Has anyone any idea bright whats happening with my TV, sky, dvd setup?
All is fine....but when I turn the dvd player OFF there is no sound (well very very very low sound so as hardly not to be heard).
If I turn the dvd player back on...the sound comes on fine again.
ive changed scart leads and played a dvd disc and sound is fine.

It wouldnt be a problem but it seems a huge waste of electricity to leave the dvd player ON all the time.

sky hd box connected to lcd tv by hdmi lead

sky box to dvd player by scart lead

dvd player to tv by scart lead (and also red and white audio leads just in case)

all the source buttons bring up the correct inputs

just this sound thing. I cant see it being a wrong connection or the sound wouldnt be there all the rest of the time would it?

You do have the sound turned up on the TV remote Janice? ;)

no surround sound........... volume up on remote (needs to be full up before you can hear the tiniest sound...as soon as you turn the dvd player back on the sound is booming)

the sky box is connected to the dvd player so the signal goes through the dvd player to record onto it.

Sounds like the sound is being carried using the passthrough on the dvd player. I'd check all the HDMI leads and audio cables and things - dont you need seperate cables from the HDMI cables for the sound - the red and white phono leads might be carrying the sound.

Disconnect the red/white audio leads from the tv/dvd player and try it.

I only put those in this morning because it wasnt working and it made no difference! I will disconnect them though.

Silly question, but does the dvd player have surround sound speakers attached to it, or is the audio coming from the tv speakers?

its only when the sound is going THROUGH the dvd box without it being on that the trouble is. if it is carrying the sound when its on then sure all the cables must be working?
The reason it is connected by a scart cable to the sky hd box is because all the diagrams in the tv book, sky book, and dvd player book show a connection between the sky box and dvd player. Is this wrong then?

PS no surround sound within the tv...just normal sound. No surround sound system connected as yet. I thoght it may be because i had DOLBYD set as the sound setup in the SKY SETUP so i set it back to normal, but no change.

is the dvd player a recorder as well then ?

Its possible the DVD may have a problem passing the signal through, try connecting audio leads from sky box to tv, if it has the connections, as there is no audio going direct from the sky box, this is why the DVD has to be on all the time !

Well yes of course, but why would you think that the dvd would pass audio when it was switched off?

What I was trying to find out was wether you were using the tv's own speakers or a seperate set powered by the dvd player (which if it's switched off will not work). If you are using the tv's own speakers the dvd should have no effect on them.

right latest update...i have put the audio cables between sky box and tv.
when i turn off the dvd recorder...the sound continues for exactly 5 seconds then stops..........every time!

actually are you using the HDMI input on the TV when watching SKY ? as the HDMI cable should pass audio, if it isnt then either the cable is faulty, or TV setup may be wrong.

yes.... when watching ordinary SKY, hdmi comes up in the corner of the screen as the input/source....and the sky picture is on.... the sky box and tv are connected by hdmi.

as for "why do you think the dvd player will be able to pass an audio signal when it is turned off?"..... because the dvd book says it will. it says it can be turned off and the signal will still run through it.

hmmm cant think of any other reason for it to not work then Janice sorry, the DVD being switched off shouldnt affect audio as its on the Scart connection not HDMI ! only thing i can think, and this really is clutching at straws, is that the audio settings on the TV are somehow set to receive via Scart and not the HDMI, or for some reason the SKY box, cable or TV are not processing the Audio through HDMI ! :( have you tried it with the DVD disconnected from the TV ?

Maybe im creating a fuss about nothing (it wouldnt be the first time!!)

Yes, we are able to watch great sky hd straight from sky box to tv.
yes, we are able to play dvd's, and record dvds.

The only reason I am bothered that when we put the tv inputsource to dvd...and turn the dvd off... the sound goes, is because it is obviously not meant to do it and I DO LIKE EVERYTHING TO WORK AS IT IS SUPPOSED TO!!

Dont worry any more guys, thanks for your help and suggestions, I will try to forget about it! That's what being a Virgo does for you, never satisfied until things are working as they should!

Thanks again, get on with enjoying your Sunday. :)

HDMi carries audio too i think, but requires a decoder, can you select the audio output path on sky box?

Just a thought (and forgive me if I'm stating the obvious).

Are you turning the DVD player OFF completely (eg, via the physical power switch or at the plug), or are you putting it in standby.

The reason I ask is that I'm sure deviced still need power to act as passthroughs.

just off with the button on the remote...the time is still displayed.
its the fact that the sound stays on for 5 seconds each time then goes off that I find odd.

in a nutshell.............if i am watching a program thru the dvd player (with the tv source button set to dvd so I can view it) and (any input source in the dvd player...for instance ordinary tv...or even a dvd disc) when i press the power off on the dvd player (standby), the picture on screen switches automatically over to what the sky box is showing at the time and the sound then goes off after 5 seconds.

I have to then press the tv source button to view it through hmdi.

Well if we look at this logically. Then we know that the sound is not passing through the DVD player when it's off.

Now your manual states that it does (or at least should). Could it be a generic manual, covering a few different models?

I've got mine set up slightly differently IIRC.

IIRC (I'm not an AV person really).

Can you not have it set up so that the Sky box is the passthrough for the DVD player? I think this is the way we have it set up.

TV-Sky-DVD

So that the Sky box connects directly to the TV AND the DVD, and the DVD player is connected to the second scart on teh TV.

(I know not of all this HDMI stuff, so if I'm too out of the loop, just ignore me :p)

thats exactly what i had, along with the hdmi from sky to tv. then someone suggested taking out the scart from sky to dvd which i tried, no difference, then i tried removing the scart from sky to tv as the hdmi already joins these two, but no difference still.

Another way I could suggest, is

TV > Sky > DVD, but dont hook the DVD player to the Tv directly?

I think it's the first on the chain that takes precedence, so to watch your DVD player you have to put the sky box into standby?

Does that make sense? Or am I waffling?

Come on you Home AV experts :D

we've never had to do that before. had satellite since about 1989 (with a HUGE dish in the garden!!) never had to turn off the sky box to watch a dvd or vice versa...usually they just take over from each other, or if not then changing the source on the tv remote does it.

Theres possibly something wrong somewhere, i dont know where, but as long as the sky hd works through the hdmi lead, and i can record onto the hard drive of the dvd recorder too ....then Im happy. Thanks for your help, Marcel.

PS. My friend's middle name is Marcel!

That's cos its an ace name (or so I've been telling myself for 29 years...lol)

I just suggested that as an alternative. It's the way I had to do it when our TV only had one scart socket :D

Tis a puzzler thats for sure.
