My first encounter with ViewNX, it's driving me mad.

Is there an idiots tutorial to Nikon Transfer and ViewNX?

Dave

i use capture as it automatically makes folders and only copies previously uncopied files. Once the transfer is done ViewNX fires up automatically.

the important bit with view NX (for me) is the 3 tabs on the far left, right click and output a jpeg etc.

batch exposure, processing of simple raw commands are also great . pretty simple program really.

They are not that complex to be honest. Have a play and if you've got any specific questions then we'll try and answer them.

My tip of the day for View NX would be using the shift key to quick zoom to 100% on a full screen preview. Handy for checking overall image sharpness.

Not a very 'user friendly' programme IMHO, I've never had trouble with other editing suites.

What I'm looking for is, is how do I actually get started.

The problem I have is actually isolating a JPEG to edit in the first place.

Can I use any file containing photos or does it have to be the Nikon transfer file?

If I click on a file all the photos contained therein appear in the main body of the programme, how do I isolate one for editing?

Any other editing suite I know one just double clicks on the thumbnail to be edited and bingo there it is.

Be patient with me lads, we'll get there in the end :D

No worries. I think you've been misled into thinking ViewNX is an editing tool. It's a picture viewer/sorter only really, with the ability to do a basic conversion from NEF raw file into JPEG (right click and image, convert...). You can also change white balance and a few other settings. For editing a jpeg though, I can't think of anything it will do for you.

Nikon's editing package is called Capture NX. It's not free, although you can use it in trial mode for a time period (30 or 60 days IIRC). If you thought the interface of View was nasty, you'll probably detest Capture :gag:. It's not the most user friendly bit of software, but it's output is top quality. It can also do things in seconds that would take a lot longer in Photoshop.

Do a search for Nx capture on Utube there are a few good tutorials on there, some are in japanese but a few are in english.

Very many thanks Steve, I understand now.

Perhaps this should have been made clear in the blurb.
