Nikon Z* mirrorless

Interesting. My Elinchrom flash heads will not sync. If I don't keep the shutter speed to a max of 1/200 I get banding on the image.
D850 by comparison will sync at any speed using the same trigger.
Have you changed the e1 setting to AutoFP (1/250)*

Morning all. I hope all is well. I am just back from two weeks in Morocco and then had a no fault car accident yesterday, that totalled my car.

Anyway, whilst away I took my OM1 and some lenses but then thought about perhaps replacing my M43rds (bar the macro set up) with a Z6iii to compliment my Z8.

I would still have an OM1 and 90 mm macro but then could use the Z6 iii and 24-120 as my travel set up (and back up for my Z8).

What do you think?
I’m kinda answering a different question to what you asked, but I have the 24-120 and the 24-200. The 24-120 is on my camera probably 95% of the time except when I’m on my travels, and that’s when the 24-200 is on it. Yes it’s a luxury to have both but the extra range of the 24-200 and its size / weight are worth it.
I wouldn’t rule out the 24-120 as a travel lens, it’s very versatile and if the nth degree of image quality is important then it’s the better lens, but for the kind of photography I do when I’m away, I personally prefer the 24-200.

Press menu, go to the "custom settings menu", then scroll down to "d Shooting/display" the d9 setting is where you have the options.
Its called view mode(photo Lv) and when you go into it there's the option of "Show effects of settings" and "adjust for ease of viewing" it this second option that allows you to see without the settings effecting the EVF or back LCD screen.
I have it set in my quick "i menu" for the ability to quickly change it.

Hey Wilt.
I'm not sure I read this right, or if these settings are not what I'm looking for. I followed going to the D9 setting, but under "photo lv mode", I only have on or off, and no "adjust for ease of viewing."

I'm looking to find where I can remove all of the clutter on the screen. There's so much information, which is great, but I can barely see the screen when looking at the edges of my image. Is there a way you can turn off all that, so I am just looking at the image and nothing else?

I've got the Z7 with the latest firmware in it.

Also, quick acknowledgement to everyone who gave me suggestions for the telephoto lens. In the end I went the other way, and tomorrow I have arriving the AF-S 16-35mm f4 VR and also the FTZ II adaptor. I read that this lens is compatible with the FTZ and both lens and adaptor are weather sealed. All in, came to circa £500. I know for about £350 more I could get a used Z 14-24mm, but thats £350 towards something else!

I wanted the FTZ adaptor as I wanna get a 85mm, and although Nikon sells a Nikon Z 85mm, the prices are silly money, and using an old F series lens is much more cost effective.

The older models have different menus, some are missing features.
In the Z7 menu if memory serves me right I think it's d8 and called "apply settings to live view". When "on" this shows the changes you make to aperture/ISO/Shutter. When "off" this makes the screen/evf adjust to the light you are shooting in so you can see to focus and shoot, when using flash.

Found this:-
On is for natural light and shows any adjustment you make
Off is for use with flash.

How different did you find the bird specific mode vs the regular animals mode (which I think still recognised birds anyway if I remember correctly) ?

Good question, however, I don't think I can answer that. I usually leave AF in auto. But went into Bird to see how it worked. If I remember, I will do a compare and contrast when I'm out next. I don't usually shoot wildlife, so please don't hold your breath! Hopefully, you'll get there first?

The different subject recognition modes are exclusionary. I.e. in bird more it is not any better at detecting birds, but it will not focus on a human. However, if it doesn't find anything it recognizes it will revert back to the basic focus mode selected; e.g. 3D.

The camera is either using subject recognition/tracking, or it is using the basic focus mode selected; it cannot do both at the same time. When subject recognition is active (subject found) the AF area selected functions as the "priority area."

It's a flash sync issue.....
Yes; the normal flash sync issue of too high a SS results in a dark band at the end of the exposure (bottom of the image with Z bodies). But for some reason the electronic shutter seems more prone to delayed firing of the flash and a black bar at the beginning of the exposure (top of image).

Question guys,

Do the AF-S NIKKOR lenses still stack up on today’s mirrorless bodies ?

Obviously a cheaper option ( I can get the 50mm + 85mm f1.8’s & the 24-120mm f4 ) for the price of Z mount 24-120 f4 S.

I’m thinking about trading my Sony a7riv & a7iv for the Z8 & Z6iii.

I want to get into portraiture more.

Your thoughts and opinions would be welcome.

I am still using my afs lenses on my z6ii and dont see any issues with them.

How about the Z mount 24-200. ?
I would definitely take a look at the z24-200mm I have one and I was impressed with it right away .or I recently go az28-400 and once again so far pretty good results or a lens coat could be the answer for water resistance on a none weather sealed lens I’ve used clingfilm or polythene bag with a few elastic bands

New Nikon Zr video orientated camera anyone ?

Can I ask some advice please.

I was looking at options for lenses circa 70-200mm. In the Z mount there are a few options, but all are really pricey and also f2.8 which I don't need.

I'm looking for extra reach, I have the Z 24-120mm already which is an F4 lens and also its weatherproofed. I'm mainly a landscape photographer so I shoot in all weather conditions.

I did see in the F mount there was a Nikon 70-200mm f4 (nikon 70-200mm f4 g af-s ed vr) which looked ideal as it was small and light, but when I read up, it isn't weather sealed. I read the f2.8 is weather sealed though. The f4 weighs 850g, the f2.8 1470g

There also is an 80-200mm AF-S lens which is 1580g

Is there a F4 telephoto lens that is weather sealed and compatible with the Z7 with the FTZ adaptor or do I have to get the heavier f2.8 if I want all weather shooting?

Thanks.
I agree with the others suggesting the 24-200. I have had mine for a couple of years now and it has been a great addition to my kit. Very versatile, lightweight and image quality is very good considering it isn't an S lens. Nigel Danson uses the 24-200 quite a lot too, which shows that even pros rate it.

I had a 24-200 for a while as I wanted a longer length option, but didn’t find it particularly great at the longer end. It appears my copy definitely lost contrast, quite a bit over 150mm.

In the end I already had the 24-120, so sticking with that for the time being. I’d love a sensibly priced Z 70-200 f4, but the chances of that aren’t great!

I felt the same with my copy of the 24-200. For me, it just didn't cut the mustard.

I don't know much about video cameras but the product announcements seem very positive and impressed with what the camera offers at a comparatively low price point.

I recently got a Z50II, it's a great little camera with one major draw back. It's too small.
I thought a base plate or L bracket would cure that, but unfortunately it's not enough.
Apart from having to carve something out of hardwood to screw to the bottom, does anyone else have an idea how to increase the height of the Z50II for my large hands?

You could find someone that has a 3D printer and could make you one.

Possibly of limited interest but the new Nikon ZR combines the memory bank system found on Nikon's professional bodies with the user mode system found in the pro-am bodies. It is still called user modes, but for each user mode you can choose whether it works like a traditional "static" user mode, or works like a "dynamic" memory bank

This is something Olympus already do, and although I prefer the memory bank system this option would be really useful

I would be nice if they could add this to existing Nikon bodies with a firmware update, but if not, I seriously hope this becomes the standard for all new Nikon bodies.
