Nikon Z* mirrorless

@piper , thanks, that's very encouraging to hear.
The eye detection is what I'm interested in. But I doubt any camera would 100% keep up with my kids.

The Sigma 50mm is my fave lens for flower shots on DX but is screw drive do won't AF with the FTZ. I didn't find any 75mm alternative and thought the Nikon 50mm MC would be too wide, and the 105 MC too big and expensive. So the Sigma it is. I used to have the Sigma 150mm macro, but on DX that was too long for me.
There is the Nikon 60:2.8 G afs. It’s very good - I have the screw drive af-d version. Only problem is the short working distance at 1:1 - I prefer a 90/105 or longer.

Received my Z6 in the mail today along with the 24-70 f4. First impressions are it's an insane improvement in capability! I still have a lot to figure out as I haven't spent that much time with it. But right off the bat the pictures are sharp, the high ISO is ludicrous and it all feels like home as I've been shooting Nikon for almost 20 years now. Oh, and the FTZ adapter works a treat. I'll try it with my DX lens, just to see what happens for fun later on.

Congrats, there are loads of vids on YouTube to show you settings, they were great for me as I hate reading manuals. Much better to watch and play with the cam at the same time.

Got my ZF a few days ago and it's very good! Free Smallgrip grip makes all the difference. Poor old Z9 is sat sulking in the corner. I still love you Z9 :D

A bit confusing at first but once I had the 'i' button and 'My Menu' set up how I like it - good to go :)

A few sample shots from the last two days. 40mm F2 SE and the train shot with my old Nikon 85mm F1.8 with FTZII.

Morecambe stone jetty and The Midland Hotel - my default new kit test zone.

I think I know the answer, but there's no harm in asking ... Nikon Z5. Any way to re-assign the Stills/Video switch to treat the Video side to simply be another stills mode, such as is achieved by the U modes? I never have and never will shoot video on this camera, so it seems a waste to having it sitting there idly.

Does the Z5 have the ability to assign "recall settings- hold" to that switch... I don't think my Z9 does, so I rather doubt it, but that would be the only way I can think of.

Not that I’ve seen, but I could have missed it.

I checked my Z9... the reprogram function applies only to software buttons; not hardware switches... IDT you missed anything.
Hey ho. I’ll have a tinker anyway. I know I can shoot stills in tlhe video position, just not sure how many photographic options I can assign.

Today the K&F Concept Leica M to Nikon Z adapter arrived. The Voigtlander Nocton Classic 40mm F/1.4 That I use on the R3M feels great on my ZF!

Hi

Looking at getting a wide zoom that I can use on the d750 and z6ii.

It will only be used sometimes so do not really want to spend too much. Have the 24-70 f2.8 , 70-200 f2.8 both F Mount, and 24-70 f4 z mount.

Which one should I keep an eye for?

Thank you

I really liked the original Sigma 12-24 I had back in the day. I also liked the 10-20 sigma I replaced it with (both used with DX cameras). The newer mkii version of the 12-24 looks to be better all round but I haven't personally tried it. I'm tempted to get one again too.

I still have the original Sigma 12-24mm I think I bought here I've been quite happy with it for the cost as I wouldn't get the use out of the more expensive UWA lenses.

now that takes me back..... I eventually changed the original 12-24 which I used with the D200 and D700 for the 17-35 but the really wide is actually something i miss a bit. I haven't had such a wide since. And the mark 2 is pretty cheap these days second hand........ This forum is a really annoying way of tempting me to waste money!

What Voigtlander lens would you consider best on Nikon Zf? Native and adapted?

I don’t have any voigtlander now but if I was buying one it would be the latest 40mm 1.2 for Nikon z.

Instead of selling the losing money on your nice voigtlander collection why not just use it with megadap adapter on Zf.
You get an the EXIF data plus you keep the portability between e-mount and Z-mount if you decide to swap back and forth

I know it is one of the options, but I dont want to spend more money on adapter, which is expensive, plus introduces single point of failure to cut off all E mount lens when I'm on a trip.
I sold almost everything, just two lens left for sale (40/1.2 Nokton and 35/1.7 Ultron), one E and one M mount.

