I currently own a Nikon 1.4 T/C and use it on my 300 f/4,my question is, if I were to buy a 2x T/c,can they be stacked together?

Yes but it would need modification LINK also some useful info on TC's in general.

I would not even consider it, I fear your image quality will suffer.

I have the 300f4 AF-S and the 1.7TC works well on it (510mm f6.7 still AF's fine), couple of images using that combo

Hello everyone, my first post, hope to gain from the experiences here. Sorry to hi-jack the thread but am also looking at teleconvertors for my 300 f4 afs. Apart from Martyn does anyone else use a 1.7 and can comment on their image quality.

I use one a lot and as long as you're using a nice sharp lens on the camera the quality doesn't suffer that much, it goes get worse though the further away the subject is (same for all converters really)
 
I use one on a 300mm 2.8 and had some cracking aircraft shots with it.
