I was appaled to read that Nikon are sponsoring multiple predator derbies run by Sportsmen for Fish and Wildlife (a Non-profit org.) in Idaho. The organisation supports the Idaho Governor Butch Otter and the Idaho Department of Fish and Game (IDFG). The IDFG recently voted to extend the wolf-hunting season until next March which brings wolves into the contest, as well as trying to keep wolves of the endangered species list.
A predator derby is a competition lasting 24 hours in which hunters are awarded points for animals that they kill, with different animals worth more or less points. High-powered rifles are used and any means of drawing the animals closer such as electronic calls or scents to match food scents or to suggest a mate is nearby are allowed. There are no permits and no government oversight. Whoever shoots the most animals is the winner.
The points system is as follows:
Bobcats: 2 points
Foxes: 2 points
Coyotes: 2 points
Wolves: 3 points
In the event of a tie in the number of animals, the winner will be determined by the weight of his kills.
All money from the event is going to an organisation known as Idaho Sportsmen Wolf litigation movement, which is against the reintroduction of wolves.
I am appaled that Nikon are sponsoring this and fell that the rest or you on here porbably feel the same. Although I am against hunting, I accept that it is a sport and is usally done in a controlled manner, but this is just a killing spree of predators. When the counting has been finished, the carcasses are thrown away which shows that the animal's life has been completely wasted.
What does everyone think?
