Nikon Z* mirrorless

Is anyone using the Tamron 70-1800mm G2? I have the original F-mount Nikon 70-200mm F2.8 which I don't use very often but I'm starting to think that's partially down to the fact it's a pretty big lens, with the daylight being limited at the moment I've been toying with the Tamron for its smaller size/weight and not as high price.

No, but I have the Nikon 70-180 which I think is based on the first gen tamron, and really rate it! Don’t use it anywhere near as much as I should, but it’s so much smaller than the 70-200 models!

I had the pleasure of using the Z 20mm f1.8 S for over a month in Kenya (courtesy of Nikon UK) and was totally smitten by it. Well constructed, sharp and little to no distortions. Have added to my list to Santa...

Same here.
Don't forget the Nikon version will take tc's I'm not sure the Tamron does this.

Taken with the 70-180 and 1.4 tc (exif is wrong)

The lion was taken on a 20mm lens?! You’re braver than I am by a county mile!!

Why is this forum group not that active?
Sorry, I've not taken a lot of photos recently. I've been learning the darkside of video editing and colour grading.

I do need to get my cameras back out again though. On a positive, I did check the camera over the other day lol

That's helpful, so the smaller size/weight hasn't changed your use of the lens type?

I have a one year old baby which has been the main reason none of my lenses have seen much action recently!

But the 70-180 can fit upright into a small messenger bag while mounted to the camera, which just makes the carrying options so much easier.

I also had the Nikon version of the 70-180mm f2.8 lens. The problem I encountered with the lens was it was soft wide open in the range 70-105mm. It got better by stopping down to
f4 > f5.6. So I bought the Nikon 70-200mm lens which is fantastic, but heavier than the 70-180mm.

As for Tamron, I have the 28-75mm f2.8 G2 and the 16-30mm f2.8 G2 lenses which I'm pleased with. So hopefully the G2 70-180mm will be better than the Nikon version I previously owned.

Bit the bullet and ordered a 35mm 1.8 from LCE this morning, having managed to haggle a bit with them for a nice mint used copy.

Really interested to see how good it is against the little 40mm f2. All the reviews I‘ve seen of the two seem very mixed.

Thinking of moving from Fuji X-T4 to a Nikon ZF, and was wondering has anyone done similar and had any regrets?

Handling is a lot different. (I have an x-t5).
New set of lenses to buy?
What are you going to shoot with it?

I swopped my ZF for an Z5ii - I prefer the handling.

I've got some Nikon glass as I have a D700, but happy to buy some Z specific lenses,

I am returning back to shooting models as a hobby, not every week or month, but I will do a couple of villa trips a year.

I grew up shooting with Nikon film cameras so I think it would suit my style,

Maybe I need to have a trip to Harrisons in Sheffield to try one out.

I made the same move back in August, and so far I have no regrets.
I think the weight issue is overstated somewhat, depending on individual use cases. For example I'd most commonly use the Fuji with either the 18mm 1.4 or the 33mm 1.4. Using my walkaround options of the 28mm and 40mm SE, the ZF and lens combination is lighter. Not only that, but with the weight being in the body rather than the lens, it hangs on a strap so much better, not being front heavy. Even with the 2 cheaper lenses, I find the look of the images much more pleasing too.
I bought the Tamron 150-500 for a trip to Argentina, and I bought the smallrig 'leather' halfcase, which I found improved the handling when using the big lens, as it adds a little more grip at the front and a nubbin for the thumb. It comes off when I'm not using the Tamron though, as I really don't find it hard to handle with smaller lenses. It's talked about a lot, but I don't get the fuss.
I think the one thing that would have been nice to have would have been the ability to quickly override aperture priority by dialling in a shutter value, which I used to do quite a lot with the Fuji, but I quickly got used to just flipping the Pasm switch into shutter priority, it's not been a problem.

And, unexpectedly, and sacrilegiously, despite having been Fuji since the X-T1, if I'm honest, I missed the aperture rings for about 10 minutes.

Thanks Nick, appreciate your time.

Weight is not an issue for me as I use the X-T4 with a grip and 16-55 or 50-140 lenses.

