Hello all.
Well today i have had a big shock, went out with my young cousin to do some landscapes.

I was using my D40x and he brought his 450D and i really enjoyed using his 450D so much i am thinking about swapping.

I just loved the ergonomics of the camera as soon as i picked it up it felt better than my Nikon fitted in my hands better just felt so comfortable.

Time after time i have seen advice on here saying go try the camera before you buy now i know why you say that, so as i said i am thinking of selling my Nikon gear and getting a 450D.

I just wanted to hear from 450D owners past or present what are the good and bad points of this camera? I would think it would be at least as good as my D40x if not better.

Have you looked at any higher level nikons? You might find something like a D80 would also work great for you.

I personally don't get along well with either canon or nikon's entry level cameras, there is definitely a big difference moving to a higher grade body for both brands.
 
For my first camera, I chose Nikon over the Canon cos the D40 felt much better in my hands than the 450D. However I upgraded to a Canon as I was really happy with the 50D when compared to the D90. If you are not heavily invested in one, the other is worth shot. Having said that, I would not go from a D40x to anything less than a 550/600D.

One thing I must admit is that the color rendition on my Nikon was much better than that of my Canon...
 
As above, don't get a 450D if you really want to swap over. 500/550Ds can be picked up super cheap now.
 
A 450D was my first venture into DSLR world in 2008, and I haven't regretted it, but then again, I haven't used any others, apart from playing with a mate's 300D, and the 450D is a world apart from that one.

I find it easy to use and have gone through a couple of lens upgrades since I had it, and am very pleased with the results.
 
Hi Paul

A good friend has recently upgraded from a 450D to a 60D. The reason - he wanted more fps than the 450D could offer him - he's getting back into motorsport. He loved his 450D, got very nice shots from it and I don't think he'd have upgraded if he hadn't wanted the extra fps.

Yes the 60D also does a heap of things his 450D didn't, which he also likes - the swivel screen is not something he was bothered about, but he's really liking it. He also now has the option for video - not sure if he's tried it yet.

I suppose budget will be the deciding factor for you, have a look at the newer xxxD bodies and make sure there isn't something they do that you'd like.

My first dslr was the 550D, I hadn't had chance to go in and try at a shop but with the measurements of my hands and the camera it seemed as though it would be ok. When I finally got to hold my 550D is was like putting a glove on it. The ergonomics were fantastic, buttons where my fingers wanted them and great weight and size. If you like the feel of the 450D then the 550D or 600D would be great for you.

Where abouts in the country are you from, if you're anywhere near Lincoln why dont you arrange to come over and have a try with my cameras. I've got a 550D, a 7D and a 5DMkII and I'm about most days.

I can't answer your question on the 450D but i enjoy very much the Canon 60D vs Nikon IMO, you could try the 550D or 600D they are nice cameras to have a look at;).

ive used a handful of both..started with a 350D, then went to a 30D now to a 1D..i think some of the cheaper xxxD canons can feel abit cheap/plasticy but still good camera's...30D was much better built and felt alot more sold...and well my 1D is a tank..no way plastic atal lol!

Are we still using the word cheap/plasticy on the xxxD canons i thought that was solved in other camera forums never seen it for a long time i like to know were is the cheap/plastic cameras you are talking about!;)

And Yes the 1D is like a tank in fact it's like holding a brick:lol: not camera
 
Just going on personal experience from my 350D and having a 400D very briefly too..I just didn't think the felt particularly solid!

Whilst they don't feel that solid, they're made very well. I dropped my 400D several times and not once did it crack or break.
 
If it suits you better and you don't have a huge amount of Nikon gear then make the change. Perhaps you can spend more time with the 450D to make sure that you really prefer it? Also might be worth visiting your local camera emporium to try out the latest cameras from each make to see if the updated Nikon's feel better?
 
I have the 450d and only have a couple of complaints

(1) Its not that great at low light, even with a f1.4 lens, the fps and and iso can still be a bit grainy ... but then I compare this to a mates full frame camera which is remarkable in no light

(2) Fast lenses are more expensive on the Cannon thatn Nikon ... the Nikon has a great 35mm 1.8 lens for a good price

the nearest you can get to that price on the canon is the 50mm ... but that can be too long for indoor use and the shorter lenses cost an arm and a leg
 
Another thought have you considered a secondhand 5D a great camera for around the £550-650 price great for landscape work full frame and a easy menu to boot. There are a couple in the small adds at the moment ones mine

Hardly. The Canon 50mm f/1.8 can be had cheaper/same price than/as either the Nikon 50mm or 35mm f/1.8 and works on cheaper Canons, unlike the Nikon variant of the 50mm, which you have to shell out more money for to get it in a mount fully compatible with their budget cameras. The 50mm f/1.4 is pretty much the same price for either brand, as is the 85mm f/1.8. The Canon 35mm f/2, granted, is a bit rarer and a bit more expensive but Canon generally has a better fast prime lineup compared to Nikon, including f/1.2 L series lenses too.
 
But the Canon nifty falls apart as soon as you look at it funny - the Nikon is much better built.

I'm not going to bother trying to sway you one way or the other but if you do change at LEAST go for a newer generation of camera, anything else would be pointless.

Except for improved handling if the OP has found that canon suits him better, which is exactly what everyone tells people to prioritise when looking for a camera.

The OP could change the D40 and lenses for a 450D and a couple of canon lenses without loosing too much cash, surely if he can afford to spend more to upgrade his system at the same time then that cash would most likely be better spent on lenses? If the performance of a D40 has proved satisfactory to the OP then the 450D wouldn't disappoint.

As squishy was saying I think that there is a difference and 'feel' to entry level and higher grade cameras. I have used a D40 and other cheaper Nikons before and I would also highly recommend a Nikon D80, as I picked up mine for only £210 2nd hand and with 30,000 actuations its still going strong and I am very happy with it. Fantastic quality a top screen, and I believe (correct me if im wrong) these were around £560 ish when new, and are still going for around £200-250 I think so now is the time to get one :lol:. It has been a very good all round DSLR for me as I shoot raw mostly through the use of the many manual options and this seems to produce a good result and with the addition of a relatively large screen its just right :love:

I have tried the 450D again and still like it, but also tried a friends D90 and his workmates D200 and D7000 and i like those a lot.

So i have decided to stay with Nikon as i know there are models available that feel as good to me if not better than the 450D that made me think about changing.

Did you handle any of the upgraded models of Canon or just the 450D?
It might be an option to get hold of someones 40/50/60D before you invest any more cash in your Nikon set up.

Be sure that you are using the right brand that feels right to you, including when you move up the "food chain" to higher level cameras

Correct answer lol ;), yeah my next camera would probably be a D90 because of the D80 that I use. Just out of interest as well what lens are you using, as I shoot quite a few landscape/nature photos with my Nikon 55-200mm and have pretty good results from this, just trying to find out what most people use :)

Yes MJ. I went into a store a tried them also, came to the decision that i prefer the Cannon entry level cameras to Nikon entry level Cameras, and the opposite applies when i tried the higher level Cameras( but there was not much in it)so i will be quite happy going up the Nikon ladder:)

And J_CAM. I have the 55-200vr also very nice lens IMO, was going to order a 35mm 1.8 but am also interested the 50mm 1.8G that came out not long ago.

Anyway those sensitive Canon types would never have forgiven you for suggestin a Cannon.

You did the right thing and went and tried them all. As long as people do that they can't go far wrong whatever they buy.

Still made the wrong choice though :lol::lol:, but I do agree with this, you need to try them out for yourself and see what you want to do.
