This can be done via Direct Debit on the Driver and Vehicle Licensing Agency (DVLA) website or at a Post Office branch.

Thats the bit that I'm not clear on, are they saying that we will have to set up a DD to pay DVLA
and they'll continue to take the money "regardless" until you tell them you have sold or SORN the vehicle?

will that still give you the option, I wonder, to switch between
12 months road fund and 6 months road fund.
Maybe being a DD you can pay monthly too.
(yes some of us do pay out outrageous fees for our tax disc ;) )
 
If you sell it or sorn it, cancel the DD....simples. :-)

It doesn't read that way, to me, seems you sign up and just continue
to pay by DD even when you change cars, they refund you and then up or down your premiums
Maybe I read it wrong, but it still seems "wrong" to me.
Again its another "opt out scheme"
Which I am never in favour of ;)
 
Any DD, whatever the recipient, can be cancelled by the payee.
Sell car.....cancel DD :-)

An one more thing, with all these people being put out of work, so no salaries to find,
all the paper saved printing the discs
as its now automated & electronic.
There will be a huge drop in the prices? right?
 
All I was saying is that if some cars don't pay tax why should bikes. Its not want want want, just fairness. As for other things like tolls bikers are doing their bit to reduce congestion. Its not rocket science and I don't understand why non bikers get their knickers in a twist. Its like filtering. Why's that a problem because we don't hold cars up. I can be gone at the lights on my bike quicker than I can put my car in gear and take the hand brake off. My advice is try biking, best drug in the world :)

Yeah but its an opt out, thats the point. how many people don't shop around for insurance etc,
as its renewed automatically.
And the cancellation fees can be quite astronomical if you read the small print.

Nope I'm anti, going on the facts I know so far.
I would rather buy it as I need it on line or over the counter.
And support my local small business which is that post office.

They do hold up cars. Every biker will pull up to the front of the queue in front of the cars, when I have been at the head of the queue and this happens, I have to wait for the bike to move before I can, either that or I knock the biker off their bike. I only use my handbrake when parked, rest of the time I'm good to go.

What's the CO2 output of your bike?
 
To be honest I don't know. But tbh it doesn't matter. Tax shouldn't be done on co2, that's paid in the fuel. It should be for the road usage/damage/repair.

I've never come across cancellation fees for renewals, I wouldn't have thought it would be allowed.
I'd rather not have to queue up at the post office, they take an age to do anything, I'd rather pay online than end up standing around waiting for up to 30 minutes as has happened in the past.

But the tax isn't a road tax, we've bot had that since 1938. It's a vehicle license fee. How can the CO2 tax be paid for on fuel? two vehicles producing different levels of CO2 run on the same fuel.
 
I think it should t make any difference how your tax is paid, you still don't need the disc. If you pay at the po then it will go on the computer updating dvla records.

Because the more fuel you use the more co2 you emit.
 
Reading what is said it's a licence to print money for the DVLA etc.

Why not make the Road Tax cover the individual and not the car ?
Not easy I know
As I see it at the moment if I borrow a car I have to trust the person who owns it that it is taxed
and if they lie about it I am liable :( and as has already been said, the minute you buy a car it is no longer taxed
as the tax expires with the sale.
You have to back pay to the beginning of that month but the seller only gets refunded from the end of the month
Motorist loses out DVLA wins everytime :banghead:

Bull. Not "every biker" pulls up to the front of the queue. Some do but not all of us. Very VERY few cars can out drag most bikes - even Harleys! Besides, almost all queues are in towns and are at traffic lights, hardly the place for racing. Been a long time since I had L plates but I'm fairly sure I was taught to use the handbrake at lights just in case I got rear ended - if you're riding the clutch and brake pedal, that would cause you to be catapulted across the lights while the handbrake should give at least some retardation.
 
I don't know about tax but as I understand it the US has got it right. The driver is insured, not the car. So whatever car they drive they're insured.

In my past experience it's one of the things buyers often ask," How much tax/MOT is left" , so was always a useful selling point

Nope....the registered keeper of the vehicle is liable, be it a private keeper or a car hire firm.

So how do you drive the car away? Will you be able to phone like with insurance? If its web based some places can't get phone reception let alone 3g

my 125cc tax is only £16 :) Leicester is superb for free designated motorbike parking, I use a flip or open face helmet and never take it off when filling up.

Not according to the link in the first post, the driver can be liable too

A driver, not registered owner, can be issued a non-endorsable fixed penalty for driving an untaxed car. An owner can be fined £80 for using an untaxed vehicle (one not registered off the road) and can be charged any back tax.

The majority of motorcyclists I have seen when I have been at traffic lights have made their way to the front of the queue. I never mentioned trying to race a bike away from the lights, but invariably they will have pushed their way to the front and it's very common for them to be sitting next to my front wing and I have to wait for them to move off first or else they will clip my car or I will clip them. I haven't used my handbrake at traffic lights in over 30 years, it's unnecessary, if I have to, I will prevent the car from moving with the foot brake, no riding the clutch necessary. I watch traffic light phases and the movements of the other traffic, I'm aware of when they are about to change in my favour and I'm ready to go when they do change.

I meant if you "miss" the renewal date and its auto renewed,
you cancel after it has been, and they try and sting for about half the premium.
Luckily i've never been caught like this, but reading the small print.
Its there.
Probably on page 100 ;)

If I need to go to the PO about the same time, I'll do it then,
I'll also do it on line, which ever is more convenient at the time.
The point I was making, it seems that you have to set up a DD
taking away freedom of chioce,
and also the possibility of paying 12 or 6 months at any given renewal
