Nikon Z* mirrorless

Out of interest which flashgun ( occasional use only ) would be best on the Z8 , already got a sb900 but not yet tested on it

I still use my SB800 and SB600 units but in studio I use Godox flash and trigger units . All work well.

Do you guys have experience buying refurbished lens from Nikon site?
Are these good quality and condition or can you also get old worn items?

Everything refurbished I've purchased from them has been like new. I did have to return a 180-600mm lens, I suspect it had internal damaged whilst in the transport, as focus was off. I quite recently picked up a refurbished Z50II and it had 0 shutter count.
I'd always recommend giving it a good testing on arrival, just to be sure.

I can say that the Nikon refurbished items are like new, with full warranty but the price is reduced. I purchased my 14-30mm f4 from them via the refurbished section and it is flawless.
Refurbished may also mean it has gone to a dealer stock but been returned due to overstocking!

There's currently a winter sale due to end on the 26th of this month, they could follow that with a refurbished sale. If you know someone with a Unidays account, you can get good deals by combining refurbished, refurbished sale and Unidays discount. But with the refurbished sales, stock is limited in selection and quantity.

just tried the SB900 and its working fine , that saves a few bob thankfully

Hmmm. Being a long standing wildlife photographer and having had a fair amount of success in the past I tend to stick to tried and tested methods, my main one being to use apeture priority A/V mode for my shots ..
However on Tues I used M mode with auto I.s.o and got superb results , today I changed back to A mode but left auto iso engaged ,, and the results were terrible with really high I.s.o values . So it looks to me like M mode is the way to go with this beast of a camera .
Might be able to salvage a few shots in the morning but who knows

Yep, just used it, 20% :)

You can set the limits of Auto ISO to what you find acceptable. My limitations are DX 3200, FX 6400 but each to our own ;)

Good morning all, may I ask for some advice please? I will soon be joining the world of Nikon mirrorless and have decided on the 24-200mm lens but am confused as to which body would be best suited. I will be buying used and have a budget of £1000. I mainly shoot woodland, landscapes and seascapes. I have been looking at the Z6ii but wonder if it is overkill for what I do, or whether something like the Z6 or Z5 would suffice. I don't shoot wildlife so a high burst rate would be a waste.
Please advise
Thank you
Simon

Z5, if 24mp is enough for you. Excellent camera and great value used. Uses SD cards as well.

Just an odd question has anyone used any Nikon Z DX lenses on there FF bodies and if so what’s the results , or would it be better to use F mount FF lenses with the FTZii adaptor ???

DX lenses will revert the FF camera to DX sensor size. So a Z8 will become a 20mp camera, as it's just using the DX portion of the sensor.
There's nothing wrong with using them, just this will be the outcome when you do.
To maintain the full 45MP, you'll need to use FF glass.

I've used my 50-250 DX lens on my Z8. It works just fine and you don't even notice it’s a crop lens, because the viewfinder shows the cropped image as full frame - but of course you get 19/20Mp files

I just purchased Nikon 17-28mm lens, just travel etc
It doesn't extend, but it moves inside - so thought I may buy UV filter just to secure front element.
I never used filters, so wanted to check with you guys - does any UV filter will work? Is there anything I should know when bying one?

Also, I thought I could start using ND filter for some landscapes when on a trip.
Would ND3-1000 be enought o cover most of the situations?

This one maybe?

Any issues with those and ultra wide lens, like 17mm?

Hmmm handy to know Graham ,do you have to invoke DX mode on the camera or just leave it set at FF .. interesting as I don’t often use other lenses but the DX Z mounts are obviously cheaper than FF .. got a few F mount lenses in FF but could fill some gaps when I fancy a spend up

Anyone doing video regularly? If so, could I ask a question?

What focal length would you recommend for some talking head type video ?

Looking at a Z6iii for video work for my business and just wondering if I should get 35 / 50 mm F1.8 to go with it.

Likely be set up on small tripod on the desk.

