managed to bag one of these 2x converters for £40 delivered on ebay to use with my 80-400mm VR, i know its manual focus, is it manual metering too? and i was going to make sure i used it in good light and on a tripod or (at least) a monopod, but are there any other tricks to using this bit of ancient kit?

The only tip is to put it on Ebay :)

You could have got a Kenko 2x for just a bit more that would AF (in good light) and meter in matrix. You may be get some metering on the D300 not sure...
