No more tax discs

....Can we expand those special lanes for German and Italian cars, or perhaps all roadworthy cars which can do 0-60 mph in under 6 seconds.

I have always thought that those cars which are designed and built for it should be subject to different and higher speed limits.

I agree. Road traffic is the only area of society where communism still exists.

Have more money, you can live in a better house, watch a bigger television, send your kids to a nicer school, get a better looking wife, use a better camera, stay in better hotels etc. But in the roads you are stuck at the same speeds in your £50k new mercedes as the guy in the £1k 14yo rusty micra. How is that fair?

Good idea. And I want a further lane for sub 4s cars :p

Gov dept. + computers = cock up again.
Now there is a surprise

Actually I did mine the other day,
it went off ok, and I have the email to prove it.

And I look forward to a reduction in costs next time too

It said it expects to save £10m a year by not having to print and distribute paper tax discs.

Just a thought, there used to be an offence of failing to display a disc.

I wonder if that will change over the coming year and change to
"displaying an out of date disc" for those that forget to take them off the screen?

Just wondered :D

Yes but sadly those lovely cars are driven by retards. :-)

Can the Golf crack 60 in under 4 (remap maybe ;)....really want one if thats the case
Oh yes :) and yes and mine is tickled by DTUK with one of the FSR boxes. The recalculated iPhone measurement suggests 3.77s to 60  and it feels like that.

I've got a vBox arriving on Friday for a more comparable timed run. And on Saturday I'm running at Santa Pod. Last week at Crail an equivalent S3 with the same setup ran the quarter mile in 11.9s....

I've got mine slightly detuned for everyday usage as the acceleration gives me a headache.

At the moment it's apparently not an offence, but that could all change :(

If displaying something irrelevant in or on your car becomes an offense, tthere's going to be a whole bunch of "powered by fairy dust" and "baby on board" folks are in trouble.

Years ago I had a bumper sticker that said "I used to be conceited but now I'm absolutely perfect" I imagine I'd be fairly stuffed? ;)

But the tax disc has been removed...

Actually you'd be fine for a good long time whilst folks figured out what conceited meant lol

No just 30,000 morons, who even though they got a reminders over 3 weeks ago waited till the very last day to renew, do these people not read you can renew upto a month before.
Mine took all of 3 mins when I did it 2 weeks ago.
Its possibly the fact that people don't want the government taking the money out of their account until the last possible moment ;)

Come on Ruth, you know they would just google it and claim they knew ;)

I did mine in the local post office yesterday, no hassle at all (y)
No way am I going to do it a month early

Mine's due at the end of October.
I figure all the faffing will be done by then

Since my memory is a little fnorked these days and I have a limited attention span, I have to deal with things that need doing as soon as possible or they get forgotten. I know my tax is due at the end of next month so will deal with the application when the form arrives. With interest rates at their current level, I'm not going to lose a fortune in interest by doing it early and I'll know that it's been dealt with. Won't be setting up a DD though.

Actually I'm going to say that's a bit harsh.

I mean even the multi billion dollar company Apple struggle with high load on occasion.

Nobody is going to spec a system to deal with stupid high load that happens 0.1% of the time. It'd be a huge waste of (tax payer) money.

when you think about it the monthly DD isn't such a bad thing you will only be paying one month in advance at any given time and when you come to sell your car you just stop the DD

sounds better to me than shelling out 6 / 12 months in advance

There is no reason why tax can't be pro rated when there is change of ownership or cars keep the current month's tax on so the new owner would only have to buy from the start of the next month. To me this way would be a lot better and a lot clearer but HMG want to take as much as they can so they cancel tax immediately.

To be fair this is a highly predictable business model. They care fairly accurately estimate when which renewals will happen. Not only that they have plenty of historic transactional data to aid them. And scaling up and down resources for demand period is relatively straightforward these days. Especially as it is not just about scaling up, but also scaling down to safe in energy and co2 emissions etc. combined resources with other government departments etc.

right but there has been an unprecedented amount of traffic to their site this time due to people looking up the changes.

for a fairly rare blip in traffic its not worth the cost even for multi billion dollar business. apple dont do it (look at how much of a fiasco iOS releases are), games companies dont do it (look at the blizzard/diablo 3 release issues).

its normally referred to as an unintentional denial of service - http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Denial-of-service_attack#Unintentional_denial-of-service

Which is a fair point, although not all of those would require transactional services. That would still be a level playing field. In my opinion it doesn't seem architecturally right to combine your transactional services with an informational element which could take down your services. And not only that, it is actually being hosted and provided under the gov.uk GDS banner which is a pan government hosting platform which reasonably should be able to cope with shifting resources to those areas where they are required to deal with peaks etc. there really is no excuse for these kind of services to have dedicated tin to under pin them.

Heck I remember when the sa service had to be extended for s day or two because the services couldn't cope many many moons ago. The solution to that wasn't just more dedicated tin as that would be a waste. However it was also not the old business link infrastructure which if I am not mistaken is underpinning .gov.uk nowadays as that couldn't deal with it either.

Anyway my point is, no need to waste money there are plenty of on demand architectures available that can be shared across services.

Just my 2p

fair enough, theres a lot of coulda shoulda woulda involved though. you'd think that one businesses actions on a particular ecommerce platform wouldn't take down all other businesses (including their own) but it happens :D

like i say there are businesses with much more resource (financially and physically) than our government that don't always get it right/do anything at all with abnormal load spikes. again i believe this is mostly due to the rarity vs cost.

but thats just my version of the 2p :)

I have just been to look at another car(used) today ,I noticed that the tax disc was still on the car and asked him the procedure now regarding the tax on the vehicle ,I was under the impression that I would have to tax if I purchased he said no ,I can buy the remainder of the duty of them, it was taxed until may and he worked it out at £190....added to the list price ,funny how the original forecourt price was £190 above what it is now ,doesn't bother me either way but was under the impression that tax was to be handed in and a refund issued....