I don't think I'm going to go back to Sony, unless they come up with retro style body, like Zf :)

I have that lens in Sony mount and it's nice but for Nikon how about the 50mm f1 which seems to be getting very good reviews.

Oh yes, 50/1 looks amazing, great photos, lovely bubbly bokeh which I love, but did you see the price on this thing? That is a price of seriously amazing two other lens.
If I ever going to decide that 50mm is my lenght, I may save money and get one used, if it drops below £1000, my price range for lens ends at around £800.
(I used to say that for camera body its £1200, then last month I bought Zf for £1800, but still, trying to keep my boundaries :D )

I don't think the price is too bad at all, not when you look at the latest top end 50mm f1.2 lenses in the various mirrorless mounts.

Another interesting lens you could look at is the Syoptic 50mm f1.1 which is available in Nikon mount for I think £160 or there abouts. I have this lens in Sony mount and I do like it. It could be an interesting and cheaper alternative to a Voigtlander and it is very nicely built and almost identical in build to my Voigtoander 50mm f2 pro Lanthar APO, but without the engraved markings. This lens is a bit soft at f1.1 but still IMO perfectly useable and I find that pictures respond well to sharpening.

Just in case you could be interested...

Oh, I nearly forgot these...

TTartisan 50mm f2, a FF lens at an amazing price...

And a 35mm...

I like that Pergear 35mm f1.4 but I sent mine back as I didn't believe it was actually f1.4 as the exposure and DoF looked more like f2.2 when compared to my Voigtlanders. I'm waiting for my 2nd copy to arrive.

I've posted pictures taken with these and the Syoptic in both the Sony thread and here...

I also recently got the 100-400 second hand after waiting in vain for nearly 5 years for a Z system standard telephoto. The "temporary" 70-300 AF-P has provided good service in general but is not in the same class. I may keep it as a lightweight option (esp. for the Df where the adaptor isn't needed) -- we'll see how things go. I've yet to do much landscape with it but here is one from today at 400mm I quite like the framing of.

Thanks, Stephen. the sun shone nicely on what a friend of mine calls the "UFO tower" -- one of three communications masts in the area though this one is no longer used. I decided to reprocess to make it both a bit brighter and warmer

Anyone has more photos from 26mm f2.8 lens?

I though I'd try my hand at fireworks last night before realising I hadn't the slightest idea how to really do it. With only private displays, you have no idea when and from where fireworks are going to appear and to say it was a challenge is to put it mildly -- especially as most of the activity was in the first couple of minutes after midnight. The one below was probably the only one I rather liked.

Happy New Year, everyone and best wishes for a successful Nikonising year.

not much wrong with your 24-200 at the wide end it looks like from that photo. Are you planning to keep it now you have the 24-70?

At one point yesterday it was wrapped awaiting DPD, but I thought I’d give it another chance and took it out this afternoon. Still unsure about the clarity at the long end on infinity subjects, but I will give it a stay of execution … for now. It certainly needs clarity boosting in Lightoom. Or maybe a wee bit of contrast.
The other scenario would be to replace it with a 70-300 AF-P plus FTZ. The 24-70 f4 spoils me by its sharpness.

If I wasn't in Germany, I might consider offloading my AF-P 70-300 to you but I fear these days thanks to Brexit, there might be import duties to pay. But possibly if you're in no hurry and I'm not using it -- that remains to be seen --, we could consider it when I'm next in the UK which is likely to be late spring, anyway. The 70-300 works fine with the Z system and is a decent lens for the money. It's certainly not in the 100-400 class but as you're not especially a telephoto person, you'd almost certainly find it adequate and probably better than the 24-200 at the longer end.

That’s certainly a possibility. I do need a longer lens I can rely on for my sail round the Western Isles beginning of May. Time enough to decide on the fate of the 24-200.
