Yes
Im going to see Race of Champions at Wembley on 14th of December.
I thought it will better for me to ask them if I can take my dSLR on grounds as I dont want to be stopped at the gates...
and thats what I got in reply :
'Please note that we only permit small, automatic, digital cameras inside the Stadium as part of our Ground Regulations.
However please also note that our Turnstile Staff retain the right to refuse entry to any items that contravene our Ground Regulations.
For the full list of our Ground Regulations, please go to the following link:
http://www.wembleystadium.com/events/groundregulations/
Please note that any camera which requires a change in lens would be classed as a professional camera.
With the technical development in cameras it is a very difficult subject to manage. '
I find that totally unfair :bang:
I've send second email asking if a small video camera will be allowed...( i havent mentioned that this is a full HD camera with a big zoom ;) )

Unfortunately it is private property so they are entitled to enforce these rules, no matter how misguided we feel they are and this is the case at most, if not all, stadiums. That said, I have seen plenty of people with DSLRs in stadiums but usually with a short lens so they can bring them in in coat pockets. If you turn up with a 1d and a 300m f2.8 lens, there's a very good chance you will get turned away. I went to Wembley myself last year for the Rugby League Challenge Cup Final and managed to get in with a Crumpler shoulder bag containing a DSLR and 70-300mm lens, but that was because security were too busy confiscating small plastic toys from a 5 year old! The fact that I had a walking stick probably helped as well.

I was told the same thing when I enquired about taking my dslr to Selhurst Park for a family day last yeah and was told the same thing.

They called removeable lens' proffesional cameras too and said I wouldn't be allowed. I was told to apply for a press pass to get with the other profesionals. Not *** I was after!

They elaborate though and explained they didn't want large camera's and lens' obstructing other peoples views in the stands.

Its annoying but hey.

I had the same thing three months ago when Wembley hosted the Socceraid game. Phoned up Wembley and got the same reply that you did, other than that the Lady did admit it was basically down to the stewards on the day and what the deemed to be a professional camera.

So I played by the rules and took a naf old compact. Went through the turnstile to find the security staff the other side and did they check my bag, no. Found my seat and what was five rows in front of me, some fella with a Canon EOS DSLR :(

Could have got away with it I suppose but whats the risk. I mean what would they do if they caught you with a dslr. Would they confiscate it and give it back to you later or would they just boot you out?

Chances are they would not admit you. They cannot confiscate it but they probably don't have the facility to "look after it" for you either. If you were to drive there, you could just go and put it in the boot of your car, but that's no comfort to the majority of people who probably use public transport.

its no biggie anyway.. to get any decent shots you would need a 1000mm f1.8
you cant get closer than row 16 and for the most part of the event the light isnt good enough to get any low ISO shots.

Even accredited media arent allowed closer than row 15 (unless you are one of the priveleged minority)

My friend got a slr in last year, he just played dumb really and said the lens doesnt come off and gave the lens a gentle tug to show it didnt come off.(obviously not hitting the release button for the lens!)

To get the camera in, a good trick is to carry a coat in your hand and have it inside your coat, they will usually forget to check it.

Best bet is to bring your smallest lens and take off the battery grip.

the same rules that apply to wembley apply to every football ground in the UK at every level

also accredited media are not allowed to take photographs from the seats

hth :)

here's an idea of what you can see from the top row

thats the main problem with the ROC.. the security there dont realise that its not a football match! I'm hoping that this year they wont be such arse holes

haha take your passport and other bits... get walked from A to B by security... I photographed at a cup final and a play off and its very security concious... but saying that they also looked after us.. plenty of food and drink and runners checking on anything you need while game on :)

didnt find either event made me much money when tkaing in traveling from up here.. so have given up on wembley events unless i get commisioned ..

ta :)

this years shots will be better.. i learned a lot from last year and where the best places to shoot from are

so are you gona be sitting at row 15 this year as well ? I think I will be sitting bit further up ;-)

i'll be moving around.. if you see me grab me and give me a sip of your beer :)

so can me move about? or do you need a press pass for it ?
and no one said i drink beer :naughty:

I went last year, but didn't bother with taking any pictures as I was quite far back, I just concentrated on keeping warm and enjoying the racing!

you need a press pass..

and yes, keeping warm is a good tip. it was freezing last year.
but with lewis being there this year there will probably be more crowd to help up the ambient temp :)

I went to ROC last year, they didn't appear to be confiscating any cameras, the stewards seemed more intent on making sure no one had any cans of drink in their bags and removing lids from bottles of drink.
We were sat in the second row of the Middle teir last year. This is what I acheived with my Panasonic Bridge camera. 18 x optical lens no crop what you see is what you get.

This year we are sat at the side by the bridge, row 10 of the second teir.

Yes it was a bit chilly last year, this year I'm wearing my thermals.

I got away with it when I saw Muse at Wembley Stadium, even then I was told not to use it as Security would confiscate it. I dunno how they would considering I was right in the middle in the standing area so they couldn't see me :D I guess it's different for you.

Is Lewis actually taking part? Or is it just a demonstration?

i'd say your photos show you might as well just bring a bridge camera anyway.
in fact i'm considering borrowing one and using it for the extra zoominess

I'd only had the camera about a week last year and still getting used to it, a year older and wiser, hopefully I'll get some better sharper results.:D

so at that point I have no idea what will I do :D will I take it or not with me;)
maybe if I would have only one lens with me... hmmm

Do you know what row you are sitting in?

If it was me, i'd just leave the camera at home and enjoy the event without it.. Maybe its just me, but sometimes i actually look forward to watching something without a camera between me and the subject :)

What a strange person hahahahaha :)

nagh.. i cant remember the last time i was able to do that... hmm

Actually that's very true. I photographed Polo all last season except for the last tournament where I was just a spectator. It was only then that I realised I hadn't actually watched any Polo for the whole season!

Most likely it will end up like this:D and I will have both hands free to hold a beer and coffe at the same time;-)
I think I will be sitting around row 30 ? just somewhere close to some barriers (not sure doh because someone bought tickets for me ;)
I could try to find you there if I would knew how to find you :) identify you :)

Do these people who make up the rules even visit their local electronics store like Currys or PC World?! They all sell D-SLRs and pretty much all them to non professionals, e.g. Mr and Mrs Public who just want to take good photos. :bang:

I emailed them prior to the NFL UK american football match last month. They said no professional cameras, with their definition being detachable lenses. A real shame, as I was in Row 14 of the lower tier, with Rows 1-10 not being used. Could have got some great shots from there - especially of the cheerleaders! I did see more than one dSLR in there being used, so they don't appear to be too worried about policing it (at Stewards level).

my late father-in-law used to take his 35mm SLR with monsterous russian reflector lens (1000mm IIRC) to Wembly - gone are the days it seems :(

I got in with my SLR at Wembley last year to the Johnstones Paint Trophy Final - I didn't think to check before I left home whether it would be allowed or not but the guy on the gate checked my bag and waved me through no problem at all. Shots weren't great from so far back, but got a few good ones of the winning team at the end :)

Not sure I'd risk it again, though I can't see an individual steward turning someone away who has travelled all that distance to get there.....
