Today I recieved a letter from work, which everyone else got and it stated that due to the economy as it is we will not be getting a payrise this year even though in our business we are even busier than usual and we are selling 1 third more than we ever have done and overtime is at an all time high BUT to make us happy we have been given an extra 2 days holiday on top of what we normally get....even though we cant afford to go anywhere anymore :shrug: roll on the hols
 
I don't know if I'm right but I think the extra days holiday are an EU thing, I'm sure we got something at work about new legislation meaning 2 more days holiday per year.

I think you maybe right I did hear something like this a few months ago
 
Some companies have been using public holidays as part of an employees annual holiday entitlement. This is just putting you in line with what the 'reasonable' companies have always done. There are no extra holiday days for me. I get my normal holidays, based on my shift work attendances, plus 8 public holiday days.

As for a thriving company not offering pay rises due to the "state of the economy" I suspect you're being had over. No doubt the company owners/directors are still benefiting from your profitability.
 
it is the eu regs giving peeps the bank hols off. full timers now get 5.6 weeks a year
 
Is there any websites I can read up on about this to help me build a case with my employer? Not had a pay rise for 4 years, and holiday is maxxed at 25 days plus 8 bank holidays.

Although saying that, is an employee entitled to a cost of living increase? I thought they might be. A company I used to work for, we didn't get a pay rise but we did get a cost of living increase and if you want to be pedantic, I suppose it is a pay rise

my mob have a similar increase in turn over this past winter and i still had to select 2 people for redundancy 2 weeks ago :(

No, unless there is a contract stating it, no pay rise is mandatory provided the wages are above minimum. Any increase in salary is a rise and with inflation so low anything at all would be an inflationary pay rise.

I haven't decided what to do this year, according to our agreement I should have cut everybody's pay. The directors have taken a cut but we kept the staff wages the same. Currently things have picked up but I think times call for prudence. Too many businesses seem to be run without looking forward.
 
I have had the same letter this year, on the up side i still have a job.
My dad hasn't had a payrise in 9 years, not even cost of living!
 
My company does not decide on my pay rise the government does.

minimum wage goes up so does my pay.

and i cant ever get a pay cut sometimes its nice at the bottom of the pile lol

minimum wage = minimum effort.
 
I get a crap amount of holiday. 20 days plus 8 bank holidays so 28 total!
I think i'm lucky, my sector seems to be staying steady at least, hopefully it will increase in sales too.

Be grateful you have a job at the moment. It's wise for any company to be prudent at the moment and even if generating profit I wouldn't personally give bonuses etc as the economy could take a sudden turn in any direction in these uncertain times and businesses need as much capital as possible.

Inflation isn't an issue and with low rates etc most people in a job have more money this year than they did last year.

There's a lot of people facing uncertainty currently. Once the economy has recovered then I'd say you are in a position to make a case.

Obviously my own opinion and nothing personal, we've been told no bonuses and no payrises for the forseeable future and to be prepared for a potential 5% paycut but I'm one of the lucky ones still in work so happy for the moment :)
 
Lots of companies, although having more business and working longer hours, are still struggling to raise finance. It's not always greed. Some companies are reducing or stopping wage increases in order to reduce the amount of borrowing they need to do.
Wages are the biggest cost to any business, which is why the first attempt at cost cutting is often redundancy.

It is a good thing to have a job of course as many peeps don't have one, as long as you are being paid enough to live.

The reason I put this thread up was that I feel the fat cats that run our business cannot give the guys that do it for them a pay increase yet the company has just taken delivery of a brand new fleet of 40 trucks and not the ordinary ones thes are the XXL cabs and all the bosses have had a nice increase in salary.....it just seems a little unfair to the working man/woman
 
As far as holidays are concerned, I've not heard anything about an extra 2 days. But I get 15 days annual holiday, 5 days at Christmas + the usual 3 days Bank Holidays. I also get the other 5 Bank Holidays, but on top of that I get 10 days service related holidays, the latter can be taken in groups or singularly and from this year we can take them at half a shift at a time seems strange going in for just over 3 hrs then off again. :lol:
I don't think we'll be getting a payrise this year we only just got last years rise from November in February this year. I'd love to be able to do some overtime, but ours has been cut, not had any in over a year, my gross pay has gone down over £10,000 without the overtime. But like others have said, I feel fortunate to have a job so soldier on.

I can understand the need for new trucks, the company has a business to run after all. But management getting increases and not workers is unethical.
None of our management got last year's rise or are liable to get a rise this year either

I work in distribution, and with a fleet of 40 trucks, you probably do something related to it too.

if the above is correct then you need reliable wheels to earn, so part of your above statement seems a little churlish.
:thumbsdown: on the directors pay rises though.

Yep defo glad I still have a job, make no mistake about that.

Agree with Dangermouse, nice pay rises for the men at the top over the past few years but nothing for us grunts. I've seen the emails from the accountant, I know who earns what and its a joke for the turnover they actually produce.

I feel for anyone without a job - we would be stuffed totally if I wasn't still employed.

That depends on a lot of factors, i have 5 trucks that need replacing because of the LEZ.
They are nearly new, but non compliant so they have to go.

We havent had a pay rise for 3 years now and got a letter last week asking me to voluntarily give up 8% of my pay - well I say voluntarily, if we dont go for it we won't have a company to work for.

My departments got more work than it ever has and keeping the rest of the business afloat so we're not all that impressed...

Umm.. no.

What with prices for everything going up and up, any wage freeze is effectively a pay cut. Many basic food items for example cost around 30% more than this time last year.
 
Where i first started working i was on £5 per hour, i've been there 4 years now, now i'm on £9 per hour, but a month ago we got a letter saying that the unions hadn't agreed a payrise, so we had the decision of having a lump sum of 2% our yearly wage at the beginning of May, so it was settled, but having looked at my payslip last week my hour pay had gone up 75p.

no pay rise here for 5 years and overtime pay cut to flat rate,also bonus targets raised and payments reduced ! made redundant recently so got a good pay out just before i was about to walk out.
 
I must admit I was VERY surprised when we got offered a 3.2% pay rise in January.

We also get 25 days plus bank holidays.

They made 2 full time and 4 part-time staff redundant this week.
 
I haven't actually had a pay rise for around 11 years, I took a pay cut two years ago but that was with a corresponding increase in my holiday allowance, but more recently took another paycut when I could see the way the world was going.

But then I'm one of these terrible fat cats that runs a business employing people.

I get a share of the profits, though these are often left in the business as Directors loans so don't see so much of that.

Our staff get pay rises, and profit share. Their share of the profit gets paid out, not retained.

If you don't like the way the firms you work for are run you can always go out and start your own. It might be useful to see it from the other side.
