Hello, I wonder if someone might be able to help me. I’ve been using the bundled Nikon ViewNX2 software which came with my D5100 for simple PP work ie. cropping and some of the image enhancements etc and on the whole it works well – it’s straight forward and fairly easy to use.
However I can’t for the life of me work out how to use the enlargement facility (the help file isn’t very helpful !)There is a slider bar which allows enlargements to be made in steps of x.5, x1, x2 and x4 but there isn’t any fine adjustments in between the set enlargements – it’s very frustrating as the jumps are either not enough or way too much.
If there’s anyone out there who uses this software and knows how to use this facility I’d be really grateful if you could let me into the secret.
Regards
NN

I strongly suspect you've discovered the reasoning behind free software. Naturally Nikon's paid-for image editor, Capture NX2, offers the facility to specify the exact size you want.

Thanks Stratman I had a idea that was going to be the case but no harm in asking.
Do you play proper barre chords or girlie open chords like me?

Both!!! If you choose your keys correctly you can even play open chords all the way up the neck ;)

Hi Norm,

Big fan of View NX2 here :)

By "enlargement" are you referring to the slider bar at the very top right of the screen? If so, this is just a magnification slider (e.g at 1.0 you are seeing the image on screen at 100% or actual size) but doesn't alter the actual size of the image.

Unfortunately, as far as I can tell, there's no way to choose intermediate levels :(

Hiya Steve
I agree with you, View NX2 is excellent in all respects other than the fact that you can't "blow up" the image and then crop from that enlarged image an area that you want.
Stratman hit the nail on the head - it's free because whilst it's pretty good it isn't as good as Capture which probably has all the bells and whistles but costs an arm and a leg.
I know it sounds daft, but I use PS Elements 7 to enlarge the original image and then use NX2 to crop and enhance colours, contrast and sharpness etc, I find that NX2 has much more fine control over these basic functions. I know it seems like a lot more extra work but it works for me.

Overall, Isn't it because Nikons own software reads NEF files better than Elements,Lightroom etc..I can't afford those other's mentioned and while they may be able to do a 'lot more' I fine View NX2 excellent!

I recently bought an iMac and am beginning to get the hang of iPhoto, but have previously used Nikon's software on my PC, I was missing View NX & Transfer) so I downloaded it & now use Transfer to put my photos onto the iMac & then use iPhoto to edit them.
I am wondering whether to upgrade to Aperture - any suggestions!
