We have a sign on our front door which clearly states No callers, No salespersons, No polititians etc.,........so why was the young chap who knocked on my door a moment ago offended when I told him to sling his hook?

Granted, He couldn't have picked a worse day, but seriously, could he not read?

Our similar sign is stuck just above the doorbell button and still the fickwuts ring!
 
Depends, does it really say "No Callers", or is it just one of those 'no cold-calling' stickers and if so was he a trader?

Very specific assuming you have a gate and/or doorbell/knocker, the standard stickers issued by councils (for example) prohibit cold-calling by 'traders' and do not include people from charities, political parties or religious organizations.
 
We dont have a gate. We have a large drive, and a large bright yellow sign before you get to the front door which screams "SOD OFF" to callers.
 
There you go then, need to adjust your sign :D

There is no law to prevent people from cold calling. The stickers provided by councils/trading standards can't prohibit people from calling, they are merely an indication to would-be callers that they are not welcome and to expect a frosty response from the resident.

I have a sign that states We are not interested in your products, in your services or your beliefs so please do no knock on our door. My girlfriend hates it says it comes across as being rude but to be fair we have very few people knock on our door. People who want to spread the word of christ though don't appear to be able to read.

It is not that they are illiterate but that they want to convert you, if attractive enough (euphemism following >) 'knock on your front door' 'ring your bell' 'open your letter box' ' tap on your window' 'go around the back and use the tradesman's entrance'...............
 
One of the old English laws that has never been ammended as far as I am aware, is that if going to somebody`s house. You shoild knock the door, go back to the street/road and wait to be invited on to their property.

Ah, see... That would make sense. It would be so much easier to toss the contents of a chamber pot from the upstairs bedroom window at the offending 'knocker' without getting it all on your doorstep.

I have a similar sign on my front door (95% effective). I once heard two chaps approach and before they knocked the door I heard one say "We'll get the usual can't you read comment". I opened the door after they knocked and said that since you can read and chose to ignore the sign that makes you an ignorant b'stard.
 
Lovely story, which I really hope is true, about an enterprising chap who toured neighbourhoods looking for 'no callers' signs. He would then knock, point out that the existing sign was small or faded, and sell them a brand-new one...

When I had a house that was in a popular turning location, it bothered me.

But that was entirely down the the fact that people turning round on the end of my drive was slowly but surely causing damage that I would have to pay to fix.

Turning is, I admit, a pain; but it doesn't involve people knocking on the door (or ringing the doorbell), and therefore thrusting themselves into your everyday life.

But I often see such signs in the middle of a long stretch of road where nobody would want to turn anyway.

been thinking about getting one of these signs myself, we seem to get an awful lot of religious groups turning up to preach their beliefs on a weekend. Ive managed to hide from them a couple of times, but my 4 yr old son has taken to shouting "theres someone at the door mum" quite loudly, so cant hide when hes home.
I think the mormons have stopped since the OH told them that they were beginning to freak me out a bit, they spoke to me like they were planning for me to be their next wife 0_o
 
There's a big sign on my front door thats says "Disabled, please ring intercom and wait to be let in".. there's also a big arrow pointing to the intercom button.. so how come I get postmen hammering so hard on my front door it sounds like red troop doing a forced entry? it's not just the posty either, its the majority of callers.

I can only conclude that either..

A - The majority of callers are blind
B - That they cant read
C - That they're all retarded
 
I've got a sign that says no hawkers no leaflets etc. Once in a while I see someone walk up the drive, pause at the door and then turn back, I'd say it works 1% of the time.

My doorbell name tag used to say "Press here to activate minefield" but no-one would :lol: Now it says "Press it and he will come"
