Nikons version to a canon st-e2

SU800

Seriously though, they work fine, as long as you stay out of direct (bright) sunlight. I've even managed to get mine to trigger a flash inside a Westcott Apollo softbox

Well, I'm not so sure, it'll depend on the placement of your speedlight/s. It's IR-based so you need direct line of sight and anyone walking/dancing between you and the lights will probably block the signal, bright lights/flashing strobes etc will also cause it problems...

Would i be better off getting pocket wizards?

What are/were you planning to use the SU-800 for? Would you have the lights off-camera, but in your hand, or would the be set-up on (say) stands around the venue?

For club stuff flash in hand and other stuff all depends on shoot.

Can't you just slave off the camera's pop-up flash in commander mode?

Just to make sure the remote gun gets a decent 'look' at the pop-up's commander signals, maybe put a little diffuser on it of some sort (tissue?) or a bit of card/BluTack to direct the flash towards your left hand. Turn the remote's receiver towards the camera. Should work fine at close range like that, in almost any situation.
