I was thinking about buying the Nikon 50mm f1.8 S to use as a portrait lens on my Z50, until my kidney sells and I can afford a Z7. But will that combination yield any image stabilisation? The lens is not described as a "VR" model, and there's no IBIS in the Z50 body. I'm scratching my head.

If there is no IBIS in the Z50 then you won't get any on the lens, as that doesn't have it. Arguably, do you need it..? For around £100 it's not a bad lens... I'm using the canon flavor - the 50mm 1.4 on my EOS R and it's a match made in heaven...

You won't get any IS but as above you wouldn't really need unless shooting under 1/75sec or an unsteady hand, you would not get any IS shooting this lens on any Nikon DSLR and most use these lenses on this format.

The Nikon S 50mm F1.8 has no IS nor as you have pointed already will your Z50.

I have both lens and body. No ibis on z50 and no vr on the 50mm 1.8S.
The 2 DX zoom lenses bundled with the Z50 are both VR.
The full frame 50mm 1.8S was launched around the same time as the Z6/7 and has no VR but those 2 full frame bodies do have ibis.
Nikon's Z DX offerings are sparse at the moment.

So, back to the old days with this combo.

Thanks Peter. I was beginning to fear as much. Do you have a Z6 or Z7? Will either of those give image stabilization with AFS-G lenses?
I am looking for an incremental way of moving from F to Z, rather than junking everything at once!

Yes I have the Z7.
And yes IBIS works with F mount AF-S G lenses. (using FTZ).
Please note that you cannot use AF with Z cameras if you mount a Nikon D lens (e.g. the 105mm F2 etc) - using FTZ of course.
IBIS also works with Nikon manual focus lenses which can be mounted via the FTZ. But you have to remember to set up the focal length before IBIS will work with these.
There is a thread on Fred & Miranda showcasing manual focus lenses with the Z's.

As an extra note, the 50mm 1.8S and 85mm 1.8S are the 2 best Nikon Z primes IMO.

Thanks for the lens recommendation. At this stage it's going to be the 50mm!

I am asking about using the Nikon 50mm f1.8 S (here) on the mirrorless DX Z50 body.

Yes I was trying to point out that you be of no more a disadvantage using this lens on your Z50 anymore than you would be on a DSLR as these don't have in body IS either.
