Hi ,hope someone can help,I'm thinking of getting a tele converter for my nikkor af-s70-300 vr on a D7000'ive tried to get my head round it on google but seems to be a lot of conflicting advice.
Any pointers in the right direction will be a great help.

I don't think you can use a TC with the 70-300 as the rear element is to close to the back of the lens. At certain zoom settings the rear element of the lens will touch the TC element.

The Kenko Pro will fit/work, but it's a waste of time unless you're using it in bright sunlight and the viewfinder image is seriously dark.

I looked into it as I have a 70-300 vr and you can't use a TC. Hence why I'm seriously considering selling and putting it towards a 70-200mm VRll

:plusone:

The Kenko Pro will work on a sunny day but don't expect too much from one on a mid-range, variable aperture lens.

The Nikon TCs will not mount.

Cheers everyone,it looks like that's a wash out then.I'm thinking of getting rid of the 70-300 and maybe go for the 70-200.I assume that a tc will work with that?.

The Nikon TCs work with the 70-200 -- and the cheaper 300/4 ;-)

The best quality will be with the 1.4x

Actually both the Nikon TC-14E II and the new TC-20E III work extremely well with both the Nikon 70-200 F2.8 VR II and the 300mm F4 AFS.

I used the 2x converter yesterday on the 70-200 (making an effective 140-400 F5.6) to shoot fast jets at an RAF base and the combo worked delightfully.

By all accounts that new TC-20E III is supposed to be the dogs dangly bits

I use the converter 1.7 om 70-200 f2.8. I read info, before obtaining the long lens, that the nikon converters were designed only for the 70-200 and the 300. They will not work on any other long lens. The elements come into contact --you have been warned!!!

 Was wondering why all the dogs kept coming over an sniffing it - thanks for clearing that up

i wouldnt use the 1.7 on the 300mm f4 either i have and whatever anyone one says its not designed for it even i can see the results arent good and now only use the the 1.4 on the 300mm.

Nikons site is quite clear the TC x 2 is for F2.8 and faster thats why its so superb on the 70-200mm f2.8 II both modern AFS systems designed for each other.]
its also superb on other F2.8 lens which i dont own so cant comment on.

summary

70-200mm f2.8 tc1.4,tc1.7 and new tcx2

300mm f4 and any lens slower than F2.8 tc1.4 only

with glass like this you cant have something for nothing
