Well; I've been in touch with the centre management who not only have granted me permission, they're also letting me in a couple of hours before the centre opens on Sunday to take the shots in peace and have the centre to myself.

Surprising what can happen if you ask...

S

Assholes, I mean wtf do they think we are gonna do with the photos?

Gary.

Stick a pound of semtex on it and blow it to pieces and post the burnt bits back and ask them to deposit 10 million trillion pounds into a Yorkshire bank account and hope no body will ever guess youre not a real international terrorist ....just a wannabe terrorist posing as a photographer

why am I saying this ....Im here to save the world ... me n Penfold

I'm gonna cry if I ever need a permit for a.....bent over wife..
Stuff terror laws, I'm tabling a motion that bent over wives be excluded from permit requirements, whether acting as a tripod or not....

Gary sounds like you have invented something new that could make you a fortune!

The wifepod!

If somebody was to trip over your tripod, surely they would trip over you first, as most of the time, you are stood infront of the tripod, or behind the camera as it were? Or is this a stupd question, i know what i mean:lol:

OH NO!!!... I must be in serious trouble then!

Brilliant :lol::lol::lol:

The country is definitely on a downward spiral for this sort of thing(well most things), i mean when you can go to other countries and take photos with no problem, it makes you wonder what tourists will do when they come over in a few years time and have there cameras confiscated at customs as photography is illegal in the UK, still never mind they can always resort to preaching hate sermons against the west at Hyde park and Trafalgar square nothing wrong with that is their :cuckoo:

You will find since the whole war of terror started in 2001 that any place of comercial, political, historical, and infrastructure in the UK is watched like a hawk by security cameras. Whilst I understand that to us photographers not being able to use a tripod is a pest and makes night photography of some of the uk's landmarks dificult. I also believe that photography is definately a tool of the terrorist to stake out potential targets.

I work on the Forth Rail Bridge as an engineer and you would not even believe the security measures we have in place. This included a briefing by the police to all our men to make them aware of watching out for suspicious behaviour. We have seriously had to evacuate the bridge one day after the police put us on high alert of a potential bomb threat.

Also working in the construction industry I have a more practical understanding of H and S than most. And unfortunately it has gone crazy. I need to give a man a briefing now just to use a step ladder... and in some companies their use is banned... but if you don't tick all the boxes under current laws it could be you that's facing the man with a wig under a civil case if someone trips over your tripod! It is crazy but thats how it is!

Unfortunately the world is an evil place... but photography is our hobby... we just need to accept that some rules which possibly could be argued as over the top are put in place to protect the nation. I have already when asked put my tripod away in Edinburghs Waverley station... and there is allot of nice night shots in there. But at least I can go home and sleep in my bed at night knowing there are people out there watching and working... so that the next morning I can get up and safely travel into work in the knowledge I should be safe!

We do not need a repeat of 9/11 or the London bombs!

I agree with your sentiments, I really do, but you have to understand - no amount of CCTV cameras / police officers / barriers / gates / bans on tripods is going to stop the most determined of terrorists to carry out attrocities. It just makes them work harder and ensure they really do merge with the shadows. There is very little you can do to stop an individual with a bomb strapped to his chest, willing to die for his twisted views. If he wants to take out a train or a bus, he will be able to, nothing we can do - some will get through the "safety net".

Gary.

One possible answer to these nazis is to tell them you're disabled and cannot hold a camera steady so must use a tripod. Then dare them to discriminate against a disabled person.

Garry... I know exactly what you mean... Im not taking anything away from what you said.... In fact I'll second it! I actually on thinking about it again just cant believe that there are people out there in the world so evil to even want to do anything like that... I've never even punched or felt the need to punch anyone in life nevermind cause harm to inocent people... where has the world gone wrong... how have people got so twisted... it's wierd... I always wander where does their simple sense of right and wrong come in... I believe we are all born with basic concience!

Yup, we will never understand it fully, although many will argue we created a lot of our own problems by sticking our nose in where is wasn't wanted. Too heavy for me to go into at this early hour

Your up early, busy day at work ahead?

Gary.

No quiet night at work just finishing... Working nightshift on the bridge this week... not the most exciting shift... basically supervising the guys doing nightshift...

Just found this forum on Monday and really enjoying it!

Good stuff :) I can be found lurking around your bridge in the early mornings at times, Tripod erect! :D

One of my favourite places to photograph.

Maybe we will catch up at some point...

EDIT : Oh and some tape that says "TRIPOD LINE, DO NOT CROSS"

Aye, and a high visibility tabard - as worn by bus drivers, delivery drivers, visitors & contractors at government offices, everybody bar the occasional remaining tourist;)

Now there's a thing. Not long ago the caricature of the visiting tourist from oh, let's say the USA, was of someone with more cameras around their neck than... Assuming we still get international tourists in London (we certainly do in Cambridge) how do they get on with the Jobsworths?

Isn't it time for a little "Hallo, your country is beautiful, I am enjoying my holiday" action here?

If tripod use is singled out, I wonder if there's been a specific incident of tripod terrorism or it's just a simple way of singling out a type of tog who is more likely to communicate his frustration and help stir up the climate of fear?

If the Dept for Acceptable Use of Photographic Equipment is really doing its job, are sales of tilt/shift lenses being monitored? Did the Tog With The Huge Erection get tapped on the shoulder and told to put it away?

I also believe that photography is definately a tool of the terrorist to stake out potential targets.

FACT: Terrorists have used cameras to stake out potential targets

FACT: Not once have terrorists used anything bigger than a compact camera and certainly never a tripod.

On Sunday evening, Blapto, Woodsy and myself were stopped on the south bank (Between London Bridge and Tower Bridge) and were told by a security guard we were not allowed to photograph the buildings because of security issues. When I asked whether she was approaching all tourists with cameras, she replied "No, just professional cameras and tripods". This in itself makes a mockery of the "Security" excuse. Terrorists can only commit atrocities if they have professional photographs of their intended target?

Its insane. I was out taking photos before going to the cinema a few months back. Lost track of time, so had no time to dump camera at home, and I was NOT leaving it in the car in Leith.

Anyway, I had a 2o minute argument with the manager about my "piracy threat" versus all the compact video cams on all the high capacity video phones!!! I had to comprimise and surrender my Battery, I was not happy. I tried to explan that if I wanted to pirate a film, I would either download a good copy, or take in a VIDEO capable camera small enough to hide :D I had the D3 with 14 to 24 BOWL on the front!!!! Did she honestly think I would try and record with it?

I don't understand why big and black = professional ! ;)

Gary.

Gary.

I remember your post on this. It's mostly ignorance TBH. The only time they generally see these cameras is on the TV, either at sporting events or with the paparazzi, therefore to tem they are professional cameras.

Educashun, Educashun, Educashun!!! ;)

LOl cant wait see reply ( if any ) to that one :)

Hi

Crazy isn't it. Anyway here you go Gary, flash em this lol

I wonder where discrimination comes into this?

Take your example Fabs, the one on the bridge. What would happen if you asked for her superior and claimed discrimination. After all, you were tourists, same as those with P&S' close by. You were being discriminated agains for having a DSLR. She admitted that much

Very true, but at that time on a Sunday I doubt her superior would have been around or maybe a shaved gorilla!!
