Nikon Z* mirrorless

Some excellent photos with the 14-24 f2.8.

You give me some excellent advice on the 14-24mm lens a good few weeks ago on here. Anyway I ordered the lens from Cotswold Cameras on 21/8 and I had a notification from DHL the lens was due for delivery the following Thursday 28th. I checked the tracking on the 27th to find the lens had been pulled and was being returned to supplier. Contacted Cotswold and they advised PayPal had blocked the payment. Contacted PayPal and they advised the payment had gone to Cotswold. Cotswold stated they hadn't received the money, back and for for nearly two weeks as we were going on holidays for a fortnight on Sept 13th.

@phinix Due to it being so close to the holidays I ended up buying the Tamron 16-30mm f2.8 lens from Carmarthen Cameras and had next day delivery on Sept 11th so just in time for my holiday. From initial impressions it seems it will be a good lens and I'll keep it. So will save a few quid and buy from Panamoz the Nikon Z 24-70mm f2.8 V2 lens when the prices start to fall.

I had my refund from PayPal on 1/10 after raising a dispute not sure what the problem was but very annoying for me. Anyone else having or had similar problems?
Thanks for the comment on the photos :D

Have to say, I've never used them but that's pretty rubbish from Cotswold. I'd have been tempted by the Tamron 16-30 if it'd been available when I was in the market for something in that focal range.. I have the Tamron 28-75 G2 in Z mount and I rate it (barring the odd irritating focussing issue). I'm also watching the 24-70 Mk2 prices with interest (and could be tempted if it drop significantly like the Mk1 did)

Whoa !!!

This slipped under my Radar.
Tamron have released the 70-180 G2 in Z mount.
I’ve got the lovely 28-75 G2 and have always said that should they bring to 70-180 G2 to Z mount I’d have to have it.
But I’ve managed perfectly well without that range…

I'd have seriously considered it as a smaller and lighter alternative to the Nikon Z 70-200 F2.8, however when I saw it doesn't accept any teleconverters at all, it sort of stopped me in my tracks :(

Isn't there a Nikon version of this that does accept the Nikon TC's?

The Nikon version does take TCs, but it's based on the older Tamron model, which isn't meant to be as good optically.

As well as taking TCs, the Nikon version uses Nikon's AF motors, has improved weather sealing and different lens coatings.

It would be nice if Nikon gave us a "Nikonised" version of this second version of the lens, but I would have thought they would have done that by now if it was going to happen.

Fair point - same story as with the Nikon 28-75 2.8 then. I can't see Nikon updating either as they won't want to affect sales of the Nikon-designed S line lenses

Except, the Tamron built lenses would appear to be low cost alternatives to the S line lenses, without compromising the "reputation" of the S-line.

It's a way to catch customers who find the cost of S-line lenses beyond them, but will spend a little bit extra for a Nikon badged Tamron lens (especially as they aren't simply re-badged Tamrons, but have been customised by Nikon).

What Nikon do long term is the question, the Nikonised Tamrons allows them to more quickly expand their lens range, but maybe now there is less rush to expand their range, we may never see another Nikonised Tamron.

I'm tempted by this lens as well because I didn't realise how small it was, there's a good picture of it in someone's hands at the top of the DPR article:

I've not missed a 70-200mm F2.8 for a while however on returning to F-mount I've been using the Nikon 70-200mm F2.8 mk1 more than I expected but it's a bit hefty for carrying it out and about, The Tamron looks that much smaller that I'd potentially use it more.

The fact that you've managed perfectly without it is not the point...you know what you have to do! :)

As you say, what they've released makes sense - it's really helped to flesh out the product line quickly.

Who knows what's next - there doesn't seem to be a lot in the pipeline lens-wise from what I've seen. They've covered a lot of bases when it comes to lenses with widespread appeal and the marquee sports/wildlife lenses and there's certainly some interesting innovation with the likes of the longer PF primes and sports/wildlife lenses with inbuilt TC's. That said, I haven't seen rumours of anything I'd consider a little more niche such as tilt-shift lenses, longer macro, sports/wildlife zoom lenses for example. It may be that there just isn't the sales potential for such lenses to make development and bringing them to market viable.

I agree that the development costs for niche lenses, may mean we wait some time for them. Nikon are also particularly active with video kit at the moment and a new range of video-centric lenses is promised.

Some the f-mount lenses with the FTZ fill some gaps, and I suspect they may well not be able to substantially improve on them by moving to a Z mount. The 300 f4, 500m f5.6 and the 120- 300 f2.8, or 180-400 f4 TC come to mind. I think Z equivalents will come, but maybe not a priority.

The more immediate gaps I see, is the need to flesh out the "classic" range of f1.4 lenses, with 85mm and 28mm focal lengths. I also think they should build on the success of the Zf and do a Zeiss by getting Voightlander to build a small range of Nikon badged manual focus lenses that are weather sealed. Plus a new rangefinder style Zf. But I'm a bit with my thinking on these lenses.

I've also downloaded and made an account for the Nc Studio software, but can't see on there where the official Nikon marketplace for NP3 files are?
I thought that NP3 files were freely exchangeable as they are just a set of custom settings. You could probably zip a NP3 file up and share it as an attached file here on the forum.

