No old f2.8 nikon glass?

Well pretty much....The first zoom was the Voigtlander Zoomar 36-82mm f2.8 which came out in 1958 but it was a good few years before zooms became the norm, even in the late 70's early 80's zooms were not as popular as primes. Basically the technology wasn't there to make good, cheap zooms, too much of a compromise.

There was a 35-70 f2.8 AF, an 80-200 f2.8 in both AF and MF, and a 200-400 f4. 180mm f2.8 prime was pretty popular I think. Dunno about any others.

PRetty sure most people just used a 24/28/35/50/85/135 prime :)

I'd love a full manual Nikon F kit, with those primes. That would be incredible, plus a pretty sweet little collection if you managed to get legit Hoods and everything...

Pricey though...

The technology wasn't really there in the AI era to make a 2.8 tele zoom properly, there is a Nikon 80-200mm f/4 AI-s but it's beaten by any modern tele zoom for image quality.
I think Nikon's first one was the Nikon 80-200mm f/2.8 AF in 1988, built like a tank for the most part and still commands about £500-600 on eBay.

Even Canon didn't have a 80-200mm 2.8 until 1989.

There are also some very high class alternatives to Nikon, like the Tamron Adaptall series, they released an 80 - 200mm f2.8 SP ('superior performance' ,their professional series) in 1985 which apparently performs very well and is quite sought after.

In case your unaware of the adaptall series, they are designed to have interchangeable lens mounts so get the appropriate Nikon F Mount AI-S adapter to fit on the adaptall mount and you have a fully functional f2.8 zoom which you can also use on other cameras, just get the appropriate adapter.

There was the Nikon 75-150 f3.5, fantastic sharp lens. Got one up the loft :)

The Series E one right? I should use mine more, I just struggle to find a lot of shooting uses for telephotos! Good lens nevertheless.

Yes the Series E...And (I just took a peek) there was also a Tokina 80-200 f4 which is rather nice as well.

Why in the loft? The Series E will meter and function fine on your D7000  film and digital equipment in perfect harmony!

Because lets face it, on the d7000 my 70-200VR is just so much more convenient :)

However I have a FM2n on its way, so it will make it out of there again...
