I rarely use long lenses and don't want to suffer the expense or extra bulk of buying a longer lens so thought I would extend the reach of my Nikon 70-200mm f2.8 G AF-S VR with a teleconverter. On Nikon's website the description of the AF-S Teleconverter TC-17E II says that it "Supports the innovative Nikon VR function", whereas the description of the AF-S Teleconverter TC-20E II makes no reference to VR support... So does anyone know if the 2.0 supports the VR?

Also, any recommendations as to which one to go for? Any opinions as to whether the extra length of the 20 is a worthwhile trade off against the lost half a stop when compared to the 17?

Thanks,
Flashy

Thanks! Old Flashy is now veering strongly towards the 1.7x... bit faster and better IQ, sounds like the one to go for and makes the VR question irrelevant.

Eh up Falshy, I have the 1.4 which you could have a look at when I pop round.

The 1.4 gives me a 280mm f:2.8 on my 200mm f:2, but this would drop to f3.5 (I think) on a 70-200 f:2.8. I also have plans to go for a 2x TC to give me a 400 f:4.

My understanding is that although TC's do reduce IQ, if you use good quality TC's you're still better off than you would be if you cropped the image to achieve the same result. The advantage of cropping the image comes in still getting the shallow depth of field you can only achieve with large apertures.

I think you've got that slightly wrong there...

A 1.4x TC loses you one stop. So 200mm f/2 becomes 280mm f/2.8 (correct) but 70-200mm f/2.8 becomes 100-280mm f/4, not f/3.5.

A 2.0x TC loses you two stops, so 70-200mm f/2.8 becomes 140-400mm f/5.6.

A 1.7x TC loses you one and a half stops, so 70-200mm f/2.8 becomes 120-340mm f/4.8-ish.

The 1.7xTC is the only Nikon TC that retains VR. I use it on my 70-200 f2.8 VR and I love it. Buy one!

i should have a TC 1.7 on the way later this week to go with my 300f4 which should give me 510 f6.8 ish

Hi

I have the 1.7 which I use on my Nikon 70-200 VR lens and my 200-400 VR lens. When I was buying my 200-400 I got advice from a professional wildlife photographer who I know and he recommended that the 1.4 converter was a better bet. I already had the 1.7. Obviously it is not as long as the 1.7 or the 2.0. I am seriously thinking of going for the 1.4 but I am no expert

AFAIK all 3 do.

The 1.4 and 1.7 definately do as I have used them, the 2.0 I have no experience of but am pretty sure they do.

I use my 1.4 with my 200mm f:2 and the VR works fine.

I think the confusion may lie in the fact that the Nikon website states that the 1.7 supports VR but doesn't make the same statement for either the 1.4 or the 2.0

I hope you can send it back or that you are happy with just using manual focus as the 300mm f:4's compatibilty with Nikon telecons is limited:

TC-20E/20E II - Usable, but autofocusing is not possible.

TC-17E I - Usable, but autofocusing is not possible.

TC-14E/14E II - Usable.

From the Nikon website

The problem is that AF finds it very hard going when telecons are used with anything slower than f:2.8

I have one on order for use with my 300 F4 and ,yes, I am happy to manually focus with it. I got it primarily to use with my 70-200 which it is fully compatible with.l simply cannot afford a 500mm lens, so this is the compromise i`ve had to make, hopefully i`ll be pleased with the results.

In fact the 1.7 TC has just turned up.

It is a TC-1.7EII and my afs 300 is listed as one of the compatable lenses ;)

I can state that the info is wrong mate.

D200 + 1.7TC + Nikon 300 F4, autofocus does work.....

Also it is 500mm at F6.7.

I thought with the 1.7x you only lose one stop, that is what is so good about it?

mine arrived today and as Fracster says it does autofocus

I am interested to see that you guys get autofocus with the 1.7. Acconding to the nikon website I noticed that I wouldn't get autofocus with my 200-400 F4 VR but when I tried it with that lens it worked fine, at least so far it does.

Is the Nikon website still quoting for the Mark I version then and not the Mark II which apeears to be out now?

Could well be mate.
