You can fit an F-mount lens to a Z-mount body via the FTZ adapter but you can't mount a Z-mount to an F-mount body, it's not physically possible since the Z-mount lenses sit much closer to the sensor than an F-mount lens.
 
No. First you would need an adapter as the Nikon Z bayonet throat diameter is much larger than F mount. However, even i such an adapter existed it still would work as the flange distance (i.e. the distance between the rear point of the lens and the sensor plane) is much shorter on Z mount than it is on F mount, so the lens wouldn't be able to focus.
 
They added Cycle AF *and* Recall Shooting Functions!! They also added Bird specific AF. Incredible update.

What do you use? Release, Focus+Release or Focus?
I am finding while using the Release a lot of images are just not in focus so just wondering what others are finding.

I have it set to Release. Very frustrating when the shutter doesn't fire because of a lack of focus confirmation. I just bin any OOF images (although the keeper rate with the Z8 is massively better than any other Nikon I've owned)

I have the pair of 24-120mm f4 lenses.
The Z version I use on my Z7/8/9 and the F mount on my D810/850.
Cant say I have seen much difference but I shoot less and less with the D cameras.

I used the 24-120 G lens on my D810 probably 90% of the time, until I sold both and went to the Z system. I now use the Z lens on a Z7ii probably 90% of the time. I never had both at the same time so can’t make a side by side comparison, but if things like sharpness are important then I’d say subjectively the Z is superior. For me, the most important factor is that the Z is lighter and more compact and but it’s still quite a long lens.
Cameralabs have a comparison between the Z mount and F mount on an FTZ, might be worth checking out.

This.....

I've owned my G since it was introduced in 2011, and I think I am lucky since I think I got a very good copy as it works superbly on my D850. To me D850 and 24-1204G is a perfect match.

Saying that. my Z24-120 on the Z8 works superbly although I have not tried my other lenses (16-35, 24-120G, 70-200VR2) on the camera

So I can't really advise, sorry.
 
I’ve found with a lot of lenses that it’s very hard to recognise noticeable differences unless images are placed side by side, and pixel peeping. Some improvement relating to CA, speed and accuracy for sure. There’s definitely a lot of money to be saved by using older gear.

That's killed my slight interest in updating my 70-200 to a Z mount one (y) (y)
 
LCE currently has a 24-120 G at £1249, while the Nikon Z version is currently £849.. just madness.
 
I have had this male Sparrowhawk visiting my garden over the last 6 weeks or so, but usually later in the evening when the light is going. On this occasion it visited at approximately 5.54pm when I was watching Pointless and the wife spotted it for me.

Below are my three favourites of the bird.

Z8, 400mm f4.5 lens and 1.4TC.

Can I ask some advice please.

I was looking at options for lenses circa 70-200mm. In the Z mount there are a few options, but all are really pricey and also f2.8 which I don't need.

I'm looking for extra reach, I have the Z 24-120mm already which is an F4 lens and also its weatherproofed. I'm mainly a landscape photographer so I shoot in all weather conditions.

I did see in the F mount there was a Nikon 70-200mm f4 (nikon 70-200mm f4 g af-s ed vr) which looked ideal as it was small and light, but when I read up, it isn't weather sealed. I read the f2.8 is weather sealed though. The f4 weighs 850g, the f2.8 1470g

There also is an 80-200mm AF-S lens which is 1580g

Is there a F4 telephoto lens that is weather sealed and compatible with the Z7 with the FTZ adaptor or do I have to get the heavier f2.8 if I want all weather shooting?

How about the Z mount 24-200. ?
 
Thanks both. I'll do some research on that lens. I originally disregarded it as I remember back in the day that big superzoom lenses were not good.

When I swapped over from Pentax, I had a 60-250mm f4. I used to use that wide open at times to add depth to the image, and that lens is a f6.3 which wouldn't give me much limited dof.

Also I think I'm probably looking for reasons against it as I have the 24-120, and in theory I'm buying a lens which is "the same" but with more reach.

I know I'm fussy!
 
I have a 70-180 f/2.8 z and really like it. So much smaller than the 70-200 f/2.8, no need for an FTZ, and apparently it’s also weather sealed. Might suit you needs if you don’t desperately need the 180-200mm range?

Are you set on a Nikon lens? There are a couple of Tamron lenses in Z mount that may be of interest - the 70-300 might fit the bill? Looks like it has weather sealing to some degree

Morning all. I hope all is well. I am just back from two weeks in Morocco and then had a no fault car accident yesterday, that totalled my car.

Anyway, whilst away I took my OM1 and some lenses but then thought about perhaps replacing my M43rds (bar the macro set up) with a Z6iii to compliment my Z8.

I would still have an OM1 and 90 mm macro but then could use the Z6 iii and 24-120 as my travel set up (and back up for my Z8).

What do you think?
 
My go to travel lens is the 24-120. In the past attached to a Z7.
Nowadays I use the Z5 ii as I have a Z8 so don't need the sports/video capabilities of a z6 iii.
Undoubtedly the z6 iii is a more featured camera than the Z5ii, but I bought it for the smaller size, lighter weight and £800 price difference (at launch).

Usually I also take my 14-30 F4 which gives a great travel combination with the 24120.
 
I am just thinking the Z body will give a much better image than the OM1. In the market in Morocco where you have to up the ISO somewhat the OM1 didn't really hit the mark for me. It is great in the light but I am thinking of switching for the benefit of better ISO.
 
D90 was my first ever DSLR....
Likewise here.
Back in the day I was actually looking for a used Nikon D40.
Most of the sellers indicated that they were selling their D40s to upgrade to a Nikon D90.
So I managed to find on line, a like new D90 advertised, which I bought and was well pleased with.
My niece now has the D90, I have upgraded to a Z 6ii
 
Really interesting points about the pricing and future of mirrorless. As a wedding photographer who made the switch from DSLR to mirrorless a couple years ago, I can definitely relate to the cost concerns - those new Z lenses do feel painfully expensive at first!

What I found though is that the workflow benefits for wedding work have been totally worth it. Being able to see exactly what the sensor sees in the EVF has saved me so many shots where I'd normally have to chimp the LCD to check exposure. During those fast-paced ceremony moments, that's been a game-changer.

I totally get what you mean about ergonomics though. The first few weddings with my Z9 felt weird in my hands after years with the D850. But honestly, after a couple of shoots, I got used to it and now I actually prefer the smaller form factor when I'm carrying two bodies all day.

The manual focus improvement you mentioned is spot on too. I do a lot of detail shots with vintage lenses and the focus peaking has made that so much more reliable than trying to focus through the optical viewfinder on my old DSLR.

Curious what others think about the long-term reliability though - that's still my biggest concern when I've got back-to-back wedding weekends!
 
As for reliability, they're used day in and day out by professional photographers. For all aspects of photography. The Z9 being the pinnacle of Nikons cameras. I shoot with a Z8, but my friend uses a Z9 in all weathers, shooting everything and he's never encountered a problem. The Z9 is likely to be superceeded next year, so it's been around for sometime and I've heard zero problems about their reliability.

As a wedding tog, have you tried HSS flash with the Z9?

I have Godox X1T(N) and AS600 units and these work with my Z8/9 in HSS mode.

Interesting. My Elinchrom flash heads will not sync. If I don't keep the shutter speed to a max of 1/200 I get banding on the image.
D850 by comparison will sync at any speed using the same trigger.
