Nikon today has unveiled its widest aperture DX-series lens to date, the AF-S DX Nikkor 35mm f/1.8G. With a field of view equivalent to about a 52mm lens on a 35mm sensor size camera, the new Nikon optic combines a fast f/1.8 maximum aperture, one aspherical element, Silent Wave focusing and a nine blade diaphragm for natural-looking out of focus areas.

I am not quite sure what to make of this. I've been waiting for Nikon to update a few other lenses, 80-400VR, 85/1.4 & 85/1.8, even the 200/4 ... then after a short silence they throw this at us

How difficult was it to design and manufacture this one, was it so high in their sale's priority?

I just hope that this is a first in a series of updates that we will see; mind, this is a DX lens, so it is not really an updated 35/2!

35mm f/1.8 with AF-S. And only DX?! Blimey.

Going for the Sigma 30mm f/1.4 space I guess, albeit 2/3rd of a stop slower.

Interesting - nowt wrong with the 35/2 AF-D though, although price wise this is similar.

Quite tempted to try one for my D40 - especially as prices for the Sigma 30mm f//1.4 have gone mental!

Seeing how the 35/2 is small and tiny and is FF, this is a real surprise!

You've got to wonder what Nikon think they're doing. In the last year they've revolutionised the market for full-frame ..... so why on earth was THIS the top of their development priorities?

I mean, given that Nikon only have the resources to introduce about 3 new lenses per year, who would have considered this to be anywhere on their must-do list, let alone at the top?

:shrug::cuckoo:

I think this is actually a good move. I'd rather it was FX, but I probably wouldn't buy it anyway (already have 35mm f/2 AF-D.)

A lot of people were recommending against the entry level DX bodies because there was no fast normal prime for them. Now there is. Then again, there's still no AF on second hand lenses, no metering on manual lenses, etc.

Gotta agree with that Stewart, why another DX lens........

I think Sigma will probably fill the FF market before Nikon now.

I'd like to see a 35/1.4L competitor, but I have a feeling Sigma may fill the FF need, not Nikon (and if its as good as their 50mm f/1.4 its no bad thing)

I might pick one of these up as a stop gap until I go FF (in a few years time!). It's pretty cheap and cheerful I suppose. This and a 50mm f1.4 would be good on my D300 for indoor/low light photography.

Well ironically I'll probably get one as well.

I sold my (superb) 35/2 as I tend to prefer a Sigma 30mm on DX, but given the silly 30mm pricing now, this 35/f.1.8 DX might actually find a place in my bag.

From the original article, this is supposed to be around $200, which probably comes to about £150 , not a bad price for a fast lens. Though, I have no idea what the image quality will be like.

Seems that Sigma have managed to outdo Nikon on at least one other lens (AF-S 50/1.4) .... would be interesting to see a comparison of this against the Sigma (though they are slightly different).

That said ....

Well ironically I'll probably get one as well.

....

This is why I think you work for Canon :p

... I sold my (superb) 35/2 .......

If I may say, I love it. Simply just love it. Can't stress how much I love it.

Light; sharp; wonderful image quality; fast; and not too wide, not too "normal". Just wonderful. Thank you for selling it :)

The 35/2 is superb, I don't use it enough on full frame to justify.

I dis-like 50mm on DX, but love 30 or 35/2.

I find 35mm a bit "odd" on FF, and prefer 50mm there, so actually a DX only lens would make sense for me (I think...).

If you like the 35mm, try the 28mm f/2.8 AI-S :)

I wonder how long this is going to take to arrive in the shops.

I want to give that AI-S a try, and have tried to search for one. It's just that I've been doing a bit of travelling that I haven't gotten down to sourcing a 2nd-hand one.

If push comes to I may just dish out the new asking price, but that would be at the risk of postponing a Zeiss 100/2 Macro Planer which I badly want to give a go with.

As for the 35/2, it was the only prime lens I used this past weekend where I stayed in a lighthouse and had wonderful seafront views all throughout my stay. The lens was a beauty, and just in time, as it's all I used indoors and outdoors (bar the 70-300VR).

Back to this DX lens, funny at it seems but I never liked 50mm viewing angle. It was just not right. That's one of the reasons I love the Voigt. 58, that little bit extra somehow makes it for me; and the 35/2 also seems to fit just nicely; but then we all have different tastes.

