I have a Nikon Z5 with the 24-200 Z lens. I've also got the FTZ adaptor to use wiuththe couple of F mount lenses I hung on to. I'd now like a wider-angle zoom and am trying to decide between saving up for there 14-30 f4 Z lens or getting the AF-S 16-35 f4 G to use with the adaptor - a nearly new example is for sale for just over half of what the 14-30 costs.

Any thoughts or advice gratefully received.

I give you my thoughts on this as a Nikon and budget conscious user :)

For me, it all depends on the application - i.e. what will you be shooting and how do you intend to use this lens? If it's for landscape, I'd go for the 16-35 or the 14-24 2.8 if you don't need filters. I'd only go for the z-mount if af performance was critical in your decision, if it's for portraits or sport then this would be a consideration.

I don't know what the relative performance of these lenses is like, but if all else were equal I wouldn't generally buy new lenses for a system I would then always have to use with an adapter, unless I also wanted to retain compatibility with a film camera or dSLR, or had a very tight budget. You'll probably still be using the lens long after the next body upgrade.

14-30 all day long. The 16-35 is a bit of a dog to be honest. Most short F mount zooms are (I've had the lot and none have had great centre to edge sharpness - even the fabled 14-24). The newer Z mount allows for a lens design that delivers a higher optical performance. Given you are going to have to endure the EVF and all the shortfalls of mirrorless you might as well go with the upside of the superior new lenses.

If it helps you decide, Amazon have the 14-30 on sale at present. I’ve ordered one, due to arrive Sunday. I moved to mirrorless to cut down the weight and size of gear I cart about. Imho, using adaptors just goes against that. My kit will be the Z5, 24-200 and 14-30. Don’t need anything else and nice and light and not too much space needed in the bag.

Who's delivering yours Sunday? Mine is due Wednesday!:confused::ROFLMAO:

@JasonPC Mine is now tracking as "out for delivery" today! :$

Mine landed at my local Amazon hub 0415 this morning. I buy a lot of stuff from Amazon and the driver is usually on his/her way by now so it looks like tomorrow for mine. Hopefully be able to get out and take a few pics with it on Monday!
