HI All

I keep seeing recommendations to turn of IS when using lenses on tripods? why is this please ?

Steve

IS lenses look for vibrations to reduce – if there aren't any (when locked on a tripod) the lens looking for vibration can cause vibration (feedback) resulting in some camera shake.

Some lenses will have 'tripod detection' built in so you can leave it on.

Yes, even for those lenses that can auto detect mounted to a tripod, it is still worth switching IS off.

The Sigma 10-20mm does't have IS

Looks conclusive. Presumably also a problem with panning video.

Nope. The 100-400 has a special IS mode for panning where it ignores movement in the horizontal and only compensates for vibration in the vertical.