I'm still puzzled, though, as to why Nikon saw it necessary to introduce this lens.

I have a feeling this is aimed at the D40/D60 end of the market which has needed an AF-S response to the Sigma 30mm for a while. People with those cameras aren't likely to be going full frame any time soon so a decent DX lens would be an investment.

That may be so, but may I say the D40 (and the rest in that range) should not be trivialised.

I've got some of my best shots with a D40, and with the very poorly rated 70-300 AF G lens; and I see this as being fine for all DX bodies.

My surprise is that Nikon has an urgent need to update a number of other lenses, which the Canon users have been enjoying for a long while. I am just surprised they've introduced this. Putting their brains and money behind this lens, instead of something a bit more urgent.

Of course, urgent is all relative .. and I am guessing that Nikon believe that they can sell enough quantities of this AF-S making good margins to offset what profit they would have made on the other lenses that I believe they should have introduced.

I no longer shoot DX, but will be buying a D300 or D200 soon for stuff that the DX is just superb at (that little bit of cropped reach). So, I can see why Nikon want to have this "normal" prime, but not at the expense of other lenses.

I'm really keen on a very good 35mm for FX. The 35/2 is ok but not spectacular IMHO - a bit ropy wide open and prone to CA.

I'd happily pay £500 for a good 35/1.4

Sorry, but what is ropy?

For £500, have a look at the 28/2.8 AI-S.

Ropey = not really great until f2.8

I don't want MF lenses. And I want a 35mm, not a 28.

, thanks.

:) It's OK, but thank you .. in all respects, mine was too :P

I found myself going to DX again, I missed my D60 loads :'(

Ideally I want the D700's sensor in a D40 class body for pottering around.

Until that happens - I picked D40 which cost me almost nothing which is quite fun.

So I'm tempted by the lens, especially as prices for the Sigma 30mm have gone mental!

Nikon announced a cheap and fast DX lens! Unfortunately we'll have to wait till March untill it will be available. The lens: f/1.8 and 35mm focus lenght. More good news: price will be only $200! UPDATE: In pounds this is £135,16 ... lol

Article: http://www.gadgeez.com/?p=574

Sweet. This will be ~50mm when fitted on to a DX camera, which sounds exactly ideal. Let's hope the $200 translates to £100-£120 or so... (lol)

Hi

Welcome!

I'm going to get this, price will be closer to £200 though, perhaps £180 street.

I plan to get one.

oh awesome, ive still only got the kit lens for my D80 and wanted to buy the 50mm 1.8 recently but its been sold out everywhere. This looks even better, if a bit pricier.

Would this or the 50mm be better for street? (i dont like using a telephoto for street)

I dislike 50mm on DX personally.

I think I'd be looking at 28mm or 35mm for street.

Set your kit lens to 35 and 50mm (if you have one) and see which focal length you prefer.

Look at the pictures of William Klein. This is a street-photographer. He uses an analog camera with wideangle or 50mm. For streetphotography 50mm is the maximum. So for the DX you can't go higher than a 35mm.

This looks like a really good addition to the range and it is also AFS so would work with my wifes D40x and daughters D60 too. Think I will have to buy one!

I've always wondered why these didn't become common as much with the digital revolution, here's hoping the other lens makers follow suit so we get a nice price war. Personally as a canon user I'd be perfectly happy with a 30mm f1.8 lens made to exactly the same standards as the current nifty fifty if that made it available for a sensible price.

And bundled as THE kit lens for all new DSLR camera kits....

I've always wanted a compact lens with AF to couple with my D40 for a nice walkabout setup. Hopefully this will fit the bill. I would have preferred a wider angle though, something like 28mm to give a cropped image equivalent to 42mm.

Very nice, I was actually just considering when Nikon would release a cropped sensor 50mm equivalent AF-S lens the other day. Guess I gotta start saving the pennies!

Thanks Joe :)

This is available to order from Misuds and Warehouse Express. £199 from both so not discounted. I reckon it'll be a little cheaper once stock arrives with some competetion, but I think this will see a lot of demand.

I love this focal length on DX so this is a great "3rd way" for those of us of who vacillate between the Nikkor 35/2 and Sigma 30mm f/1.4 :)

Thanks Joe.

This lens has cause quite a stir, i see someone else has started another thread after me:bonk:(you've allready closed it, so don't go looking for it)

I just hope it's worth waiting for.
