Nikon Z* mirrorless

I imagine it'll be optically better than 400+1.4x and 180-600mm

I also imagine it's better with 1.4x TC than the 180-600 and 400 with 2x

Probably yes to both. But the 400 + 1.4 loses very little image quality.

Someone, somewhere, will soon do a comparison.

Wow, that's expensive.

400 4.5 + 1.4 tc gives you 560mm 6.3. - £1300 cheaper. Same weight as this new 600mm

180-600 gives you 600mm 6.3 - £3200 cheaper but heavier.

Just about to step back into being a Nikon owner after a few years with Sony. Ordered a Z9, 14-30, 24-120 and 100-400 so I can test it out against the A1s and see if I fancy a switch. I have a host of Sony lenses so will get a Megadap etz21 pro. Does anyone have any experience of teh adapter and also where is the best place to buy. Just over 200 quid from ebay and a Japanese seller. Also looking at some CF cards. I don't do video and if I did it would be 4k maximum. I do however shoot sports and need a card that will allow a good number of shots at 20fps. Any recommendations looking at a Sabrent 1Tb and another small card on Amazon

Yes I thought that when I saw the specification and price.
If I was in that game I would go for the 180-600.
I have the 100-400 and that suits me.

Early this week ordered the 180-600 from the Nikon store. According to the UPS tracking, should be with me tomorrow. Excited.

Thanks @trevorbray and @Peter123
I like the idea of the Zf but want a hands on before committing.

I know LCE have a number of instore Nikon days and they said they'd have ZF to try out in these events
Not sure if there is a LCE near you to visit and if they have a nikon day event

for example (this is the one I got pinged about since I know Southampton but I believe other branches have Nikon events too)

I was (kinda still am) tempted so much by the Zf. I loved the Df when I had one of those but it would have meant a complete system change again so I decided to commit to my GFX and bought the new 55mm for it.

The Zf does look a lovely and very capable thing, though.

just wish is was closer to the size of the ZFc with the 45mp sensor. Wouldn't mind if costed a wee bit extra for the extra pixels ;)
(of course I appreciate, I might be in the minority....)

Different needs, I guess. Personally I think that the 24mm FF is a really nice sweet spot for the sensor size. I don't need the resolution (despite owning a 50mp GFX) but I know why some people do and it is nice sometimes having all that detail.

I'm happy with the size (from what I've seen online), but would definitely be a lot more interested if it had the 45MP sensor.... ZFr anyone! :ROFLMAO:

Looks like Clifton Cameras in Glos. are also running an open day... think I may have to wander along as it's not 'that' far from me.

I like to use high res sensors as a digital teleconverter of sorts. it saves a lot on number of lenses I need to buy and/or carry.

For example you can crop with the nikon 85mm f1.2 to 1.5x, you will get equivalent of 128mm f1.8 at 20mp on Z7/8/9. That's more than close enough to the 135mm f1.8.
And 20mp is more than enough for me to print big (or as big as I can foresee myself ever printing)

I don't have a massive problem with the size, I'd put up with it if it had a higher res sensor. I do really like how it look.

I Love my GAS (Z8) :naughty:
I left Nikon because of frustrations with AF on the Z6 and it's inability to focus sometimes, but I see there has been some pretty big improvements in that department with the Z8 and Z9. I've been looking at the results from the 100-400mm z which actually looks like it might be my lens of choice over the 400mm f/4.5 due to it's ability to close-focus better.

I was the same. I wanted to move to mirrorless and got the Z6. Very quickly realised it was a downgrade from the D850 and moved to Sony. Next week I'll get a Z9 and lenses including the 100-400 to see how it compares to my Sony A1s. The 400mm F2.8 TC looks to be about the perfect lens and if the Z9s are as good as the A1s I may make a move

Do keep us posted @wookie6262

I have GAS for a Z8 with future bird AF firmware and a 400mm f/4.5 Z
I know it does not have BIF AF atm but it does have "AUTO" mode and it does track Birds well.
A Bearded Vulture taken with the Tamron 70-200 G2 so not the best lens but it locked onto the bird really well when it was close enough.

Nikons offering 30 day trials of the Z-fc. Got offered the trial via email, maybe demand isn't what was expected.

My friend got it too. I was super excited till I realised it was for ZFc not ZF
I guess they need a few more APS-C lenses before it seems more attractive. May be if the sigma DC DN lenses were available on Z mount it'd be pretty nice.

There's me thinking it was for the new one too. Maybe a little more variation needed in the naming. Doh. I'm off to specsavers.

Although I went the 180-600mm route for the maximum flexibility.
The other factor to consider is the AF speed. I had a 400mm/4.5 for a few months and found it very slow. For static or slow-moving targets it's ok. I would expect the 600 to be faster than the 400 with a TC.

Interesting. I’ve not found the 400/4.5 slow at all

I've tried the 400mm and found it very responsive, certainly faster than my 100-400mm and 180-600mm. Adding the 1.4tc will have a very small impact I'd have thought.

I have also tried the 400mm with the Z8. It's at least as fast as my Sony 200-600mm which isn't slow by any means.
Can't say I noticed much difference with 1.4x TC in good light. Haven't tried it in the evenings or fading light, may be its more challenging then but at that point I probably would want to shoot at f4.5 anyway and forget the TC.

I would really like to try the 800mm PF too and also 400mm PF with 2x TC.

what gear are you shooting with these days?