Using DX lenses on a FF Z mount body is better (and worse) than using them on the older F mount DSLR's. Better in that the EVF automatically crops in so is still WYSIWYG, rather than on a DSLR where you just seen a dark grey matt blanking off the FF field of view (with the DX portion left smaller in the middle).

Worse in that on Nikon DSLR's, you could manually select if the camera did a DX crop or not, as some DX lenses, covered or almost covered the FF sensor meaning you got more wide angle from you DX lenses if required. On Nikon Z bodies, the crop is automatic and no way to manually disable it.

As others have said, aside from the above (and the reduction in pixels), it's pretty much like shooting on FF lenses, with the AF etc just as responsive.

Ah makes sense now Andrew , so the DX mode in the camera menu is basically for enlarging a section of a FF lens .. . A 20 mp image isn’t a problem in reality ,as I said it’s only occasional use anyway .

You don't need to do anything as the Z8 by default recognises it’s a DX lens. I think you can switch this off, but not looked into it.

14mm lens options for the Nikon Z?
I'm currently changing around a lot of lenses, primarily getting grid of all my 'f' mounts (almost - the 200 f/2 is staying!).
My Sigma 14-24 has gone. I've looked back over how I used that lens and the majority of the shots with it were at 14mm, then at circa 20mm.
I've also sold my Sigma 14mm f/1.8.
My dilemma is how to cover the 14mm focal range, ideally at f/1.8?
Given how I used my 14-24 I'm tending more towards a 14mm prime and a 20mm prime.
The 20mm is easy, but Nikon has nothing wider than 20mm.
Lots of Chinese 14mm lenses but these are all f/2.8 and above. I do dabble in astrophotography, so the max aperture compromise is one that I probably won't make.

One option is the Sony FE 14mm f/1.8 GM with an adaptor, but I am wary of the potential for the adapter to introduce alignment issues (perhaps unfounded?)
I'm looking particularly at the Megadap ETZ21 Pro+.
Anybody with experience of this combination??
And I suppose I ought to add to this the Sigma 14mm f/1.4 and f/1.8 lenses in Sony E mount (perhaps I should not have sold the 14mm I had!).

And then I can't get the Nikon Z 14-24 f/2.8S out of my head as a nice simple solution, albeit sacrificing maximum aperture....

I have been looking at the Viltrox 16mm f/1.8, but there's a focal length sacrifice that I'm not ecstatic about.

Any options I have missed?
Anybody with experience of the reliability/consistency/practicality of the Megadap?
TIA :)

Now had the Z8 for exactly a week and only been able to use it on two days due to non stop bad weather, getting a tad frustrated with rain at the moment grrrrrr

Unless you specifically need the faster aperture, have you considered the Nikon Z 14-30 F4 S ? I have it and to be honest as I don't use super wide that often, for the odd occasions I've had to, it's been superb. Tack sharp across the frame and at all F/L's, smaller and lighter than the 14-24 F2.8 (and with a slightly longer range) and definitely cheaper (under half the price new). It also takes standard screw in filters.

About the only negative thing I have to say about this lens is that I just wished it wasn't a collapsible design, but for the benefits, I can live with it.

Unfortunately on Z mount bodies you can't disable the automatic crop when using Nikon DX lens (although to be fair I've never tried an F mount DX lens via the FTZ adapter - only native Z mount lenses).

I'll take your word for that as I haven't checked, just seemed to remember seeing it as an option when I was scrolling through the menus.

Considered it, discounted it.
f/4 max aperture
collapsible design
performance not stellar

just got a neoprene lens cover set from outdoor photography gear , for the 180-600VR . perfect fit should protect the lens from any bumps or scratches

I went with the Nikon Z 14-24 2.8 S and couldn't be happier. I use it for landscapes and the odd bit of astro and it's great. The only downside is that the filter options can be expensive. There seem to be rumours that there might be a mk 2 version at some point (as with the 24-70 2.8 S). I'd like to think of that happens they might try to simplify things with regards to filters, but that's all very much speculation
