Hi,

I've just bought a Nissin Di866 (going to sell my 2 580EX II and ST-E2) and want some valued opinion on whether I should get two LumoPro LP120s or 2 Nissin Di622s - both are around same price after paying import duties etc on the LumoPros.

Or any other options?

Many thanks

Hi HoppyUK,

Thanks for the reply but can I ask why you say stick with the Canons? As far as I can tell from reading the manual and reviews on the web the Nissin does what it says on the tin. I've also had a play with the menu and it is much much easier to operate than the 580s. I'm aware of the Yongnuos and Flash in the pan but personally didn't find those guns appealing. Decisions decisions - now trying to decide whetehr to get three Di866s or another 580EX II.

Hi HoppyUK,

Why stick with the Canon guns? Because there is nothing better for a Canon user. Other guns may be as good, though I doubt it, but nothing better. I don't even believe the miniscule claimed power advantage of the Nissin will be born out in practice (which is a very good gun by all accounts, and excellent value).

The only reason not to buy Canon is price. 580EXII is fantastic, not just in terms of basic spec and main features, but in terms detailed spec and less used features, build quality, weather proofing, performance, reliability etc etc. Even little things that go unnoticed like the fact that the auto white balance is modified to take into account the slightly different colour temperature at various power levels.

How is it hard to operate?

I've found my 430ex to recycle faster than any 3rd party gun whether they were bigger and more powerful or not. I think the cashy money that you spend on canon guns is carried out in the abuse they take (and mine take a lot) and the way they do their job.

Hi,
Well, I sent the Di866s back and kept hold of my 580 IIs. I also found an old but excellent 420EZ in my for sale box! I'm guessing that although it less powerful it would always be able to be used for times that I don't need the full power of the 580.
Thanks for your help guys - now to get practicing!
