I'm getting back into DSLR (for the third time...) and I used to have the Nikon 12 - 24mm which I rather liked, so having noticed that these days third party lenses such as Tokina, Tamron etc. are being spoken of in a favourable manner. Which should be on my shortlist?
Cheers, Mick.

Assume we're talking ultra wide here rather than conventional wide angle? The 14-24 is a lovely lens but is big and expensive. If you're using a DX camera, take a look at the Tokina 11-16 2.8, a really nice lens.

The Nikon f2.8 14-24mm is my go-to lens for all things architectural or tight space......beautiful and still doing sterling work after five years virtually daily use.

The old saying....'buy once etc'

You get what you pay for, and don't hanker after something else after a year or two.

For DX wideangle there really is no point in the 14-24mm, if you want wide, stick with a specific DX lens like the Tokina 1116mm

Thanks chaps, a nice shortlist in next to no time! Now to start evaluating...
Cheers, Mick.

For FF or crop?

I have a sigma 10-20mm on my DX D7100 and it's a great wide angle lens, a bit slow at f4-5.6 though it's depends on what you shoot. Have a D750 now and I'm looking for a wide angle lens but the 14-24mm is a bit out of my budget. Samyang 14mm seems the way to go.

I would second the Tamron 15-30mm f2.8.....not taken it out anywhere exciting yet (only had it less than a month) but what I have taken, just messing about, has been very nice!

DX, and I'll probably stick with it tbh.
Tokina gets very favourable reviews, some say the best. There's also the Nikon 12-24mm, or 17-35mm f2.8 if 26mm eq is wide enough.

The tokina 11-16 is solid & built like a tank too. I really liked it.

I have used the Tokina 11-16 f2.8 on my DX set up before. Its aperture is usable in low light, but bit short in reach.

i like my 10-20 sigma, variable apature its light and goes slightly wider, people seem to prefer it to the f3.5 sigma

Thanks folks, the Tokina is looking favourite for my needs! The Nikon is superb but as it won't be use for making my living is probably a bit OTT.

I also have the tokina 11-16mm and it suffers from lens flare if any bright light sources are in the shot. Great lens though and at £279 from HDEW quite a bargain. They also do the newer 11-20mm f2.8 for £349.