Picked up a Refurbished 400mm f/4.5 yesterday from Nikon.co.uk.
I'm looking forward to using it.
I got an email to say the refurbishished ones were back in stock on Nikons website. It must have been a while ago when I setup the email alert as I’ve had the 400 f4.5 for 18 months now. Great lens that impresses me the more I use it. My recent deer photos were all taken with the 400 f4.5.

A highly underrated lens, whenever I use mine, it never fails to impress, I am off to Bushy Park tomorrow and Monday, I think it will be glued to my Z8

I've had one setup for a long time too and this is the first time it's alerted me that a refurbished was in stock. With the current refurbished discount and Unidays discount on top, made it a no brainer. It's been on my radar for a very long time.

Photo taken during the longest and craziest fight I’ve ever seen during the rutting season.

The Big Fight by -Rob'81-

It’s pretty much as shot with a lityle cropped off the top and bottom for a 16x10 pano crop. I quite like a pano style crop for rut fight photos. I would have liked a bit more ‘breathing space’ on each side but I’m glad I didn’t chop off a leg!

Animal AF definitely makes things easier and lets me concentrate getting it in frame rather worry about moving the focus point around. The Z8 has definitely changed how I shoot wildlife, especially using the rear screen when getting low to the ground.

Hi

For those using the Viltrox 85mm what are your thoughts on the lens please?

And are there two versions of the lens as some add show it as STM II.

Thank you

Some impressive new Nikon Z APS-C lenses - finallly……

Now we just need a Z version of the D500 pro APS-C body, and I think it would make the APS-C line up in Nikons range quite compelling.

Nice couple of additions. I think an apsc range finder style is more likely. If that’s successful, a FF version will follow. Just like how the Zfc/zf appeared.

Nice to see the DX line up get some love. I too am hoping for a top end DX like the D500, but with hopefully a few more megapixels, 24-30 would be nice.
Although the Z50II is quite a good camera, they just need a DX with IBIS, Joystick, 1/8000th/sec shutter and use the en-el15c battery.
I think it would sell very well.

Well, there was I wandering down a single lane tarmac lane in the middle of Northumberland, a beautiful day, sun was shining and just a whiff of a breeze giving a lovely cooling touch. The way the light reflected off my OM1 and 300mm F4 as the QD connection failed and the camera and lens dropped like a Wile E. Coyote strapped to an acme rocket was amazing!

So, one thing has led to another and I'm looking at getting a Z5 with 24-70 S lens. But then I'm torn between this and a Z6ii.

Be doing landscape photography with very occasional astro photography. I'm after best image quality, I'm not a pro but it's a hobby and if not this I'll spend the money of something else anyway :)

Looking for advice, please, on whether people feel the additional cost of the Z6ii is worth it for the image quality increase?

Just to add - I'm aware there are other brands and options, but I started with a D3300 before getting a D610; D610 being awesome IMHO. Only left Nikon as wanted something lighter so went to Oly for a Em-10 then OM1 shortly after. Always felt OM1 stunning for wildlife but I was never 100% ok compromise with the landscape shots.

Very sorry to hear about the drop.
Which brand of strap and plate/L bracket were you using?

I think the Z5ii would be ideal if you can stretch to it. I'm not sure about the Z6 ii sensor but the Z6 iii sensor is still 24mp but is faster for sports and wildlife.

Sunwayfoto quick release plate with QD female. The QD male part was off amazon, non-branded. I don't know which part failed, but had worked reliably until this time being the first failure.

The lens is fine, couple of cosmetic scratches, not on the glass though. The om1, the LCD panel doesn't sit in it's frame anymore so when closed is slightly ajar. Defo not waterproof no more. But other than that, I think the three legged things L bracket took the brunt of it. So I'm still good to go in terms of wildlife unless it rains!

But made me think if the worst happened what would I do. So had quick look at Nikon Z cameras and surprised by the price reduction since I traded the D610 for lighter weight gear.

Another option is the original z7. 45mp and great image quality.
The AF is not fast but for landscape you don’t need it.
It has a rear flip screen but not the flip all ways screen on the latest cameras.

I always use a safety strap with QD system.
I normally have a Black Rapid Sport strap attached to either a Kirk or Hejnar plate. Never had a problem.
But I did have a QD failure with the BR strap and a 3 legged thing L bracket on my OM-1 with 90mm macro attached.
Fortunately I had a safety strap attached so no harm done.
3 LT told me they are bringing out a new QD bracket along with their own strap in the near future.
I suppose it is safest to match strap and plate manufacturers.

Advice sought guys,

Which is the better lens and why ? Any real word pictures taken with both to show quality ? Will be paired with my ZF.

Nikon 24-120mm f/4 G ED VR AF-S Zoom

and the

Nikon NIKKOR Z 24-120mm f/4 S Lens

Also, anyone using or used the

Nikon NIKKOR Z 85mm f/1.2 S Lens

Opinions please.
FWIW I own the 85/1.2 and in my opinion the 50/1.2 and 85/1.2 are the best lenses Nikon has ever made. The images with them just have something special. The cream machine used to be my favorite lens ever. The 85/1.2 knocked it off that spot.

However. The 1.2 lenses are big and heavy. This isn’t a problem in use, but is a problem wanting to keep them in your bag. It would also be an issue on the Zf for me. It is too heavy to work with that body. I only use the 1.2’s with my Z8 and the small SE primes with my Zf.

I’d love to try the 35/1,2 but haven’t had the chance.
