Nikon Z* mirrorless

I got the plena before Christmas and whilst I love it, I can’t really justify it. Which is a shame because it is beautiful.
It looks great and something I've looked at.

Not sure I can stretch that far so probably end up with the Viltrox 135 lab.

I hate to be that guy, but can I ask a couple of noob questions about the ZF please?

It's dumb personal preference stuff, but having been Fuji since the XT-1 I'm really fancying a change... oddly, mostly in colours... oh, and tracking focus obviously!
I have been doing a lot of reading around, but obviously it's hard to cut through the vested interests, the fanboys and the cognitive dissonance sometimes.

ISO... from what I understand, since update 2.0 it's been possible to have an auto ISO range set, then simply override that by selecting a solid value on the dial. Can anyone confirm that is the case? I do that a fair bit on the Fuji, and find it quite handy.

Similarly, if I'm in aperture priority, then I select a firm value on the shutter speed dial, will that simply override aperture priority, leaving the aperture where it is, and effectively become manual mode? Again, this is something I've always found useful, and would be nice to have.

Given the lack of joystick I suspect my primary focus method would be Continuous with 3d tracking to focus and recompose. Does this work well?

Finally, I'm out and about with the kids a lot, and decent eye AF would be useful... Is this ok, or is it lens dependent? To start with I plan to go with the two lightweights, the 28 and the 40, which I expect to be a little behind the 18 and 33 1.4 lenses I mostly use on the Fuji, but from what I've seen the images seem quite pleasing to me.

Thanks for any help you can offer.

Nick, I use both Nikon (since 1973) and Fuji X cameras (since 2012) and can say from my perspective the ZF is probably as close to a Fuji XT4/5 as you can get.
Except that the Nikon AF is probably one or two steps ahead of the Fuji versions. Every new version of the XT range I hope for equivalence but that is always dashed! The Nikon AF is much surer and faster. My Z8 and Z9 are probably a very slight bit faster than my Zf. Lens wise the Nikons are similar IQ to Fuji ones.
I can say the Zf with its B&W mode makes for a good Fuji Acros+G mode. I do like the Fuji film sims but you can get the same with Nikon Picture Control files.

My recommendation would be to use AutoISO only if you can keep an eye on parameters. Personally I use fixed ISO with Aperture priority mode and use EV Compensation to adjust the EVF look to match my desired image output, or I shoot full Manual exposure mode.

I find using the Q button on the Fuji is very similar to the i button in Nikons.
I do find that the Fuji offers a little more customisation to the Fn buttons than in the Nikon Zf. But that is only my perspective from what I want on fn button customisations.

Depends if you want the best/unlock the full potential? Do you need really fast cards? Are your current ones holding you back?
I use Delkin Black CFexpress cards, because at the time they got great reviews and didn't hold the camera back at all.
Things have changed since then and there's now many manufacturers producing great cards.
I always looked for cards that had a "sustained" 1400MB/s write speed or higher, note the sustained part, as some can peak at or above 1400MB/s but drop off quickly.

The 128 GB card is:

Speeds That Surpass Other Cards High-speed consistent recording and enhanced workflow efficiency far beyond existing SanDisk cards are the result of read speeds of up to 1700MB/s and 1400MB/s write speeds (Amazon).

The 64 GB is slower at 1500 and 800

Never had issues with them but like to buy one or two more now I'm using the Z8. I get a fair chunk of Amazon vouchers through the year, so buy this sort of thing with those.

There's no point buying a card that is faster than your camera can write

not sure if this is the same for all brands but I think Leica recommend cards that are appropriate for their cameras, ( don't ask me as to were I read this - I can't remember)

What's are users thoughts on the Z 24-70mm f2.8 lens?...

I currently have the Tamron G2 28-75mm f2.8 and I'm missing 24mm so I seem to be using my Sigma ART 24-35mm f2 more than the Tamron. I had the 24-120mm when I bought my Z8 a few years ago so not interested in one of them again.

I have the 70-200mm f2.8 and I'm thinking of going for the holy trinity in the near future hopefully. Am I mad or are the other wider angle lenses as good as the 70-200mm?

