Nikons D50 owner - Do I change?

Hi,

I leap into the DSLR market about 15 months ago and bought a D50. It replaced a Fujifilm S5600 and a Nikon F65 35mm. I used the lenses on the D50which where a 70mm -300mm and 28-80mm G lens.

My 28 -80mm lens has gone the distance. A replacement from ebay is approx £60 new. I should make at least £150 selling my D50 and I have the 70-300mm lens which should make £50.

So for the same kind of money and a bit of hassle I could invest in a new kit. I really fancy the A200 with the 18 -70mm lens for £259 from John Lewis. I will have a lens less at the end of play, but woulnot be a miss to me.

Wanting confirmation really that I am making the correct decision. Should I just get a new 28-80mm lens???

Hi.

I upgraded from the D50 to a shiny new D90 around 4 months ago and it was probably the least significant upgrade I have made so far. There is no doubt there is a clear difference in image quality (especially at high iso) and features but the jump wasn't as massive as changing from a cheapie zoom lens to a quality piece of glass. Personally for the kind of budget you are looking at you could buy a very nice standard zoom ie. Tamron 17-50mm, Sigma 24-70mm, Tamron 28-75mm that would make a bigger difference than the change of body... My opinion of course.
 
Looking for a sidewards step with a price difference of about £60-100 extra. The 28-70 G lens in my opinion has been excellant, so dont feel the need to spend more on just a lens

A200 seem to do poorly in low light, an area that improved with my D50. Dont want to go backwards, so other option is the Nikon D40
 
The only thing with the D40 is the lenses requiring a motor in them to auto focus. So basically the lenses u have will be manual focus only.
 
I hopped from a D50 to a D300, the advantages were the better viewfinder, frame rate, build quality and usability. There's an image quality boost, sure, but it's rarely important. Technique, tripods and lenses come first.

Until the next next big thing comes out, it's probably not worth upgrading the D50 to another consumer model just for the sake of it.
 
I bought a second hand D50 a year ago when I was starting out and it came with a tamron 18-200 lens (which I only used until I had enough money for a better lens). I invested in a good sb flash (600) and saved up for a sigma 10-20 and a sigma 17-70 ( which never leaves my camera). I got really great shots from my D50. This month I upgraded to a D90, but have kept the d50 as a back up camera!

I think if you cant afford the upgrade save up for some good quality glass perhaps? And ultimately save for a camera upgrade. I wouldnt sell your d50 they are great cameras which are discontinued, hence why I wont consider parting with mine even now!

Agree, if anything go for a second hand D80 about £300ish, will give you some added benefits such as the Nikon CLS system should you buy a speedlight in the future :)
 
Nice shots there Louise, nice and sharp and clear, just shows you don't always need the very latest camera as long as you have a decent lens, although the D50 was and still is a great little camera,it was my first DSLR, i should have kept it for a carry around :)

Thanks, I just wanted to show bazza that its a great camera with great results. My pictures improved dramatically when I got the 17-70!

Bazza, I hope you stick with the d50 and just upgrade your glass!

Let us know how you get on what you decide to do!
 
I actually preferred my D50 to my D80, in fact I missed it so much when I sold both it and the D80 to get a D300 I ended up buying another one :cuckoo:
 
Update-

Managed to get a Nikon D60 and 18-55VR lens today for £260 with a 2 year warranty

D60 doesnot feel nice in my hands. But seems to be producing better shoots than my D50 with the same lens. Better colours but seem to be a little too white on people. Auto focus is much better on the D50, getting a lock straight away

Will do some more comparison shots at the Weekend and sell the body I know no longer requirer. Honestly 50/50 at the minute, but its I was pushed I would go D50 at the minute.

If I sell the D60 for £200, I have got 18-55 VR for £59
 
Question - I have set my ISO on my D40. But it keeps changing back to Auto when it's on different shoot models. D50 stays the same no matter what. Any ideas?
