Nikon Z* mirrorless

Just ordered the 14-24, which means it is time to sell my F mount 14-24.

Just a quick question, what Raw compression are z9 owners using, High efficiency, high efficiency* or lossless compressed? Do you note any differences between them, not what’s been said on tinterweb but in real use case for you.

HE* opened with a custom preset in Lightroom. I see no difference between it and lossless compressed (but LR's default camera profiles aren't great). Especially because my ISO is almost always 500 or higher (I usually have the minimum set to 500)... there's nothing extra coming off the sensor for the larger file to contain/retain.

Has anyone here used, 3rd party batteries for their Z5, or batteries from a D750, as I have a few D750/D850 batteries, and I'm wondering about compatibility, but I would like to get an extra one for a Z5. Thanks in advance.

If they’re Nikon batteries they will be fine. 3rd party of copies are a bit hit and miss if they work.

I had a few Hahnel Extreme HLX-EL15HP batteries, they wouldn't work on my Z5, even though they fitted OK, the batteries from my V1 wouldn't work either.

I went to WEX 25th anniversary event in WEX Belfast yesterday, to get my hands on a Z9.
I slapped a 70-200 on it and was amazed that it picked up a polling candidates poster face from inside the shop, across a car park+road over 45m away.
Trying out the 3d tracking I took the subject right out to the edges of the frame and it held it very well.
I used the 50mm f1.2 on it and tried to see if it would miss eye focus at f1.2, but like a champ it never did.
Everything about it impressed me apart from the weight. This was the main reason for the visit, to see if I could deal with the weight.
This has given me a serious dilemma, as the Z9 could handle all the different types of photography I do.
I'm really hoping Nikon will announce something soon, very close to the Z9 but in a Z7II style body before I buckle and try and get a Z9.

Yes Hahnel batteries, are normally good.

They worked perfectly well with my D7000 and V1, with the Z5 I just got a message come up on the rear LCD that this battery is incompatible with this camera.

A phone snap of a page from the programme of the Platinum Jubilee Concert in St George’s Chapel at Windsor Castle. A proud moment on two counts for myself. The most important being my two children performing in the concert. But also to my surprise on opening the programme being the photo ( bottom left ) featured on the page taken by me for the taplow choir. Taken on my Z7ii with 24-70.

14-24 arrived. Just as expected, brilliant.

100-400 and 50 1.2 to come and then I am done for a while!

Been debating if I can justify the 14-24 over the 14-30 for the amount of wide shots I take but still have to buy the workhorse 24-70 Z to replace my F version and really want to try a Z 35mm 1.8 for video & walk around

Really starting to understand the Z9 the more I use it and more comfortable deciding which tracking options to use for the images I'm trying to get. As for the F type lenses, if the Z mount fast telephotos are quicker than the older ones then they must be amazing. My 400mm f/2.8G really does grab hold of moving subjects so quick and I'm so impressed with it. I'll never be able to afford a new Z mount 400mm f/2.8 so I'm hoping the S version if PF form arrives soon and is a stellar performer. I am finding the 500mm PF is a little slow on pick up but still very sharp in use.

The only thing for me on the Z9 tracking is I wish 3d tracking was more sticky. You can have it locked on and then suddenly it will jump to something else for no apparent reason. Other than that it’s spot on.

Z Lens wise I’m hoping that 400pf comes as an f4. The only Z lens I’ve found disappointing is the 105mc, really dislike the bokeh on that lens.

That is interesting to know, I just picked up another 105 F-mount with the intention of upgrading to z-mount when availability and pricing stabilise but might have to rethink now

The Z105 is readily available now. Nikon and parks have them. But I’ve found is a really sharp lens and would be fantastic but the areas out of focus have a very nervous wavy line like quality which personally I don’t like. For now I’ll keep hold of it but it is a real shame because I think it will stop me using it as much as I would otherwise.

Got a cracking and fast little brand new TTArtisans 35mm f/1.4 in Z mount in the Classifieds section now if anyone wants a fast lens for virtually no money. HERE.
Just being a little nosey are you using your voigtlaner 50mm vm on your zfc ? Have you had a chance to look at the zmount offerings from voigtlander iam thinking of getting the apo lanthar 50mm for the zfc possibly.

