Nikon UK repair time

For repairs completed this year:
  • Canon - 53 repairs, average time 10.5 days including postage both ways
  • Nikon - 41 repairs, average time 28.9 days including postage both ways
I've just been advised that Nikon have FINALLY repaired the 500mm f/4 VR which they've had since July. If I get it back tomorrow, it will have been a 78-day turnaround. Imagine how much it's cost me to have that out of service for so long. And when I add it to the stats, Nikon's average will go to over 30 days. Great.

No wonder the service manager doesn't want to speak to you, how on earth can you defend a 78 day turnaround on a modern lens which they should be keeping ample spares for!!

I wonder why so long. I know Nikon at Kingston have issues sometime but thats just unacceptable. Just for comparison the twice I've sent stuff to Kingston for repairs they've turned around within two days. On one of the occasions they did then return my stuff via city link who lost it.

I dropped my D750 in to the Kingston service centre as I live locally last Friday (2nd) and am yet to hear anything back - status still shows as awaiting estimate by technician.

Phoned this morning to see what is going on. Apparently they have had "a large influx of cameras" so they have a backlog - they cannot guarantee when they will get to my camera, but should be within the next few days o_O

My camera was from Panamoz, so this delay is only for the estimate of work required. I suppose there will be a similar delay in actually getting the thing fixed too

I sent mine off on Friday received an email from them today advising "Approximate repair completion date: 15 October 2015. This is subject to the availability of spare parts and the extent of the work required."

Let's see how true this is..

Mine is STILL awaiting parts...
My status hasn't changed either. Borrowing a camera off a friend for tonights photography class.

Did you see my post regarding screen costing?

Sorry - missed that! Mine is now paid for £20 more than the original estimate and should be back with me Thursday I guess. Took bloomin long enough...

Mine looks like its going to be around 6 day turn around.

Finally received mine back - seems as good as new - need to find time to go out and test it now. It was such a good camera before I'm hopeful it'll perform as it did.

Well done. Mine has just sat there since it came back. Time, time, time....

Fixation does a very good job and their turnaround time is very good.Great communication .From personal experience of using it last year.

Managed a quick outing at Bodnant Gardens and then some evening shots of LLandudno today - looking forward to seeing how they look after months with a D7100 :)

I've not had any repairs done, but I posted my d90 on Saturday, got an acknowledgement on Wednesday and a quote by Friday (lateish).
Is that about normal?
Sadly the repair didn't make financial sense...

For example this year we had nearly half of our entire stock of the Nikon 80-400mm VR lenses out for repair at one stage, which is quite poor given how new they are, and that has biassed the figures.
Interesting: if I was to swap to Nikon, that would be one of the lenses on my list!
Unfortunately I think the Nikon AF-S 80-400 VR is one of the least reliable types of lens we have ever had. Most of the problems are with the zoom mechanism, which simply doesn't seem to be strong enough to cope with moving all that glass around. It feels quite flimsy in this area compared to the Canon 100-400 Mk II, for example. It doesn't bode well for the new Nikon 200-500, but obviously we don't have any data yet.

I've just received back a Nikon 80-400 VR (zoom failure, inevitably) and a Nikon 85/1.4G (minor impact damage) which have been at Nikon for 33 days and 66 days respectively. That won't do the average any good. I also received back 3 items from Canon, which had each been out for 10 days (including postage both ways, and a weekend). So my updated averages this year are:
  • Canon - 57 repairs, average time 10.5 days including postage both ways
  • Nikon - 45 repairs, average time 30.9 days including postage both ways

Would be interesting to get Nikon's thoughts on the difference!

Here's an amusing update. On Friday we sent some lenses to Canon and some to Nikon. Yesterday (Tuesday) I received acknowledgement from Nikon that they had received the lenses. However, an hour earlier I had received notification from Canon that two of the lenses had been inspected, repaired, and sent back us.
