Since when did Jessops stop doing price matches?

Went into the Reading one today to get a Sandisk 4gb CF card. Now I normally only use Lexar cards but I figured since I can get one off amazon for £99.99 I'd give one a go and get Jessops to pricematch as I knew they sold them.

Went in and told the guy I wanted one, and showed him the printout. "No we've been told not to do pricematch anymore" he says. Offers no explaination but asks what price Amazon were doing it at. Show him ( Jessops sell the same card at £199.99  ) and he says, na can't match that, I'll go get you one though.

Needless to say I wasn't having one at that price and told him I was hardly going to pay double. He just looked at me as if I was mad.

So what gives? Are Jessops trying to go bust? I've spent a small fortune with them in the past, and would have continued to as I hate buying anything online. But looks like online I'll have to go. I think I'll stick with Lexar cards too

Jessops will only match their own web sites, been that way for a long time now. Places like cameras2u which are jessops in disguise they will price match.

I've heard this before, I've also heard that it varies from store to store - guess different store managers have different attitudes

Dont blame you for not snapping his hand off

Some of the guys in Inverness didnt realise that even (allegedly)

Well they've always price matched when I've gone in, even before christmas they price matched for me.

Oh well I'll take my money elsewhere. I won't be surprised to see Jessops going bust if they keep prices double everyone elses and wont match prices.

see shops and supplies thread on CF cards....HTH

When I bought my 5D a couple months ago they have offered to price match any website I could give them the address for, which showed the item in stock and the website had a phone number they could ring up and check the actual stock existed. It must be down to the managers discretion.

See i was about to say dont buy from jessops full stop, but it's funny, sometimes they are the cheapest around, and then others, such as in you're case they are smply takeing the 'you know what' For example, was in my local home bramch, Newbury and the D200 was about £870 Body only, which from what I have seen is the cheapest so far. Dont know what to say really, sometimes they really impress, others they are having a laugh.

the local one to me wont price match at all even there website.

Yeah the Reading store don't price match at all anymore he said. Ah well, another case of customer service going down the swanny...

I don't think there is a company wide policy at Jessops or if there is not all shops stick to it.

I got my 30D from then last July and they did price match, after I started to walk out the door.

Also the store in Manchester is selling the 70-200 f4 L for £609 yet the one in Horwich is selling the same lens for £478.

Then again they both have the Tamron 55-200 for £200 while nearly everyone else sells it for £80.

All stores have been told not to price match.

They did have an offer on before christmas where they stated they would price match ANYTHING. This then changes to cameras and printers only IIRC.
Now I read somewhere (possibly MSE) that theyve had a head office memo to suspend all price matching.

Although I think the manager of the store does have leeway on prices anyway.

I never knew they were supposed to match their own websites (Cameras2u) etc, I would have got my grip from them last week if that was the case (cameras2u were the cheapest I found)

I've always found the Plymouth store does but you have to get the right guy, the guy who will price match recognises me which is handy.
They do need to sort it out though, they seem to be making really bad business decisions recently which seems to be driving away the enthusiast who potentially can spend thousands. Yet they prefer to have high prices and cater for the customer that doesn't know any better and probably won't get many repeat purchaces from after they get their P&S.

I just can't understand it

I can understand the high prices in the high street stores, they have to pay wages and city centre rates after all. But I still think it's a bit dishonest to sell at one price there and another much cheaper price online but not to acknowledge that it's the same company.

Whilst this may seem bad business to us, someone within Jessops has "worked" the figures and come up with the current business plan. No doubt at the moment they prefer to make obsene profits from fewer sales than same/less profit from more sales. JM2P's worth.

Don't think they're legally obliged to sell at the same price from one store to another let alone store to online. Now morally is another thing altogether.

I think as somebody has already said that this is now down to the discretion of the store manager. Mine has seen enough of me over the past few months to know that I'm a pretty good customer. I would prefer to buy in a store, as it's easier easier to return. But won't pay the prices Jessops are asking at the moment. Not saying it's better if you are a regular customer but I think it may help?

I did here of this new policy from Jessops the other day, I have used this price match facility with my local outlet in Redditch on a few occasions and they have received over 2k from me as a result of their flexibility.

I do think it relates to which outlet you use and also who within the shop you speak with, I would suggest that you try and build up a bit of a relationship with one of there staff members (at manager or asst manager level), this way they will hopefully remember you in the future and you do the "deals" with them.

It has worked for me in the past, I saved over £70.00 with them a couple of weeks ago when I purchased a new 580ex flash gun, go in armed with the information of where the better price is though, I took in details of 3 companies offering better prices.

I also however take on board that they have the expensive rent and rates to cover.....call me mercenary though, let other punters pay for that, for every one of us who ask for a price match, bet you there are 50 who dont....

They have revised their policy now. It's 110% of the difference of any UK stock (internet or shop) providing both they and the rival are both in stock. But it now only applies to cameras, camcorders and printers. NOT everything the store stocks.

If you can't get a price match as to speak to the manager. It's a company policy.

report in the papers this morning. Like for like sales for the 6 weeks up to 06 Jan 07 (I think that was the date) are down 6.8% compared with last year. Main reasons given were shortages of dSLR's and weak demand for compacts. Apparently margins were "at expected levels"
