Hi all,

Just purchased a Sigma 70-200 ii f2.8 APO EX DG Macro and i cannot get the AF to work on my Nikon D5500.

Is it an incompatibility issue with my body?
Am i missing something silly? (A setting?)
Or is it a fault with the lens?

Other nikon lenses i have focus fine with the AF and the camera is definately in Auto!

Firmware -
C - 1.01
L - 2.015

Advice?

The spec of the lens you mention has no HSM which is the Sigma built in focusing motor. With the D5300 not having an internal focusing motor, this looks like your issue.

The lens has HSM written on it.

Im aware my D5500 might not have an internal AF motor, but the lens should

Definitely needs more research then. You should be achieving autofocus.

Im not sure what i need to be researching.
It should work - the only conclusion i can come to is a faulty motor in the Lens. - If so i need to be returning the item.

Is it brand new ? Have you tried the lens on another camera ? Cleaned the contacts if second hand etc.

Update - it works on a D3300.
So its possibly not the lens.

I thought of that at the same time as you!
No switches on the lens.

Do i need to consider updating my camera body firmware? Im not sure if the edition i have is old.

Ahh so it appears i need to update the lens, and failing that the body.

Sorry to be a total noddy, but how do you update the lens? I dont have a dock and cant see any visible areas to plug the lens in to?

You need to send it to Sigma.

Im updating the firmware for the body to 1.02 doubt it will make any difference. If not i will try restoring to an older version.

Works fine on 1.00 on thr D3300!

At least you know where the problem lies now. Good luck getting it sorted out.

Yes it should be different.

No luck with 1.02
If i did a factory reset, it will take it back to 1.00 i would expect. Does anyone think that will make any difference, or is it a waste of time? - and i should just send it off to sigma.

- am i going to get a huge bill?

A factory reset will not downgrade firmware. You'll need to do some googling and see if you can get your camera back to the firmware version before Nikon 'crippled' your lens.

Sigma have resolved the problem via an update to the firmware for their lens.

Which route you go depends on you.

The lens its a new purchase from a member on here, so its never worked on my D5500.
I have tried 1.01 and 1.02 so i will try and find a download for 1.00.

If that fails, its off to sigma.

Don't waste your time - there isn't one. Just send the lens to Sigma.

I quickly realised that last night after a google.
I will fill out the online form and then send it off.
