I'm interested in these cameras. Has anyone here had a try with one. Of all the mirrorless offerings currently available they seem to tick most boxes for me but I'm slightly suspicious of the AF system, particularly when used for tracking moving objects, though also for still subjects. Reading between the lines of the few reviews I have read, they seem to be having a problem. It's the main thing that puts me off. On the DPR review not every single continuous AF shot was soft. Is this something firmware could tackle I wonder?
 
Wait for all the reviews then real world user feedback before you come to any conclusions.
I reckon by next spring we will know the Z's strengths and weaknesses.
 
Yes, I'd wait and see. It may be that the first generation of cameras won't do justice to the full potential of the system. Nikon didn't really have good AF in SLRs until the F5.
 
I've been known to drop on a new spec camera :giggle: but this is one I would definitely 'wait and see' before buying.
 
yes, I'm intrigued by the AF issue. TBH the only reasons I didn't spring for the D850 is the weight. Too puny, that's my trouble :)

Yes I've used the Z7 but only in store and not for panning. The AF is 'good' but it doesn't blow you away, not as snappy as my D850. It struggled slightly more with my 24-70mm f2.8 on the adapter than it did with the native 24-70mm f4, every now and then there was a moment's hesitation and you could see it very quickly hunting.
 
I have used it in LCE when they had the event on for Nikon Z.
I found the AF rather unreliable. Got about 50% hit rate. I used it for slightly over 30 minutes so I would take this with a grain of salt.
 
Cant see the point in some of these mirrorless cameras, yes i use mirrorless and have done for a couple of years, my change was due to needing smaller lighter gear (m4/3) if i didnt i would struggle to see the benifit over a DSLR especialy for moving subjects.

Yes i am exited by the development and perhaps one day they will lock focus on a flying bird as well as the D500 does but i have my doubts they are at that point yet.

May want to try some of the newer models then.

Should try the A7iii, A9, or EM1ii
 
Agreed. I was m43 and looked to go e-m1.1 to 1.2. The latter was better as you'd expect but the d500 is in a different league so I bought the Nikon instead.

I am intrigued by the Sony though... :whistle:
 
Before this thread goes too far OT, mirrorless cameras can catch action ime just saying even cameras like the EM1MK11 are not as efficient as top DSLRs yet

Couldn't be happier with the Sony mirrorless system in terms of AF. Finding it much better than the d750 and as good as d850 in my real world shooting. I was very skeptical about mirrorless til the latest sonys came along, now, I wouldn't go back to dslr.