It's a fantastic lens and was almost a permanent fixture on my Z cameras, but I now prefer the 24-120 f/4 because of it's slightly longer reach and weighing less, unless I need the f/2.8.

I pondered this for a long time for landscape/general use. In the end I splashed out on the Z 14-24 2.8 and Tamron 28-75 2.8 G2 which covers this range really well for my purposes (and the f2.8 is useful at times over f4). I couldn't justify the Z 24-70 2.8 for the amount I use that focal range

Maybe add a Z 17-28 f2.8 or 14-30 f4 if you want a native lens that's wider?

I have a new (June) Z6 III. When I go out, the rear screen does not work. When I get home to check, it is fine. Am I doing something stupid, or is there an error with the camera.

TIA

I have no idea if this is the same for you, but I have one specific hat with a reflective trim around the brim. Anytime I wear it, it seems to interfere with the sensor by the viewfinder (I assume making it think that my eye is to the viewfinder, when it isn’t, hence turning the screen off when I’m trying to review photos.

Got quite close to returning my original z6 until I realised it was a hat problem :ROFLMAO:

Yeah more than likely connected with the setup of the viewfinder.

Have a read here.

I am starting to wonder if it was a low battery problem. Today, no problems at all.

@chris123 I had the same thoughts about something getting at the sensor.

Do you ever get the feeling you are going mad?!

Try removing the viewfinder rubbber and cleaning the viewfinder. I had problems with my new Z5ii and this solved it.
These new sensors are very sensitive.
I assume you are usung automatic display switch?

Black clothing or sunglasses will affect it.

So tell us @chris321 How do you rate your Z6 III compared to your previous ?

@Peter123 One thousand apologies, I was meaning Chris of course.

edit; I have the Z6ii

Z9 download over USB.

Gone away on holiday and forgot my card reader.

Plugged in via USB and the Z9 appears on the computer for a second, then live view comes on camera, then flashes off, appears on the computer and rinse repeat.

What am I doing wrong?!?

I get this on the screen when it briefly appears on the computer, then flashes back to live view

Are you on windows or Mac? When I had to do this recently I was expecting the camera to show up as a storage device, which it didn’t. I had to open up a different inbuilt app (possibly image capture but I can’t quite remember) which then saw the camera and allowed me to copy across.

Windows.

The Z9 appears and if I click quickly I can access the memory cards, but then disconnects.

Wanted to check I’m not doing anything wrong but trying a different USB C cable.

Have NX Studio, the camera doesn’t stay connected long enough for NX to read it.

Tried the same cable with an iPad connected to the PC and that works fine.

Very odd. Think I will try and find a card reader somewhere!

I really like it! The better AF with smarter subject tracker etc is a big improvement.

Being honest I did expect it to revolutionise my photography more - I thought every shot I took would be national-geographic grade, competition-winning quality, but turns out even a vastly improved AF system isn’t a substitute for shoddy technique :ROFLMAO: .

But overall really happy with the upgrade.

Hope you guys can help, I have an issue with my Z7 and Z 24-120mm

Just got back from holiday and I'm putting the images onto the PC and Lightroom to edit them.

All the images are under exposed from between 1 to 2 stops. I was shooting in Av most of the time, and then in full manual, but when doing so, I used the guage to the right of screen that says if the image is correctly exposed. I thought it could be user error but seeing as this is the same when shooting in aperture priority and its across the board, I'm guessing its not me.

I did read that Active D-Lighting can make an image under expose online if its turned on, mine was set to normal in the settings so I've now set this to off to see if that makes a difference. I've also read that there is an option B4 to fine tune optimal exposure as well, so I can force the camera to shoot 'over'

I'm wondering if this is normal and if anyone else has had this issue?

Thanks for the reply. I may revisit the 24-120mm f4.

Thanks for the reply. I have decided to buy the 14-24mm first and see how I get on.

There's an updated Tamron 16-30mm f2.8 due to be released at the end of this month as I believe Tamron make the Nikon 17-28mm lens.
