Nikon Z* mirrorless

One thing I miss that the Fuji can do, change the size of the focus acquisition box. Tried the little pin point and it’s terrible. Like something between the two.
Only negative so far. Hope to shoot something today.

Z’s offer several AF area modes.
Pinpoint is smallest but slow.
Wide area (S) seems to work well for general use.
 
You may say 'no great shakes as a piece of art' but what a gorgeous memory! (I think every bit as important with a photograph BTW) Like that a lot @trevorbray (y)

If it's a Nikkor, they will work together. Don't know about other makes. Be aware that if you turn the VR off on the lens with it attached to the camera, it seems to turn all the VR off, including the IBIS.

Thanks. Looks like when I bung a Tamron 15-30mm on, it switches the VR off on the camera regardless of whether it's switched on on the lens or not.
That makes sense!
 
Can Z6 owners clarify one thing as there is so many different reports!

What is the FPS when using continuous auto focus? Some places say 12 some say it’s limited to 5.5?

As I understand it to get 12fps the camera locks focus on the first frame and doesn't refocus during the burst.
 
Hey Trevor, Nice image. You mention, return to Full Frame, what from and what to ?. Just interested really as I have the feel to move on from my D700.

I’ve had D700x3, D3,D4 and D750. Moved back from Fuji. Still have D500. Apart from Sigma 150-600 and a 50mm Af-d, the 50 wont work on Z and the long Siggy is my occasional wildlife lens. I need to buy to suit this camera. I’ve just bought a Siggy 35 art. It’s good but I’ll probably let it go in favour of z mount 35 and 50. Loved the Fuji, wanted better low light performance for shooting available light indoors. Got the kit zoom with the camera.

I nearly bought a little used Df. But thought after loving the Fuji I’d stick with mirrorless.
The D4 was wonderful in low light and The Df has the same sensor.

I had a Df and they are so under rated, wish I’d kept it. Image quality is fantastic.

Hey Trev. Do you mean better low light focus performance or better high iso performance?

Sorry, not making myself clear. Better high ISO performance. I found the Fuji really good on focusing in low light, as is the Z. Although I’ve not really pushed it yet.

Hmmm, that’s not ideal. Never mind. Next model should improve.
 
if the rain stops, I might just head into town tomorrow and get a Z6 with 24-70. There will follow a thorough comparison with my Fuji X-Pro2, probably over several months and if I can't see an overall significant system improvement, I'll sell it and probably stay with Fuji forever. The only thing I know for sure is that the Z6 will deal with low light better. I already tried out the Z7 for a couple of hours (the 6 wasn't available) and loved the haptics and viewfinder, silent and instant AF and shutter sound. The light was too crap to judge too much about the IQ

Although it might seem that cost and weight will increase, I don't actually see that for what I'm likely to get that this will be the case with potential additional lenses, once the initial cost has been absorbed, though it will probably mean going for f mount lenses for a while until the new mirrorless offerings have a good range and probably more affordable options. For instance the latest 35mm and 85mm f1.8 are excellent, cheap, small and light - at least on a par with Fuji's 23 and 56/60 -- the 70-200 f4 is cheaper and lighter (and possibly even better) than my Fuji 50-140 and there is the option of the supposedly really good value new AF-P 70-300 (slower of course). For wide zoom, the 18-35 is probably not far behind the 10-24 and again, both cheaper and lighter.

Guess I'm in a fairly similar situation to trevorbray!

Honestly if it wasn’t for the high ISO handling I wouldn’t have switched. I loved my Fuji. If I could afford both I’d have kept it.

I've been with Fuji for over 5 years and like most things about the system but had D200, D700 and briefly D600 in the past and I think overall, the 35mm sensor suits me best with careful lens selection. I can run with both for a few months at least but after that, it will be decision time as even if I could afford two systems (which I can't), I'd probably spend forever deciding which one to take out. However, even if I do leave Fuji as a main system, I can see myself getting one of the X-100 series when cheap-- they're just so gorgeous!
 
OK so this thread has really peaked my interest, but also my curiosity.

As the "Z" series have launched with only 3 native lenses (the 24-70, 35 & 50mm), what are people using to fill the gaps. For instance, if I decided to get the Z6 and sell either the Fuji or Micro-Four Thirds set up to fund, what are people using on the Z cameras for Super wide angle or medium telephoto (in the 70-200/300 range), I assume with the FTZ adaptor ? At present (for my Nikon D500) I only have 2 lenses that would work on the Z's - that being the super 200-500 telephone zoom, and the Nikon 50mm F1.8 AF-S.
 
FTZ adapter works very well. It's hardly any weight but is longer than I would like. All AF-S F lenses work with it. Note it will not autofocus AF-D lenses.
Any F wide angle will be the same as on an F body with the added bonus of IBIS.
Telephoto wise the 75-300 AF-P (FX) works well for me.
A 14-30 F4 S lens is due shortly. Hope it is not too expensive.
Having said all of that my X-T2 with the 90mm F2 attached produces unbeatable images of my granddaughter.
 
Do the Z cameras have a horizontal horizon feature via the viewfinder or only on the back screen ?

Yes, there are four different info displays (one of which is the horizon) which can be cycled for the viewfinder with a press of the DISP button next to the viewfinder.

That’s right. Although I found it a bit intrusive in the EVF.
 
Sorry, what I meant to say was on the Nikon DLSR's (D500, D850 etc), in Liveview mode, you could display a large circular virtual horizon which took up most of the screen. In the optical viewfinder however, you could get a series of dashed bars in the vertical and horizontal that showed you if the camera was level. Do the Z series cameras have that feature or just the larger full circle horizon feature ?

Yes. Today bought a used 35mm from LCE. Story is guy bought into Z system then changed his mind so they accepted it as a trade in.
Arriving tomorrow.
50mm I use less but if price drops a bit I might get one as it is reported to be very sharp.
I need to sell some more F mount to fund though.
Just been looking at some outdoor shots I took of my granddaughter with the 70-300 AF-P. Very sharp and very pleased with them.
Fuji 90mm takes some beating for this though.
I can see me keeping only specialist F lenses long term. e.g. macro.
Expensive process though.
They have a used 24-70 S if anyone is interested.

Yep. I’m going native 35 and 50. I’ll probably sell my Siggy 35 art. Sure to get Siggy 85 non art. I have the kit 24-70. For now that’s it.
 
VERY tempted to pull the trigger on Z6/24-70 kit from Panamoz but I'm still deliberating between this and the A7III. If you current owners were starting out fresh (no lenses to tie you in), would you still pick the Z6 over the A7III?

Also is the 24-70 S really £1k? Puzzled as the Z6 with the lens is only £245 more than the body only. Surely a bargain??

The 90mm Fuji is a sensational lens. I had to sell mine with the 55-200 to fund the 50-140.

that's an extraordinary price. If they are one of the few grey import firms who provide a proper service than I could have been tempted. Living in Germany (where the price is slightly lower than the UK) ruled it out, though.

I haven't tried out the Sony but from what I understand, if you want an emphasis on performance and particularly AF and eye tracking and want mirrorless lenses NOW, then the Sony is a better bet . Nikon if you want better haptics, a better viewfinder, better colours (in the option of most) and 90 F-mount lenses which will function 100% (plus countless others which can be used with MF) until the native range is really takes off, some of which provide much better for money than the Sony equivalents. I personally wouldn't touch Sony but that's simple prejudice.

The Nikon 24-700 normally costs £/€600 when bought with the camera.
