Hi all

I am seriously considering making the switch from Nikon to Canon.

I'm after some advice on whether you think this swap would benefit me...

Here is my current setup:
Nikon D7000 + Nikon Battery Grip
Nikon 70-209 f2.8 VRI VC
Nikon 17-55 f2.8 VC

Here is what I've looked at:
Canon 7D
Canon 70-200 f2.8 IS
Then either a 50mm prime or 24-70 2.8 depending on budget...

Mpb have offered me £1170 for all my Nikon kit...

Should I...shouldn't I...

I don't really think the 7d will give you any noticeable improvement over the D7000 (I have 2 btw)
WHy are you thinking of swapping? what do you hope to gain?

Why?

What are you gaining by switching, I can't see anything standing out to make the switch?.......... Could possibly see going to 7D2 or FF if theres a good deal to be done, otherwise stick with Nikon and upgrade what you've got.

Not sure thats a real upgrade. Sell the D7000 with 17-55 and buy yourself a D610 from the classifields.... (shameless plug!) or used D700.

Pick up a nifty 50 f1.8g or Tamron 28-75

As you said, it's a switch, but I can't see any benefits to be had unless you swap for the 7DII.

Thats a very real downgrade especially when you consider how poor canons latest sensor tech is let alone their sensors from 6 years ago.

Right well I think that's my decision made. Thanks for all the quick input.

I'll look into upgrading the Nikon body, sell the 17-55 to help towards the upgrade.

Thanks again

Phil

don't do it, i pondered going the other way after investing in canon kit because their focusing was so bad, but they eventually fixed it. Choose 1 flavour - invest in good glass, and buy a better body when you can afford it / a same flavour body is released that does what you want it to. The top brands always seem to catch-up with each other on important functionalities

I'm here a bit late, but I've owned the 7D and the noise did my head in - also I've gone a bot of the long way round but I went Canon > Olympus > Nikon and the D750 is a really strong camera, easily on par with the 5DIII I used to have, which is really saying something.

I quite fancy the D610 after I sell the D7K and the 17-55.
17-55 is great but it gets no use compared to the 70-200 I have. Plus if I shoot with the 17-55 I'm always at the 50mm end.

Don't do it. I tried it a while back, going from D90 to 5d mk1, couldn't get used to it and sold it after a week..

I would look to trade your D7000 for a D7100 / D7200.
But if you want to go FF trade the body and 17-55mm for a D750/ D610 or a s/h D700 :)
I haven't got a D750 but you can't help but be impressed with the high iso in low light a friend of mine has one and I'm really impressed with it. And there are plenty of s/h 50mm Hdew sell new 1.8 D at £75 new ! Less than s/h prices:)
But that only a decision you can make !

I think about it now and again but usually one from the lens line up aspect

I think I'm going to a 7d Mark ii. I'm always going to want to switch so I may aswell, no harm in going back the other way if I don't get on.

Friends are all on canon and I was told originally to go with canon so I have the option of borrowing glass from them.

D750, what i cant understand is how far Canon are behind the curve, the 7Dii doesn't have Wifi, FFS its 2015 not 1990... i think your making a mistake, if you sit in the canon forums on DPreview, there all leaving like rats from a sinking ship to Sony.

But i can see your angle if your mates use them then maybe for you it warrants the move, i wouldn't though...don't forget your wifi cards :)

Hi Phil.
If its something you want to do then go for it.
For the last 10-15 years I've been buying canons semi-pro bodies (X0D/XD) and mainly L glass.
Last month I purchased a second hand d300s and a new Tamron 24-70 f2.8 VR. Image quality was better. More in focus shots. Better skin tones that are much faster & easily achievable in lightroom.
I was able to program controls for the way I like to shoot.
I was convinced.
I then committed & moved to Nikons range of semi pro/pro bodies and equivalent glass.
The main instigator of change was reliability, which remains to be seen.

Keep in mind that when you borrow others lenses that they will not be calibrated to your body. You may have the opportunity to do a limited range of in camera adjustments. It may be enough.

If I was you I wouldn't make the change.
If I had the opportunity to try out friends lenses, I'd see if they could be persuaded to also give me their cameras for the day. Go out and take a few hundred shots with the canon and repeat with the nikon of the sorts of things you like to shoot.
Then compare things like skin tones and how many shots are in focus from each camera system.

Seems like a good suggestion or possibly hire one if they're unable to part with it. It seems like a lot of effort swapping over for little justification.

If your going to canon go FF! 7d is good but IMO not 5d mk2 good

As you have already bought a 7d2 and in the process of selling your nikon gear there is no point saying otherwise. I do hope the change is a good one. I can understand having access to your friends gear is helpful (most of my friends use nikon so it's good to test bits when you need to or borrowing something whilst out with them). I think the whole canon-nikon-sony-fuji thing is just marketing hype, it's all swings and roundabouts as it changes each year. Canon are very good at getting pro photographers on board to 'market' their new cameras and lenses, just think how many 7d2's and 100-400 lenses Andy Rouse has helped sell.

Easy...Nikon D750. Been said before me in this thread and they're all right!
I also think Nikon have been much more progressive in their thinking with respect to lens refreshing. Canon haven't done this anywhere nearly as much. I used to have a Canon 17-40 f4L and it was nowhere as good as some liked to think it was on a DX body (7D).

From a personal perspective I've found it easier to get an image to look like it does in my minds eye with Nikon equipment rather than Canon. This is just my experience and I'm sure that some have found the reverse.

Except that nobody has the foggiest idea *why* the OP wants to switch. How can anyone say that the D750 (or any other camera) is the answer, when we don't even know what the question is?

Think the OP has most of his pals on Canon so a good reason..

Also sometimes just a change is what is needed to kick start enthusiasm, not the best reason I know but I reason nonetheless. I have done it many a time, I enjoy it swapping and changing, I probably know the ins and outs of every system now.

Would have been better off finding some new Nikon pals.

I thought the D750 was the answer to everything?? :coat:

As I read the first post I got from it what would the benefits of switching to Canon be to determine if there was good reason to jump brands. I was trying to suggest that switching systems might not necessarily be the answer and all he might need is a new FF body.

Fair point though...it's been D610 then 7d mk2 later in the thread. Hope his friends don't switch later.
