No to wind farms...

...i'm sure far less birds are killed by windfarms than by being ingested into plane engines or caught by plane/helicopter/microlight blades or shot at etc etc.

It's a shame indeed, but if you weigh up the alternatives to wind power it seems like one of the friendlier (or potentially friendlier) energy source towards the avian community.

Nuclear power stations cull birds to prevent spread of radioactive pollution, oil spills have devastated entire species and solid fuel used to be quite hard on canaries(ok thats the best i could think of and incredibly tenuous).

this article is quite interesting http://www.rspb.org.uk/ourwork/policy/windfarms/index.asp
reading into it i think if more thought was put into the placing of windfarms then the risks can be minimised?

lol @ the idea of windfarms killing birds

they call that 'evolution'

windfarms have many many failings but that is not one of them

Ban cars and domestic cats, they kill many thousands of birds each year.

Well that was shocking, but I agree, I don't believe Wind farms cause the death of many birds, there are far many other dangers.

Bird's behaviour changes to avoid/dodge the windfarms and blades after about 3 years - long term studies have virtually unanimously agreed on this

Look at some of the long term studies and read the journals yourself, not a sensationalised rewrites by journalists or laymen

Birds are pretty good at adapting - so I believe the thread is minimal.

But there are better forms of sustainable energy than wind power - that's a whole new debate though!

I love birds and support the RSPB but I dont think we should be so dependent on oil and gas as we often have to buy these from countries who could charge us what they like. Although wind farms may not supply a lot of energy they are a start. As others have said I think birds will adapt to them.

:suspect: according to some enviro-mentalists earlier this week, we should get rid of our pet dogs anyway, so no problem adding cats to the list of things we should not do in the name of the environment and cars are already there. In fact I am pretty sure that with some thought, w could come up with a reason why birds are bad for the environment too ;)

Seriously though, as already pointed out, several studies have shown that windfarms have a small effect on local bird populations initially but that the birds quickly adapt so I think its a pretty poor excuse for not having windfarms. Yes, that video is not nice, and such accidents will happen, but in the bigger picture its a rare occurance.

Well ,people on here are on about banning kids ,after a programme i watched on tv the other night ,youth culture of today needs serious investigating, and even more so their parents lack of control of their upbringing .But ,i suppose this is another matter that i reckon would make for an interesting read .And i'm not trying to be controversial for the sake of it .:)

Hey Frac - that sounds like a good candidate for a new thread mate :)

now, i understand where you are coming from

but.. birds have eyes, yes? they have brilliant depth perception as well for catching their prey etc

That looked more like natural selection to me

Looked like he was playing chicken to me.

They put one foot near my dog and I'll show them the sharp end of a wind farm!!

I'm with viper. Natural selection. Any bird stupid enough to fly in to massive blades probably deserves to die :D

They were probably on their way to join their friends, taunting our kite-flying kids from their perches on electricity cables, before launching a poop attack on statues and wedding guests and going on to star as extras in a Hitchcock remake.