I moved from Nikon when the X-Pro1 came out and have had virtually every Fuji since and enjoyed the journey

I'm off to Harrisons in Sheffield to have a play with one tomorrow. :)

I think that's the only sensible way. I had a good long play with one at the Photography Show early in the year, and I had the Fuji with me too at the time for comparison.... That's when the seed was planted.

The latest Nikon 24-70 2.8 S ii has already dropped from the launch price of £2,600 to £2,000 from official dealers!
I really would like a smaller set of Z lenses with f2.8 apertures. My 24-120 f4 Z lens is huge compared to my older Nikon F mount lenses. If the 24-120 f4 was f2.8 then I could live with it but at f4 it is gross.

Sorry to bother you folks,

Just wondering if anyone uses their Z8 for video also?

I'm doing a bit more video now, primarily with my action cameras, shooting in Log and editing in Davinci.

Quite fancy having a go at using the Z8.

Just wondered if anyone had any helpful pointers or external sites worth reading?

I'd only use it for a Vlog type video and it's purely out of curiosity at this point.

Many thanks
Adam

I’ve used it a fair bit for videoing wildlife and it’s been superb. However I’ve never used it for vlogging, as it’s a big heavy beast, and holding that at arms length would get tiresome really quickly I think.

Sorry I meant vlog but on a tripod at home just talking head type stuff.

I'm just curious really and just wanted to try the Z8 out.

I'm contemplating getting a z6 iii also but would have to move on one of my OM1.cameras.
Have you thought of the new Zr if video is your main use?

It won't bey main use.

I just wanted to test the Z8 out for it's video capability.

I'm mainly using my action cameras for the videos I do currently.

I have two OM1 cameras which are not great video spec wise but the Z8 is a bit of a beast I'm lead to understand. So I wanted to give that a go. It's not ideal for video given the screen / panel and I don't have external screens and things to link up to it.

I've been contemplating moving one of my OM1 cameras and three lenses on and replacing with a Z6 iii. I'd keep the other OM1 and 90 mm macro for that purpose.

The Z6 iii is also pretty good video wise and has a flip out screen, so may be easier to use than the Z8.

But I've also been looking at the Z5 ii.

Basically remove the OM1 travel camera set up (8-25, 12-40 F2.8 and 40-150) and then just use the Z6 iii and the 24-120.

But....the OM lenses are so nice, I just haven't done it yet.

About the only thing I don’t like about my OM-1 is its video performance. If you shoot 8 bit (to get access to all the colour profiles), it’s soft (and more so in 4k 50p). Shoot in 10 bit and you really only are able to shoot in Log or HLG formats only. Coupled with that, I’ve found the OM-1 Video AF to be very average (unlike its photo mode where it’s superb). I have the Z8 and Z6 III and for video, they crucify the OM-1.

Another body to suggest is the Sony A6700. I purchased one of these to replace my OM-1 as my travel set up. Considering it’s APS-C, the body is actually smaller and lighter than the OM-1, has 26mp, shoots amazing video (4k 60p oversampled with no crop), even 4k 120p (albeit with a crop), all in 10bit 422 depth, and pretty much has industry leading AF. I coupled this with the Sony 10-20PZ F4 and the 18-135 F3.5-5.6, and it’s turned into a cracking travel package with great image quality and superb video. Yes it’s lacking a few of the OM-1’s bells and whistles (twin card slots, higher res viewfinder etc) but I’m really unjoying the compactness and lightness of this package,

Just a thought ?

That's a great reply. Thank you.

I was trying to keep within mounts I already use otherwise it opens me up to Sony GAS lol

Reality is, I will probably just buy the Z6 iii and keep everything lol.

I'm like a womble (I hate getting rid of things) which is bad at 43 years of age lol

I am too which is why I have so much gear. I can’t stand the thought of selling bits for a fraction of what I paid for them unless I’m sure I’ll never use it again.

There are at least two of us then lol

Unfortunately me too as well, I still have all my 4/3 gear (the DSLR stuff, not the m4/3) which has done nothing now for almost 20 years.
