I'm considering changing my Nikon 16-85 and 70-300 following a recent shoulder operation purely to cut down on weight to an 18-300, what is confusing me at the moment is looking at various reviews, some have the filter size as 67mm and others as 77mm. Does anybody know when and why there was a change, obviously 67mm would suit me better as that is the filter size I already have, and I know when I buy one, hopefully on here, I only have to ask the seller, but it does seem strange. Any ideas?

According to Uncle Ken, the newer version has 67mm filters and is lighter and smaller. Launched around June 2014.

There are two versions of this lens - I believe the earlier version is f5.6 at the long end and 77mm filters and the later version is f6.3 at the long end and 67mm filters. The newer version is considerably lighter but has a smaller max aperture at the the long end

Thanks Guys
if you have the original ...look inside the lens cap (y) ha ha sorry should have read the whole post bit difficult if you don't own it yet ...ooops

No problem Mike, thanks for taking the trouble to reply anyway.

I have the Nikon AF-S DX Nikkor 18-300 f3.5 - f6.3 G ED VR lens, and it takes a 67mm filter. The other 18-300 f3.5 - f5.6 takes the 77mm filter.

Thanks Logicearl, I'll have to make sure I get the newer version, not only for the 67mm filter thread but also because of the lower weight as that is the object of the exercise.