Adrian, mine is the 35mm f/1.2 vIII, not the 50mm. Yes, it will primarily pair with the Z FC as effectively a 50/1.2. I did look at the Nikon Z mount Voigtlanders but they're not easy to find and there's very little real user info on them yet or image samples. I decided to go with the LTM as I can use it with an adapter on either the Z FC or D700.

Yes sorry the 35mm :-) that does make sense then. I haven`t really found much either on any of the lenses i may take a punt on one of them. Robert White have both the D35 F1.2 Nokton ASPC and the full frame apo 50mm lanthar in stock. But i will probably have changed my mind again in an hour.

Yes, I saw them at Robert White. They're cheaper than the VM. In fact, the VM vIII is twice the price of the Z mount equivalent and that in itself made me pause. Why are they so much cheaper? £550 versus £1100? Something must have been compromised and because there's so little info on them I decided to go with the VM so I at least know what I'm getting. This will be the lens that sits on the Z FC 80% of the time so it needs to be right.

I always end up in that sort of situation myself and it never really works out as you are always wondering what if and end up buying the more expensive lens in the end anyway. Good luck with the lens look forward to seeing some pictures with the ZFC.

Cheers mate. This lens will be a corker with the Z FC. I'm totally convinced. Well, £1k convinced, anyways. :$

I bought these from Amazon. Work perfectly fine in the Z5, no errors and show as NEW battery although I haven't managed to test them long enough to see how long the charge lasts.

Well the Z9 has arrived! I've had it along on a couple of Otter trips, but as I've been guiding people I've not used it on Otters yet. I did point it at a few birds, and it had focused on the eye before I had any time to even think about it:eek:

Off to try some in-flight shots on Puffins this afternoon...

Hi guys, looking to take my Z6 II on holiday with me in a few weeks. I’m therefore looking to get a larger CF express card. I’ve been looking at the Anglebird cards, and I’m a little confused. I’m particularly looking at the 512 GB SE card for £148 + vat (on CVP.com). My first question is would this card work fine with the camera. Secondly it seems Angelbird has smaller capacity cards for even more money which I don’t understand. Is it just that these lower capacity cards are faster or is the one I’m looking at old stock?

I’m only going to be using this on my Nikon Z6 II and Z7 II, according to the specs this card has a sustained right speed of 800 MB per second.

In my view that should be plenty enough for either of the Z’s ? Is that correct?

No need to spend on extra fast CF cards for Z6II so the one you have mentioned is more than enough for your needs And will work with no problem.

Thanks guys

A few photos taken yesterday at a local carnival. Nothing ground breaking, but some of these were meant as comparisons to the Fuji X-T4 I had on loan this weekend so I spent the weekend swapping cameras through the day. And what are your conclusions Pete vs the X-T4 ?

And what are your conclusions Pete vs the X-T4 ?
It's difficult. The reason for trying the X-T4 is that I really struggle carrying so much gear as daily carry. Not when I'm going out intending to take photos, I could carry the Z9 in my hand all day if I'm out shooting, but to have a camera 'just in case'. The obvious option is a DX Z camera but the DX choice for Z isn't great right now. I thought I'd see if the Fuji could replace my Nikon gear. OK so slightly unfair to compare anything to a Z9 but I only have the Z9 as I didn't get on with the Z7ii AF. I have been told the Fujis aren't action cameras, but I don't shoot action or BIF that much, so overshooting in those situations I could handle so thought I'd try it out.

Anyway, I love love love the colours out of the X-T4. I could shoot in jpeg and never worry about raw processing or file sizes again. The prime lenses are sharp as a razor, small, light weight, and metal construction. Just that worry on the rattling I noticed that makes me question long term reliability. But I've never heard of any problems in this regard as a general issue. I like the form factor, solid construction, lenses with aperture controls again. It's a really enjoyable camera to use other than one point. The AF.

It all really came down to the AF. It was odd, it was fast to acquire focus, but I found it really inconsistent at times and quite slow if something was moving to keep track of the movement. The face tracking got very confused with multiple people in the frame but I didn't try portraits this weekend. I have to say, it was a disappointment for that.

That being said, I'm now trying to justify running both systems, an X-T4 plus a couple of primes for daily carry. Or do go for a Zfc and a couple of Viltrox primes... But those colours... Did I mention the colours are simply beautiful? lol
