Nikon Z* mirrorless

I think with the Zf, it depends a bit on how you hold and carry the bigger lenses. I'm using the 100-400 with the Zf and no grip perfectly comfortably providing you use a neck strap and hold the lens in the left hand. The 70-200 vr2 including the FTZ is slightly longer and heavier (without it, it is slightly smaller) but there's not much in it. Still, it's possible the balance may feel different of course. I guess the only way is to try it out if possible.

Do Nikon have a 'Sony GM' equivalent lens range or are their Z lenses all one class?
I've worked out DX/FX and VR, AF-S and N lens designations,
Im researching their F series as well, if there are some old F series MF glass I should add to a wishlist, please let me know :)
Im covered for now with my Zeiss ZM and old K series Pentax lenses, I could fill in the gaps with Voigts, but Id prefer Nikon branded.
If I buy MF F series glass I guess I could use a dumb adapter?

Yes they have lenses designated S (I guess Superior) and ordinary lenses.

time to buy a new lens??
Did that a couple of days ago. In the manner to which you have become accustomed, I purchased, from Fleabay at a ridiculously low price, my 3rd 14-30. And it’s in immaculate condition!. Too wet and windy to go out today though, so I tidied the computer room (sort of).

Had a wander round town yesterday between the rain. Zfc, Nikkor 24mm f1.7 DX

Settle Steps by Stephen Lee, on Flickr

With a little help from Santa and a big help from Tina at panamoz - finally back from Sony to Nikon with a z8, 180-600 and 105 macro… now just staring at dhl tracking numbers.
Excited to be back on the dark side (is that still a thing?)

Looking at the 17-30 to complete the kit, wondered any views on the 30mm end and maybe in crop mode to double as a walk around - or add the 40mm f2?

Just double checking I’ve done my homework correctly that this memory card is about the cheapest that doesn’t limit the performance on the z8 in anyway?

Lexar Professional SILVER Series 512GB CFexpress Card, Type B CFe Card up to 1750MB/s Read, CF Card Adopt PCIe Gen3x2, CF Memory Card Compatible with DSLR, Backward with XQD Camera (LCXEXSL512G-RNENG)

As seems quite ‘cheap’ on Amazon.

I use a Delkin Black 325GB Gen3. It releases the full potential of the Z8/Z9, I'm sure others will as well, but I read that the sustained write has to be 1400MB/s.
Plenty say 1700MB/s etc, but it's the sustained write that's the important number. You normally have to go hunting to find this figure, especially on cards that don't meet it.

I'm wary of making recommendations on cards in case people have issues with them however that's the card I've used in my Z8 and had no issues with it, seems to keep up at 20fps although I've not tried 8K video with it.

Bit of a strange question, but anyone with a Z6 III can look into something for me. Since owning the Z6 III I’ve been disappointed with the quality of the EVF (which is one of the camera’s main selling point's). My version looks decidedly lower resolution with more jaggies visible than on my Z8 or Z9 which actually have lower resolution EVF’s. In fact I’ve checked it against my Olympus OM-1 body (which also has a 5mp EVF), and the one on the OM-1 looks way more detailed.

For anyone that’s used or witnessed Sony’s 9mp viewfinders (A7RV, A1 etc) it looks similar as when you half press the shutter button to focus and those EVF’s go into a much lower resolution mode while focussing.

Do I just have a bad version or have a setting wrong ?

I’ve just acquired the Z6iii. Checked it today V my Olympus OM-1. To my ageing eyes they look very similar. Both cameras have default EVF settings.

Thanks Trevor. I'll do a full reset tonight and see how that goes. If not I'll have to contact Panamoz and see what they say.

A nothing too exciting snap... rushing out to get a shot with brand new z8 and 105 macro... ( it kinda not bad at landscapes too)

As much as I enjoyed using Sony for 4 years, I really did miss the feel of a Nikon full size camera in my hands... the Z8 is soooo nice to hold after the Sonys. I know it's a personal thing, but it can make such a huge difference... with the light as a feather 105, can't wait to get out properly.

Hi, On my Z8 I saved the camera setup to memory cards so after shooting I just revert camera back to a starting point, I have recently also added a picture profile that shows a kind of zebra pattern for white & black points but when I try to alter the camera starting point it does not pick up the profile and reverts back to the original auto profile, cannot see where I am going wrong.
Thanks.

Anyone using the Viltrox 20mm f2.8 ?

Looking for a lightweight wide option for cityscapes when travelling and wondered how it performed. I’ve read the reviews but always like to hear first hand.

Thank you

I have that lens and although I’ve not used it extensively, i have been most impressed. If you do get one, it’s important to check the firmware version and update.

Thank you for the feedback, I am tempted especially with its low price and its intended use on a 24Mpx body.

Can anyone on here that owns a z 50mm 1.8 s confirm the lens hood really has a diameter of 12.1cm and I’m not just misreading every site ? I know it’s not a nifty fifty but that seems huge - looks like I’m gonna need a bigger bag!

Might be wrong think it is about 85-87 mm

well the lens says its 86.5mm diameter, and the hood (hb-90) says 12.1cm x 11.6cm, but not sure I believe them. at least im hoping its not.

Does anyone in here shoot both Sony and Nikon?
What do you do with lenses, do you buy Sony and adapt or buy native Z mount?

Im asking as Im going to go for a Zf in indigo blue, I might have to wait for the next sale as it is out of stock right now, Im intending for it to be my MF camera for when I have "me" time
My A7r2 will remain as my AF and wife friendly solution.
My rx100VA will still be my everyday.
The Zf is for my 2025 project, spend a week with every vintage lens I own and finally put a website together to show the pics off.
I really don't get on with Sony Zoom to focus and focus peaking, maybe if I had the EVF of the a7rV it might be better, but the various MF assists on the Zf have me intrigued.
Im going to pop into Grays this weekend and see how it handles and go through the MF assist functions with them.

Mine is 87mm in diameter at the widest point and 46mm deep. The 12.1x11.6 is probably the size of the box the replacement hood ships in. I have had to replace a couple of Nikon Z hoods (I have developed an annoying habit of loosing them) and they seems to ship in massive boxes.

Thanks - that makes more sense, they must mean the lens is 86.5 with the hood

Would save doubling up on lenses.

I went from Nikon F-mount to Sony FE-mount and then onto a Z8 so I have the Megadap adapter. Functionally it seems to work well and I've not noticed any difference to a native lens although I've not really tried it in anger with something tougher. A couple of issues have put me off using it more, the first is that the adapter sits tight against the camera and lens which I've seen some people complaining about damaging their devices. The second is that I use Photolab to process my images and it seems to get completely confused about the Sony lenses on the Nikon mount, when I import photos using the Sony 85mm lens the software prompts me to confirm which 85mm lens I'm using offering a range of possible Nikon lenses. There's perhaps a way around it but I've not been able to find one.

So far I'm using the Sony lenses as a stopgap at the moment although I'd like to give the Sigma 100-400mm a proper run on the Z8 and see how it works since I've had great results with that on the A9 and I don't want to fork out for the Nikon version.

Recently back from snowy Yorkshire where I had lots of fun trying to both enter and leave the country via Manchester airport where the conditions (with about an inch of snow) had caused chaos and the return flight was even cancelled. Actually took the Df on this trip so cheating a bit..... One example below and a few more on Flickr https://flic.kr/s/aHBqjBY4eS
