Found it, set the custom function on joystick to reset to the centre. Thank you

Updates aren't as good as Panamoz, but apart from that my experience was very good.

FWIW Panama give a 3 year warranty, never had to use it as everything I bought from them has been spot on, but they do get high praise on here.
Don't know if Tina is still there, she is great to deal with, and you can ask for a price match if they are not the cheapest.

I’ve just had a look at the review. If I’m honest it’s about where I thought it would be compared to the f2.8 lens range as it’s not really in th3 same league as those lenses. I wouldn’t really call the 400mm f4.5 an exotic lens as the 400mm f2.8 version is £13.5k whilst the 400mm f4.5 is £3k. It’s hard to compare it to the 70-200 f2.8 as that is a very different lens built for very different things. The 400mm f2.8 would be their equivalent range

There are definitely design compromises made to get the 400mm f4.5 down to just over 1.2kg and £3k price tag. Sharpness of course takes a hit but generally it’s good performance all things considered.

Cotswolds also offer 3 year warranty however I’ve never had to make a warranty claim via either. I have returned a faulty item to both and both dealt with it admirably.

I could well be wrong but I don’t think Tina is a real person, all replies seem to come from “Tina”.
 
Anyone here used Nikon AF Nikkor 24mm f/2.8 D on Z body?
If not Z, then on any Nikon body - how is it?
Would it be worth getting it on Zf with FTZ adapter? Just to have 24mm lens?

What are all other 24mm lens options for Z body? Apart from Z lens...
AF, doesn't have to be bright as 1.4 or 1.8. Maybe lets see range 20-24mm.
I was after that 24/2.8D but just noticed that it won't auto focus with FTZ, is that correct?

I was after ideally smallish 24mm lens. Looks like if I was going to get G lens, add FTZ, I would essentially get size and weight of S line 24/1.8 anyway.
Price wise same I guess...
That new Viltrox 20mm 2.8 Z looks promising...

After an extended period away from Nikon I’ve decided I’d like to return and I have my eyes set on a z9. I have in the meantime acquired a D850 which I'm enjoying immensely for my wildlife photography. If there's anybody on the forum looking for swapsies or moving to Sony - I have my 135mm which is currently in classified and shortly be shifting my A9 and my 35mm GM

My thinking exactly :). To think I once had a 50mm f/1,8, 85mm f/1.8 and 20mm f/1,8 z mount. I want them back now

I would but I plan to use the funds from my GM lenses to help my Z9 wants lol. @wookie6262 might still have one mind you - he had the Z9 but remained in the Sony camp and I think his is on sale in favour of an A1

Just sold all the Nikon kit on ebay including the megadap
 
Just an example of what the Z8 is capable for when it comes to action...I was taking photos of my daughter and caught with a corner of my eye that the crazy furry beast was coming in full throttle. I was in AF-C, 3D tracking and auto subject detection...luckily shutter speed was "fast enough". I just moved the camera as quickly as possible, pressed AF-ON and shutter button almost instantly and came away with the photo below (it's not in any way a good one, but for example purposes it's great).

The photo is not cropped, full frame from the Z8...

This makes the Z8 a very attractive camera for any Nikon shooter.
I still like my Z9 as it has all the bells and whistles but I use my Z7 very infrequently these day as my Zf is my carry around Nikon camera.
 
for anyone contemplating buying a z 600 6.3 PF Nikon UK are selling refurbished at below £4k
 
Sorry if this seems like a bit of a dumb question, but is there anyway to assign to a button the different subject tracking modes (i.e. birds, animals, vehicles etc) on a Z8 / Z9 ? I know I can assign AF modes (so wide small, wide large, 3D etc.) to a button but I've not seen a way (unless it's staring me in the face) to just assign a button to switch quickly between the different subject tracking modes ?

I'm sure I've done this on my Z9 but it's not with me so will check later, think it's 'put into my menu at the top' then 'activate top menu item' on the fn button?

Think you're right there, but I think I've been so spoiled by how well improved all the other lenses are, that the new 400mm being just behind the 500mm PF was just a tad disappointing as the new bar has been set so high!

Yeah, I get it but it's the first Z lens I've had that that isn't a lot better than an equivalent F mount lens (thinking 500mm PF) but it's by far my most used lens!

Z9 is now under £3600 at Panamoz if you don't mind going grey!

I asked this question on another forum (specifically about cycling between bird and animal) and received this answer

"Only possible with setting recall shooting functions hold to say animal, assign to button. That will override bird if normal mode and revert back to animal when pressed again. I have rsf set to disable detection, but can also be used in similar way to switch between bird and animal."
 
More info

Just be aware that the camera will revert to the original subject detection mode when :
- if you hit your playback button to review your shots
- if the camera enters standby mode
- if you press the ' i ' button
and maybe in similar other instances
 
OK thanks Peter. With the amazing customizability of the Z8 / Z9, I'm surprised that this was overlooked by Nikon. On my OM-Systems OM-1 I can just hold down a button and rotate the command dial and scroll though all the AI Subject modes, and assumed I could do that on the Nikon's ?

Just checked as I’m home now, method mentioned earlier brings up the subject detect options when I press fn2!

I've picked up an F-mount 14-24mm F2.8 lens which seems in excellent condition but the zoom is quite stiff around the 15-16mm setting whereas the 24-70 and 70-200mm zoom rings rotate smoothly through the range. However I have noticed a few other ebay auctions for the lens do mention stiffness in the zoom although when searching for results on this lens most seem to have a stiff zoom after a fall, there's certainly no sign of any impact damage on this lens though. If this is just typical with the lens I can live with it but if it's not I'd rather send it back as I paid more towards the upper range of second hand values for it.

Also I'd appreciate any recommendations for the AF-C settings to use when capturing images of a dog in motion, I've been trying to get some practice in the morning when he's outside but it's possibly a bit smart for me as I'm struggling to get it to do what I want.

Good to know - That is the main issue I still have with buying from the better grey sellers. Had to send a few Samyangs back to MPB for decentre/ softness- turnaround was within 48 hrs.

Had expected possibly weeks from eg Panamoz etc

My experience with both Panamoz and Cotswolds was a turnaround within a week, both sent the new item before receipt of the old one. But if you're wanting a quick turnaround then buying UK is your only option.
