Nikon Z* mirrorless

It's a Jackdaw Duncan, wasn't really a "bird shot" as he/she/it was on the house roof above me ........ a family of them in the Street, and they seems to have been here for some years

I suppose I'm used to the size of the D850 when sticking long lens on the camera, it, for me the D850/D810 feels a lot better all around - size, controls, etc.. but I did not really buy the Zf for birds, I just wanted to try a Nikon mirrorless, DSLR style ....... but I have come from the D300/D700/D7100/D800/810/750 and finally the D850

(PS - Jackdaws are 'protected" in England, but not in Scotland or Wales - strange?)

Can you expand on that?

My understanding is that The Wildlife and Countryside Act, which applies in Scotland, England and Wales fully protects Jackdaws. However, here are exceptions to this complete protection for "potential" pest species which under specific circumstances can be controlled/culled/killed under a "General license" . The exact details of general licenses vares sightly by country, but Jackdaw are listed in the General license legislation for all three countries.

Are you referring to the slight differences between countries e.g. In England you can get a license to kill Jackdaws that are directly attacking livestock, but not in Wales.
I realise this is an example of more protection in Wales than England, but it was an easy example for me to cite.

I admit to probably being a bit out of date of any changes in the last five years or so, but a brief check "suggests" things are as I remember it. So it would be useful if you could point me towards where the your info on Jackdaw protection has come from.

You probably know more than me from your posting - but it looks like I'm "out of date" since the law changed in 2021 - they are protected but can be shot in certain circumstances
 
If it's the same size as the Z6II it will be great, and I will be brassed off, as I just got a Z8 I really wanted something the size of a Z6II. Still I shouldn't really complain :D

I've never owned one, Trevor, but my Step-Dad's brother has had many. He currently has 70+ bikes kicking around his farm in various states of repair. I started riding at 7, exactly 50 years ago. I'm not on a Tenere 700 but I keep eyeing up the latest Royal Enfield Himalayan. As I'm getting older a lighter bike is beginning to appeal to me again.

Rumours say the size will be in between z6ii and Z8.

I did read that a little while back, if true I guess their can't be much in it significantly weight wise, it will be interesting to see the MP as I've read anything between 24 and and 36, I think 36mp is a nice sweet spot, I always liked it on my D810

Do you think that Nikon are squeezing too many models into their range? There seems to be a lot of overlap.

Not much talk of a Z7iii so I guess the Z7 may become redundant, leaving in FF the Z5(?), Zf, Z6iii, Z8 & Z9.

Nikon Rumors still suggesting the Z6iii will be 24MP which I’m guessing is the same as the Zf. I suppose the obvious is the Z5, Z6iii for consumers, Z8 & Z9 for more serious professional use.

Personally I would like to see a Z7iii, I love the 45MP sensor the Z7ii has… but I’ll have to look more seriously at the Z8.

I was actually thinking similar a little while back, but I guess all camera companies do, as let's face it, they are only in it for the profit.

Agreed, particularly with inbuilt stabilisation, most mirrorless seem to have it inbuilt now days, surprised they actually left it out in the Z50
 
I'm currently running the latest firmware version 5.0 on my Z9 but I've just got this niggling thought in my head that the images are not as good as the previous version, backed up by my keeper rate sems lower. Has anyone else come across this and what did you do to rectify it? I do not have the previous version backed up anywhere if that's needed.

At odds with everyone else, I don't think there is a lot of overlap in the existing structure.. I just think we are seeing a period of "settling in".

The two pro models (Z8 and Z9) are ridiculously cheap for what they are, I think the limitations with the Z6 and Z7 forced Nikon to bring these cameras out at very competitive prices: until they sorted out their Pro-Am models (Z6/Z7)

Once we have a Z6III and Z7III, I think we will see a Z8II and a Z9II released at much higher prices, along with much better differentiation of purpose (Z8 mainly for commercial work and the Z9 mainly for sports and wildlife).

If you add a Z5II as an entry level full frame, and a Z7III as a less robust/lower cost alternative to the Z8 and a Z6III as a less robust and lower cost alternative to the Z9 it doesn’t feel like there is much overlap to me.

The Zf is a niche product outside the core structure, which is selling well, and it wouldn't surprise me if we see them building on ths success with a "Zs" model (ie on based on the Nikon S rangefinder cameras).

Of course I have no real idea of what Nikon "will" do, but the current line up (ignoring APS) seems to make sense to me.

Yes, it could be argued that, as Nikon are relative newcomers to mirrorless, they are spreading their shots to discover and settle into more “logical” product streams. But I, like you, wouldn’t like to second-guess the marketeers!
 
Picked up a Sigma 24-35mm f2 Art lens last week off the bay. I have had two of these lenses in the past and used on my D750 & D810. Had a little play yesterday at Mumbles along with using the FTZ for the first time. Need more practise.

@trevorbray IIRC and if I'm correct you now have a Z8...If so have you tried your Voigtlander 50mm f2 APO Lanther on the Z8. How did you find the results and ease of using the lens if you have had a chance to try.?

Parted company with the Z8. Loved the performance but didn’t like using it. Hadn’t tried any manual focus lenses on it.
Yes I watched plenty reviews on it, but not tried one until it arrived. Keep wondering if I should have given it more of a go.

If you don't mind me asking, why didn't you like using it if you loved the performance, was it the ergonomics, I'm more than a bit intrigued.

I'm getting the popcorn ready for this, I must have whatsapp'd him about 200 times telling him to man up and get on with it.........ok maybe not quite 200 :cool:
