Nikon Z* mirrorless

Made the mistake of having a fondle of the Z8 yesterday.... Now I 'think' I want one :ROFLMAO:
I was surprised how easily it slips into the hands, there was me thinking the extra weight etc would be really telling, quite the opposite actually.
Think it maybe time to re-align some of my gear!

Has anybody moved from a Zf to a Z8 (and not moved back or wish they hadn't bothered)? I'm toying with the idea, for no good reason other than I have a good trade in price for my Zf and the cash back brings the Z8 into reach for me. Photography-wise, I'm no pro, just a bit of all sorts really (from macro, to family shots, to days out, to landscape etc etc.).

Well - it's Black Friday season! Today my two new lenses arrived and I saved £400 and free 3 year warranty on both! Nikon Z 85mm F/1.8 S and 20mm F/1.8 S.Now - what to spend that £400 I "saved" on - Haha!

I really like the 85mm f.18, though I don't use it nearly enough at the mo.

I dont understand why the Z lenses are so big.
My 20mm f2.8 AF is absolutely tiny compared to the 20mm f1.8 Z, probably around 1/3 the size.

I think they have a wider throat than other cameras. And of course an f1.8 needs bigger glass than an f2.8, plus extra weather sealing.

Yes indeed but those aside it should be smaller in size.

With the size of the FTZ adapter it should not be beyond the wit of some third party company to put a screwdriver focus motor in so the older AFD and AF lenses could be used in AF mode rather than just MF mode.
I would love to be able to use some of my old AF lenses.

How do you like your ZF @trevorbray ?
Literally just discovered a retro FX Nikon exists lol
I absolutely love it Alan. Particularly with Manual Focus lenses. It’s not for everyone. Get your hands on one. Not advocating buying before trying. It’s a great setup with the kit 40mm f2.

Just getting around to looking a some photos I took on holidays at the beginning of the month at the Devon/Dorset border.

It was the first time I have had a chance to have a play with the recently acquired ZFC Twin lens kit I have bought for travelling to save on lugging the Z8 about.

One of the most surprising things I found was the tracking ability of the camera and kit lenses as shown with the Gull photo below and considering the busy background.

That's exactly what's bothering me. S line is perfect optically, I agree, but size wise - I wish they were half the length and weight.
Look at the new 1.4 series - I wonder if they gonna go 24mm 1.4 or 20/1.4 - and end up smaller than 1.8
70-80mm should be enough for those monsters... old G lens (F mount) were not that big and Z mount.

The Z mount is enormous, only beaten by Fuji G mount.
This has it's advantages (adaption) but draw backs too, like physical lens size to accommodate the mount.
It's also got the smallest flange distance, from lens to sensor, giving very little room for the image projection to cover the sensor.
This for me is the reason why the shorter focal lenses are larger than we have seen on the f-mount.

Looks like they've raised the price.
Maybe they only had a few at that price or it was an error. I purchased it just after midnight.
I hope the order gets fulfilled, as it was even cheaper than the grey importers, which never happens.

is the 85mm the 'Opaque' edition?

Maybe a dehumidifier with the £400.. ;)

Happened to me at Birdfair, fortunately then there were no stocks of the camera, but now it is at a better price and I had a chance to think of how to pair it... get a 24-70/4, 24-120/4 or just use my F-mount glass. These trips to Birdfair have been quite costly - last year they convinced me to get an E rather than G 500/4.

Pick it up tomorrow, thankfully Cambrian (who are having their 'Winter Social' tomorrow) matched Park on the price - Z8 + 24-120, adapter and spare battery,

It’s the ‘straight out of a cold box after being left outside by DPD’ edition. :)

At least it won't have been thrown over the wall by Yodel/Herpes/EVRi edition  . Our local DPD driver has regular demonstrations from me as to how the doorbell works, he can't manage it.

He left this just sat on the step and took a photo of the top of the box close up. Marked my 'Signed for' delivery as received and signed for by me. I was 20 miles away! Reported to both DPD and Wilkinsons Cameras.

Pity. We're lucky enough to have extremely careful, friendly. and polite DPD and Evri drivers - know them both by their first names, stop and chat with them in the street. Yodel less predictable but not bad. Amazon - never get the same guy twice and generally very careless.

Managed a couple hours over the common on my own with the Zf and my new Voigtlander 40mm f1.2
Of course it's the law that it has to be shot wide open.
Nothing prize winning here, but wanted to post something.
Need to be careful of LoCa and other aberrations .

Worthy shots, Trev. But a similar focal length to your old favourite the 35mm?

I actually have the Z 35f1.8. But just love these manual focus lenses on the Zf.

So do I. My eyes say otherwise sometimes. Even with peaking I often get out-of-focus results. Must try harder!

Glad to see you have managed to get out and about with the Voigtlander. Keep using it :)
