Just an introduction before I start posting, only good manners etc.

I come from 3 generations of Photographers.
As a small child I shared my attic bedroom with my sister and my Grandfathers Dark Room, on the West coast of Scotland. I can still remember the red light and the smell of the chemicals, even the taste of some!

Grandfather had been an expert witness in the area of Photography with a Scottish Police Force before retiring and becoming a reporter/photographer for the local New Galloway News. Several times I was taken from school to stand next to an object of interest (Bull, tree felled in storm etc).

This early introduction to photography obviously planted a seed as I have been in and out a few times.

Back when I was on the YTS in the late 80's early 90's I had a 35mm which went everywhere with me. Finding film not wound on was a pain of my life and a frustration I will remember for a long time to come. In the end my complete kit that I had scraped together was stolen out of the back of my old Ford Fiesta and that left me bitter and without camera for a long time.

In 2002, my Sister who has become a very accomplished photographer herself, started a further education photography course and was buying a Nikon F75? 35mm camera with lens kit. She contacted me pointing out a good deal and once more I was back with camera in hand. Now living in London I was taking pictures but my head was not in it and the timing was not right for me. It was not until I went to a photo shoot with my wife to be, that Digital Photography came in to my consciousness. I remember that shoot was around 600 pictures - my sister did it.
So much was realised about this unknown art. The biggest thing for me was the lack of cost and the steep learning curve. In the YTS days, it some times took over a month to get film processed and see the results. Now you could see what worked and what did not between shots.

One way or another, expensive hobbies, getting married, buying house, having children etc have all stopped me from progressing on with getting a digital camera until recently.
My father, himself now retired and taking pictures almost daily, has very kindly treated me to some excellent kit which I am starting to get to grips with. Now proud owner of a Nikon D90 and 3 quality Sigma lenses up to 500mm.

I feel that I am now in a place where with the help of those around me, and my neighbour who suggested this forum, that I am in a place to take this forward and start taking some pictures worthy of boring people with.

Hi Dave - What a great introduction, sounds like you had some great experiences when you were younger with your grandfather!

Good that you have got back into it, I hope that you enjoy it as much as you used to and that you are really awakened with anticipation and excitement.

Look forward to seeing you around
