Nikon Z* mirrorless

Mine arrived yesterday too. It seems another fairly small batch made it into the UK this week.

I'm thinking of getting one of the cheaper z primes - 40mm or 28mm, just to muck about with. I want to try a fixed lens as a walkabout lens, just to challenge myself, plus it'll get used for a few shots of our dog. :p

I'm drawn to the 40mm at the minute. Anyone have these lenses? They seem to review pretty well but thought I'd ask here. The 50mm is too expensive for the use it would get. I do have the FTZ but I'd rather get a Z lens. I could sell the adaptor to fund the lens.

I haven’t used it much but I have the 40mm and it seems good.
From a couple of threads on another site it seems 40mm is slightly sharper than the 28.
It depends which focal length suits you the best.

I’m very happy with my 40mm - and it’s so tiny it’s great to always have either as a miniscule walkaround lens, or in a pocket as a backup!

I paid the £200 as it was worth it to me, i get extra warranty on a camera which is by all accounts needs longer term testing to irn out issues. I get the camera eaier which allows me to sell my current camera before prices start to drop a but more so that £200 extra isnt really any more.
I'm thinking of going down the Panamoz route, they offered me a Z9 last week but I have a UK order in. Thing is this could take 6 months, I'm a long way down the list.

They offered me one last week as well but I literally got the call to say my pre-order had come in at the same time as the email from Panamoz. Only £100 more than the uk price now so I’d go for it if you know you’re a long way down the list.

I might do, its just if anything went wrong with it. Ive ordered off them before, they have a good warranty, its just if anything went wrong with it and Nikon refused to do the work.

Here's a side by side review of the pair

First venture out this weekend with the Z9. Went a track day Saturday test the vehicle tracking and then Sunday for a stroll with my 500mm f/5.6 PF and FTZ2 adaptor checking animal tracking. I was very impressed with the animal tracking, even picking out subjects in the trees between branches so a thumbs up for the Z9 here. The vehicle tracking works really well too and impressed with its speed. So so far so good. F024DB7E-3314-4F2F-8039-52179BD955FA.jpeg

Was out walking the dog this morning and had the Z9 & 70-200 with 1.4x on with me. The photo here is nothing special. It's was under exposed and had to push it 1.25 stops in lightroom, taken at ISO 5000, 280mm @f4, 1/1250s as that's what I had it set.
Very underexposed but my fault as the sky is so bright and I didn't compensate in camera. 3D with animal detect on, and locked on as he started to lift wings to fly. Shot 38 frames panning from him taking off to me stopping. 4 were oof, just 4. Even past this confusing background of trees, while the light was pretty crappy so the bird merged into the trees. This Z9 keeps amazing me.
I need a longer lens though :ROFLMAO:

Uncalled for comment !

It was showing how well the focus would track against that background, relevant to myself regarding autofocus tracking compared to my Z7II etc

Wow, what the hell prompted that outburst ? If you don't like Pete's photo then that's fine (we all have different tastes), but that outburst is completely unwarranted.

This is all too stupid for me. I'm out of here!
Happy to help ..
7 day Thread ban, hopefully you'd have cooled off by then

Anyways, moving on….

I still haven’t managed to pluck up the courage to order a 14-30. I just wish the thing was cheaper, but now I have holidays booked again I do need(/want) a small UWA, which is pretty limiting in choice. Anyone willing to convince me there’s a better option out there for z shooters? I’m trying to reduce down my F lenses, but would be willing to adapt if needed!

If you have a FTZ adapter I find my F Mount lenses work well especially AFS but I’m just as happy going wide with old MF lenses with hyper focal distance or focus peaking why not give it a try first before making another purchase ?

Not sure if the Amazon deal will re-appear. A few of us here got one for 800 quid last year. Its a really nice lens. Sharp and quite compact and light. (I realise I'm not helping very much.! :p )

Ftz and secondhand DSLR lens, as Phil says, is the only option to save money.

Sorry but I love my 14-30 - can't talk you out of one I'm afraid :D
I agree it’s a great lens if you have the funds for it but if money is tight there are other option especially if he has F Mount glass.
i purchased my Z14-30mm last year but only got around to mounting it on the camera on the 19/January this year and shot this

Haha no need to apologise for any previous comments! It was always a long ask that someone was going to remind me of a lens half the price that’s just as good that I’d just forgotten about :ROFLMAO:

I considered going MF again after your post, but having thought about it I’m really not good or patient enough to get decent results, so just stumped up the cash for the 14-30!

Heard today that my Z9 is on it's way! #excited

Well got my Z9 and they said it only the second one they had since December 23rd, so not may coming through at least at smaller stores? Think the USA getting the majority looking at YouTube and Facebook groups

My local WEX ( small store ) is saying mine looks like April/May now and the entire group have had VERY little thus far, I wouldn’t be surprised if this estimate moves further. I am a bit disappointed but nothing I can do and I did wait a bit before ordering min, as it stands I may have no job and may not be able to buy anyway but I live in hope.

Ordered my 24-120 this afternoon. No stock as I expected but at least I’m in the queue for it.
